A Vacheron Constantin Overseas for Half Price? | Watchfinder & Co.

  • When Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak in 1972, everyone thought the watchmaker had gone mad. The watch was big, it was basic and it was expensive-and it sold by the bucket load. Patek Philippe got in on the action four years later with the Nautilus, and not wanting to be left out, Vacheron Constantin joined the club a year later, completing the 70s trifecta of steel sports watches from the top three. Today, such a watch will set you back from £17,000 and as much as £23,000-but is there something we’re missing that’s just as good for half the price?

I love both of these watches, and I love that the Overseas is you choice to represent the Holy Trinity sport watches.
In this comparison I feel the VC holds its own, thanks in part to clever design details, like the quick change strap system, and the Geneva Seal. These add up to make the VC worth it’s money.
If we compared the Laureato to a Royal Oak, however, none of those apply anymore, so I’d take the cheaper Laureato every time.
I might be slightly biased though, as it has my initials on the dial...

I think it shouldn't be viewed as a rip off of the royal oak but more of a design trend during that era for steel watches. Just like how rock music is different in the 70s with Hendrix, Led Zeppelin etc from the current scene or how German minimalist design of the pilot watch is common across the likes of Stowa, IWC, Wempe and a.lange.
I thought the GP is a refreshing deiviation from the royal oak which I see on almost every banker's wrist and the overhyped waiting list of the nautilus.

@@depthcharge126 I see you've never handled these in person...the bezel is unique, I've love to see another watch with a bezel like it. The blue in the dial is insanely deep in hand. The bracelet construction and detachment mechanism is rarely seen in watches of this calibre. Never judge a product, especially a watch imo, before handling it. The Laureato, in contrast, is starkly boring in person.
Although, fair point, it's really hard to truly justify the cost of any luxury watch, much less one that costs nearly $20k

If you own a VC Overseas Blue dial as seen in this video, it’s value would have gone up easily 50% due to small production capacity of VC as most VC time pieces have to meet the quality of Geneva Hallmark. On the flip side, the GP’s value would have easily knocked down 50% if you purchase it brand new. Great disparities between these two time pieces.

The 42mm VCO in full SS is a perfect sports watch in every way: better looking, more legible in all lighting and tougher than an AP, more water resistance than an AP/PP AND my Rolex Explorer MK2, and it has, IMO hands down, the most beautiful and comfortable steel bracelet compared to any Rolex, AP or Patek you can name. I tried on a GP Laureato with a blue dial at the Paris CDG airport and held it next to my VCO. No competition whatsoever but that said, the GP IS far more watch than its price tag costs you. The fit and finish is astounding at this price point (about 7200€ in duty free) and the steel bracelet is smooth as a babies bottom. If a Vacheron is not in your future I wholly reccomend the Laureato which runs the same MSRP as a new Cartier Santos or Rolex Explorer (if you can find one!)

As I look at my Christopher Ward The Twelve in Nordic blue, it feels unreasonably close to the Overseas for a rounding error of the price. How can a watch be an imitation of another when they are both designed by the same person 🤔 The word "immitaion" here does not apply as it eludes to a lack of originality, which is hardly the case as many designers will have a synonymous design language. I'm not sure about the nautilus though, as I have read conflicting articles about who was the designer behind it, I don't think that patek has ever officially credited the design to Gerald Genta.

So even though they have the same designer, only the first was truely original, whereas the rest were to a design brief; namely, a steel integrated bracelet sports watch in the vein of the RO (he even gave the Ingenieur screws on the bezel), which is the same brief that the designers of the Laureato and 222 received, making them all imitators in a way.

This is my dilemma. I wanted to get the 15500 in blue but not a chance. I happened to notice this video and it has drawn me towards the GP. I happened to see one in Dubai and tried it on. It was so comfortable, much more so than a Rolex. Felt so good on the wrist. But I can't help thinking it's a compromise for the real thing. Or have I just been brainwashed to think that. So tempted

The wording leaves a lot to be desired "the rich wanting to show off their wealth" If someone works hard and is able to afford what they desire....why should they be stigmatised ? Should we all drive a Lada car for example ? Should we all wear a plastic Casio watch ? Surely if the choice is out there then you ought to be applauded if you can strive to get to there ?

    • @Ilestun
      @Ilestun Před 4 lety +1

Instead of calling for stigmatisation, you should consider what is true or not..... because it is the only thing that matters.
What if people wanna show that they are loaded? Nobody said there is anything wrong with it. In fact many people buy fake watches in that sole purpose....to show that they are loaded (while they are not).

While I’m not so sure for Royal Oak money, I definitely agree with the Nautilus. They’re currently going for US$70K+, which is enough for a precious metal complication watch, like an annual calendar, or even a tourbillon (second hand), from any of the Holy Trinity. Why anyone thinks a steel Patek is worth that when you can get a complicated Patek in gold is beyond me.

The Bearded Yorkshireman Well as this video pointed out, the Laureato is an excellent watch that competes (or is at least in the ballpark) with high horology sports watches, for only slightly more than Rolex (the same second hand), yet much less than the Holy Trinity.
They’re objectively good timepieces that you wouldn’t be disappointed in (unless you have your heart set on the AP RO or VC Overseas and you’re settling for the GP, but it sounds like you wouldn’t be doing that).
