E46 M3 - Turner vs Hotchkis swaybar difference

  • I run through comparison and difference between the two bars. It is NOT a no-brainer to swap them...
Bars are very different and therefore provide a different amount of roll couple and body roll control.
Turner bar is solid, it is heavier, and you can run it on soft/medium setting, which will be equivalent to running Hotchkis on stiff (because Hotchkis is hollow). Hotchkis is a lot lighter - 10 lbs vs Turner being 19 lbs, so if you are after getting every ounce of unneeded weight off the car, go for it, BUT, just be aware of implications of Hotchkis having impact on the handling of your car if you have softer springs, and potentially not providing enough body roll control, resulting in the car being more loose/playful/oversteery.
I now need to figure out if I want to modify my driving style for the more oversteery nature of the car, play with spring rates, play with rear bar, play with more camber/toe, etc to get it back to neutral.
Front Hotchkis bar part number for E46 M3: 22826F. I got mine on ebay brand new for a really good price.

Which sway bar end links and length did you run with the Turner Sway Bar?

I finally corner balanced my car, and I'm running GC adjustable endlinks. They come as a pair, and I installed both. You only need 1 to avoid preload to corner balance, but they are well made and easier to put on/take off than stock, so I installed both. Now I don't have to deal with stock ones where you have to hold it with a wrench behind the link so it doesn't turn to take the nut off.

Have you tried the hotchkis on medium? How do you like the ride quality of the ohlins?

Ohlins are top shelf, so I love them. I upped the spring rates in rear and lowered spring rates in front to run flat ride (didn't have Ohlins revalved, no need to). Because my front rates are "relatively" lower, I need a lot of help from a swaybar to control roll (which is standard suspension tuning approach for flat ride). Because Hotchkis is hollow it is weaker at controlling roll than Turner. So I run Hotchkis at full stiff and that is not enough (for my specific setup) to keep the car neutral. Running Hotchkis at medium or soft would shift the roll couple more rearward and make the car even more oversteery, so not what I am looking for.
      What setup are you running?

@@mrgizmo7975 I’m running hotchkis front and stock rear on mcs 2wnr with 8k front Swift spring and 6k rear on true coil setup. I’m at the cusp of flat ride with .99 pitch so I’m planning on swapping the springs, but regret I didn’t order 7k springs instead of the 6k.
The roads in San Jose are extremely terrible and I was considering switching from mcs to the ohlins in hopes of them being able to deal with the imperfections better but I’m not sure if they’ll end up just riding the same

Once you get over 1 and less pitchy, you will def notice the difference. Funny you are in San Jose, so am I. I cant tell you comparison of Ohlins vs MCS on street, never tried, but I run Ohlins on pretty much full soft on street and they seem to cope pretty well.

@@mrgizmo7975 I’ve ran the mcs with 10k springs up front and 12k divorced in the rear and they were much more compliant then they are now. Not sure if converting them to true coil caused the overall car to be more sensitive to reactions or if the rear brace is just absorbing the shocks and I can feel it more now that the springs aren’t “diluted” by the bucket location.
I also ran 10k up front and 20k rear for the past year before covering, so I ran flat ride for about a year before going to a 0.99 pitch, hence why I’m so curious if the ohlins or digressive pistons have better blow off on imperfections on the road. Would probably make more sense to have the hotchkis at soft in the current setup, but I probably should swap the springs first to see how 1.33 frequency would feel like

I never had any other shocks before Ohlins (upgraded from stock), so I can't comment on how they compare to Koni, Bilstein, MCS, JRZ, TCK, etc, but based on my research and what you mentioned, digressive, is why I picked them up. Also knew few guys running Ohlins and loving them.
Def try springs first, and obviously play around with appropriate rebound/compression settings.
