  • I had the idea to try playing Giant Steps in 13/8. It's pretty fun and challenging to solo over. Just ignore the bad notes. Lol

That's cause instead of a 13/8 clave, he divide them, so it sounds like a fast 7/4 groove feel ( count to 6 evenly and the 7 short).
Basically it feels like a normal groove.
But it sounds awesome and really difficult to play as well!!

The guy who was leading the band told me, "Great solo." I love odd time signatures for how versatile they are, how groovy and expressive you can make them feel, and I feel like here, you made 13/8 be the absolute grooviest it can be. The groove is off the charts. Every time I relisten to this, I am at a loss for words, and I'm absolutely ecstatic by the mesmarising grooooooove in this performance.

Or 9000 BC. This is how advanced music used to be in Atlantis. No scales or keys existed, all players began playing chromatically straight from the beginning. The instruments were tuned to A=391.5 by ear (every town had a master tuner) because this was dividable by the Schumann frequency (Earth's resonant frequency) and the resulting number would be 50. Why 50 in particular was deemed important, I don't know, but they were pretty damn good musicians.

In case anyone's trying to break down the rhythms, it goes into 1/16 syncopations, either for anticipating or for stretching duplets across 3 beats.
    (In 8ths) first groove: 0:31
    2+2+2+2+2(comes in 1/16 earlier) + 3* (split into two dotted 1/8s aka a duplet)
You can also see this first part as
    4 + 4 + (2 + 3*) where the 2 is anticipated.
    -
Then there's the part with the attacks, I call it the turnaround.
The rhythm for the turnaround is ...
    (In 8ths) from 0:37
3 from previous measure (split into duplet) +
    3 + 3(split into duplet)
    + 4 + 3 (split into duplet)
    3 + 3 (split into duplet)
+ 4 + 3* (split into duplet, ends the chorus)
    --
    In other words he goes from 8 + 5 To 6 + 7.
The reason this works is because the duplet over three 1/8 notes (I marked them with *) remain the end of each measure no matter which groove he's using.
