Volcano with ammonium dichromate, glycerol and potassium permanganate

I don't understand the use of ethanol in this experiment? Will the reaction solely start with aluminium dichromate, potassium permanganate and glycerol? Or do we need to add ethanot to it too?? Plz help, I'm confused
