The lady who had this built had very good taste! Everything is beautiful. I especially love the feather fans. Thank you for the tour!

The gilded age is back, except everything is decorated tastelessly in beige and cream. I live on the east coast and have visited all the mansions, this is my favorite. The heart shaped staircase is very famous. The house was designed by Stanford White and was modelled after the grande trianon at Versailles.

What a wonderful tour of an amazing Gilded Age mansion; the tour feels so real, as if you're there with the narrator. A book which is chock full of stories of how these folks lived in these mansions during the Gilded Age is "Fortune's Children: The Fall of the House of Vanderbilt". Having this kind of background can bring alive these wonderful relics of another age.

My wife and I went on a tour of Rosecliff shortly after we were married in 1976. Still very beautiful. The French house design is based on that of the Petite Trianon. My wife's cousin had her wedding reception in the ground floor rooms back in the '90's. My former employer in 1972 owned Rough Point on Bellevue Ave. and was president of the Newport Preservation Society. We used to load trucks with china, dishware, furniture and flowers from her estate and greenhouses in Hillsborough, NJ to be shipped to the Breakers for the Newport Jazz Festival.

What an incredible place! Love the ornate ceilings, especially those with the blue sky murals painted on them. It's interesting that there are showers in the bathrooms at all and I bet those were added well after it was built. Back in that era a shower generally consisted of a bathtub, usually a claw foot, with a pipe running from the bath faucet to a shower head and a toggle to switch water flow from bath to shower. Considering how grand and vast everything else in the house is it's rather surprising that they didn't make the showers much bigger when they added them, perhaps subsequent owners weren't quite as wealthy as the folks who built it. Great tour! Thanks for sharing it!

Her name was Theresa Alice "Tessie" Fair Oelrichs. Her father was James Graham Fair and one of the original "Silver Kings" having discovered the Comstock lode in Nevada near present day Virginia City (a la Bonanza) which turned out the largest supply of silver in US history. He husband was Hermann Oelrichs of the wealthy steamship shipping family owning the Norddeutsche Lloyd lines of Germany. He father gave her a wedding gift of one million dollars. Her inheritance put her in the same league as any of the Vanderbilts or Astors and she had her own fortune besides her husbands great wealth. Hermann did indeed pass away at sea aboard the SS Kaiser Wilheim, a first class steamer, but he was not known to have had a disposition for being a seaman or sailor at all. She was known to keep her friends entertained with her "up to the minute" profanity and slowly lost her sanity and would often plead with invisible guests to "stay a little longer," though no one was there. She was a highly flamboyant person and nothing about her was particularly excessive as the times were excessive, that is, the final act of the Gilded Age. She lived at Rosecliff Incidentally, the ballroom of Rosecliff is 60ft long, making it the largest of any of the Newport Cottages.

Did you happen to go to the Newport casino not too far from there. It used to be Jai Lai but is now a casino. I have not been there in about 6 years so I'm sure how much it has been built up. Also, if you're still in the area take a ride around the whole coast, it's remarkable. Also check out Rhode Island's large casino in Lincoln, it's a decent size for the area.

This is the one of the many problems with CZcams. The narrator of this video multiple times refers
to the house as “The” Rosecliff. It’s not “The” it’s just Rosecliff. It was not built by “Tiffany” but Tessie Oelrichs (which the narrator later stated correctly, but never corrected the early error). I’m not picking on this poster in particular but I wish to point out that CZcams loves to ban content based on their narrow little woke agenda but is totally disinterested in the massive amount of disinformation they routinely publish (and CZcams is not a neutral platform but a publisher

I have toured Rosecliff and other cottages in Newport. I am not sure we toured the same house. Rosecliff is one of the more understated homes. Compared to The Breakers especially. You obviously do not understand the Gilded Age. This was their summer home. It is not over the top. It represents a lifestyle that we were and are not a part of. You did not express any appreciation of the craftsmanship preserved for us to appreciate. Your lack of acknowledgement of the movie True Lies obviously shows your dislike of either the movie or the actors involved in the film. Personal biases are inappropriate in your role as commentator. It would have been better to tour the house twice you would have been more prepared. My apologies but just having a camera does not make a good video. It is just a tourist with a camera.

The Guilded Age basically ended over a 100 years ago. Men are no longer captains of industry with socialite wives looking to marry their children off into certain families. No one will ever live that lifestyle again. The home would require drastic remodeling to be usable today. There is plenty of new Wall Street type money building those types of homes today. This is a museum and it will luckily remain that way like Marblehouse, the Breakers, etc.
