      Libera me From Hell is inserted in the most epic scenes of this anime, this is one of the classics, giant battle is the right word (maybe too small a word for what that fight is). "Libera" is pronounced with the latin "i", for english speakers is similar with the sound "ee" in "week", "me" is not the english word, is the latin word and sounds like "me" in "mellow".

      I dont know why but when you said on the vid at around 10:00 that you never heard something like this i somehow got this crazy nostalgic feeling of a song.

      You mentioned that the song felt alien, and that's kinda the point. Rap was still pretty new at the time, especially with anime. Often an anime soundtrack fits a single atmosphere at a time, but this is a war of two worlds, opposing themes, clashing points in the universe, the underdog clawing up at the hegemony. That is what the song stands for.

  • @mariokempes9517
    @mariokempes9517 Před rokem +863

    If you didnt read comments under music, it's explanation of why there is this whole duality
    "Libera me from Hell" consists of two very distinct music pieces: Opera and rap. Opera is a very somber and traditionally tragic genre, with themes usually centered around inevitability of fate and human mortality. Opera is supposed to make you experience catharsis and accept whatever painful truth it is trying to convey
    Rap is different. Very different . It's fundamentaly a rebellious genre, very energetic and defiant of traditions and norms. One of the main themes explored in rap is willpower and how it can overcome pretty much any obstacle that can possibly rise in your way.
    "Libera me from Hell" takes this genres and makes them fight to the death. Throughout the whole song rap - symbol of human will, determination and the power of the spiral - struggles against Opera - symbol of fate, depression, stagnation and anti-spiral. At times rap is almost completely drowned by the Opera, only for it to gloriously re-emerge and silence it's opponent.

      Yepp and the part where the lyric goes “revolution ain’t ever gonna televise” I always thought was so cool in context of the show especially. The bigger power will always try to hide all attempts of revolution so no one knows what’s happening and comes to unite and join together so the weak never know how strong they are- how many with the same one voice willing to fight

      I came to the comments just to see if someone explained the BRILLIANT compositional dichotomy of this piece and it's reference to the villains and the heroes through the use of traditional suppressing and depressing music vs energetic, empowering and almost uplifting rap. It literally tells the story of the show, especially the latter half of the show.

      @@GOTGames Its just as he told ya. Basically, its a battle between the inevitable and the revolution. The Opera is the "Antagonist" and the Rap are the "Protagonists" if you pay attention to the way the rap and the opera sing, 1st it starts with the Opera, then changes only to the rap, the battle begins, then at the end they BOTH sing at the same time! struggleing, BUT the rap is so low in volume like they are loosing, until FIGHT THE POWER is like interrupting the opera and screaming! after that part the rap goes higher in volume and the opera is more like the background turning the tables the other way about, flipping the "battle"

    I've always considered this song to be a crystallization of one of TTGL's main themes: the opera representing the stagnant, those who would rather fade away in comfort and ease than risk anything vs the rap representing the progressive, willing to be hurt and risk everything on the chance of making things better.

    • @robertcartledge826
      @robertcartledge826 Před rokem +1

      anime aside progress is good but it has to be done intelligently with some careful thought and planning. and while all progress is change not all change is progress.
      it is much harder to make anything that is already very good any better, and attempting to do so is highly likely to break what is good.
      so while we should continue to advance we need to do so in a more well thought out manner than telling idiot kids to go out and try to change the world, that wont end well.
      but reckless change without any serious reasoning being applied is exactly what progressives advocate for in todays age.

It's given me the ability to conjure an otherworldly amount of willpower out of thin air to tackle any problems that present itself to me. I've regularly scoured the internet for analysis (easily upwards of 200 hours by this point) and almost every time I find more nuance and appreciation for how it incorporates its themes into literally every aspect of its execution.
    Its my #1 media period because it has changed my life. Although I have to admit it's just my unbeatable favorite, but other shows I've watched are critically better. The music in anime tends to rely on the context in the show to help guide emotion. I remember very little about this show, but the 'Row Row! Fight the Power!" has lived in my memory. I couldn't even tell you the scene it belongs to, but the message of the show was 'overcome the impossible" and it did that in spades. This song kind of embodies that feeling.

    The duality of this song is thematically emblematic of the show. The opera the struggles of man, depression, sweeping emotions and orchestras. Opera is a genre defined by sweeping emotions, epochs, tragedies, and then having it broken apart by a strictly rebellious HIP HOP, not just rap but specifically 90's hip hop. The composition of this song, as far as the rap parts go are are heavily inspired by 90's political action hip hop. The themes of this show are about overcoming tragedy through will, digging a path to a brighter and better future for later generations, so having the hip hop kick back in in layers, it lends to the scenery, the imagery and messages of gurren lagann. The way it works, its supposed to clash and blend together in this nonsensical over the top representation of the show.

    I love Pacific Rim (just the first one... not so much the second one) and tbh, that movie is SUCH an homage to mecha anime as a genre. Guillermo Del Toro is a huge mecha and Godzilla fan, and it shows in the film. not in that it's referential _to_ anything in particular... he wanted the film to be its own creation entirely. but a lot of the core tenants of mecha anime are used in terms of the themes and aesthetics. giant robots powered by the connection between two people, pitted against these giant alien biological threats... it's like a playground for anyone who likes designing cool shit, and I think that movie did the absolute MOST where that's concerned. in a way, you tangentially have experienced a taste of mecha anime before... you just might not have known it at the time.

    Gurren Lagann is the coming of age of a meek kid who stands in the shadow of his hero and absolutely dedicated companion. The second season is about the discovery of his meaning of life and way to be. I know that's incredibly vague, but as a guy who's watched it repeatedly for over 10 years, it's most interesting as a follow-up to Evangelion, which has a similar character arc, but terminates on a mentally depressive point.

    The OPERA refers to those who accepts their sad fate and give up and the RAP refers to those who fight against the ones that forces them to accept that sad fate. Both of them combined, it’s a perfect example of our world. Also, At the end the Opera and rap are playing simultaneously. And then the Opera starts to get overwhelming and overshadows the rap but slowly..very slowly the rap gets louder and louder till it's at equal volume to the Opera until finally it utterly drowns it out.

    I guess you can categorize mecha anime into 2 types. Either some degree of tragic war stories or feel good power fantasies. Gurren Lagann is definitely in the second category. Not saying it doesn't have it's emotional parts, and it is a great ride, but it gets beyond ridiculous at times. Still, if you can turn off your brain, it's a great ride. I think shows like Code Geass or Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans are more in the depressing war tragedy side. A really good mecha nobody talks about though is The Vision of Escaflowne. It was a medieval fantasy mech anime made in 1996

    also the rap lyrics fit very well with the theme of the humans in this anime :) Warning moderate spoiler ahead about the enemies motivation
    As the humans advance more and more they litterally start breaking the laws of physics against an enemy that has mastered how to do this and is opposed to the point of genocide against anyone being able to do this, which is why the lines like "do the impossible, touch the untouchable break the unbreakable" fit really well
