I love the electromagnetism slander! So many people failed that course in our year, and I totally agree with the "bone-crusher" description! We were also recommended the Barbara Ryden book, which is a great book and I also found cosmology to be my favourite course so far.
I can imagine! It got slightly better around magnetostatics and onwards. But that course took quite a bit of time and energy. Cosmology as well, but cosmology is pretty cool! Thanks for the awesome comment!

Hi, thank you for these personal reflections into the subjects you have taken. I did not get too often such frank statements about why certain courses felt more interesting and relevant, so I really appreciate you talking about the topics. I am learning Physics on my own (I am in my 50s...) and I am more interested in the theoretical / fundamental sides, so for example understanding the various, but equivalent ways of formulating classical mechanics is much more interesting to me than practical applications or getting my hands dirty with electronics. I would have thought optics to be much higher on your list given your interest in Astrophysics.
Hi! Thank you for the comment! I’m glad the view could be used to some extent in aiding your self-teaching process. Though I have decided not to pursue optics, the decision was purely out of a scheduling efficiency standpoint and checking what I need to apply for certain master’s programs. However, if you’re teaching yourself physics in your free time, I still think it’s definitely worthwhile doing optics. As besides geometrical optics, the subject occasionally also covers things like the wave equation and certain modern physics applications of optics. So if you can go through some bits of something like Optics by Eugene Hecht, you’d definitely have a more well-rounded view of things regarding certain electromagnetic phenomena. I completely understand not needing experimental physics skills and all of the coding in your case. I’m very happy you could motivate yourself to go through the work and teach yourself new physics topics. You can look up the channel Mark Weitzman on youtube as well. He has various videos on book recommendations per physics topics. I wish you the best of luck!
