- American Cult Series starring Lorne Greene released in 1964: Bonanza - Episode 178 - Old Sheba - After Hoss injures traveling circus wrestler, Bearcat Sampson, during an exhibition match, he and manager, Little Joe, agree that Hoss will take the Bearcat's place in the ring while he recovers; but the circus owner squanders Hoss' winnings and the Cartwrights end up with an unconventional paycheck...Old Sheba, the circus elephant.
Old Sheba
Director: John Florea
Writer: Alex Sharp
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 22 November 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Bronson Canyon, Griffith Park - 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
"Old Sheba" is a scraggly circus elephant, which the Cartwrights receive as payment for Hoss' one-night stand as a big-top performer. Ben and Adam insist that Hoss and Joe return the pachyderm, but the boys are convinced that they can take care of Old Sheba all by themselves. To make a long story short, they can't. Reviews:
"This is a nice humorous episode that makes caricatures of both of the young Cartwrights. Very silly, not a serious moment in the whole show. Enjoyable humor. This episode presents the two sons in much the same way, goofy, that they seemed for brief periods in many other episodes. The difference is that in this one they are "dufuss" the whole time. Hoss does all the work while Joe acts like he is the "one" putting forth all the effort. Dad sees them both as daft. Except for the "wholesomeness" one might think that the writers had an elephant for free and needed a plot to fit it into. See it to find out about the elephant." Written by cylgn on IMDb.com

Adam was so cheeky in this episode😄
The Bonanza comedies are the best stress relievers ever. 🤣🤣🤣
😅👍
I've the comical episodes far better :
Adam gets the adventure when he meets King Arthur , Hoss meets the leprechauns , he had to the Easter Bunny , Joe meets a sailor and ends up helping him with the treasure hunt , and many more .
Most definitely! They also help me hold onto a string of hope in humanity that was at the core of American society for many generations, and now that which we can hope, with the help through remembrance, by witnessing these presentations of days previously lived. They are more than less, a good representation of those times and values hat lasted in our American culture for so long; from the beginning of the Industrial age, until the recent 21st century. (approximately since the covid-19 pandemic era). Onward and forward, friends. (Sylvana)
Just amazing! Old Hollywood is the best. And these kids and pa are the best when they snooker each other. Haha
Hollyweird is a shame today in the world. So sad what it has become.
Joe and Hoss made a wonderful Laurel and Hardy in this episode.
Except it’s kind of the other way around. Joe was Hardy and Hoss was Laurel.
Loved how Pernell always add something more to the role. In the beginning in the circus he was cracking peanuts even it was not his scene. Love it
Pa’s expression when they open the barn door to reveal what they brought home is priceless! Lol
Adman’s too!
Does that mean Old Sheba walked the 20 miles to Virginia City?
What on earth would you do with an elephant?
Pull all those logs up the mountain before the mule-too bad Adam being the one with the brain didn’t think of that idea.
Little Joe and Hoss are the best.
Knowing how all 4 Bonanza stars loved animals, the majestic beauty 🐘 would have been given a complete VIP treatment 🥰.
This has gotta be one of the funniest episodes of this show. I love Adam's snarky comments.
Adam is so damn cute . 🤠
@Emma. Yeah, Adam was really funny.
Hoss saying to Little Joe: "If I wrastled the way you manage, I'd be in the hospital." 😄😆😀
I love these family's & cartwright ♥️
Bonanza writers were smart, each week was written for different people - some are for kids, some love stories for woman and fights for the guys …. Well balanced family show 👍

Hold on their champ, romance is for everyone. Teaches men how to be gentlemen and women how to avoid Cartwright Casanovas😂
@@saphiquefemme - True, but I think women enjoy the sappy love-crap more
@@saphiquefemme hahaha
OK. I have changed my mind. Ponderosa's matador is now my 2nd favourite episode. Hoss and Joe again claimed that they can do something from nothing. Love that duo. But they making best combo together.
I love the way Lorne Green looked at the camera after he sees the elephant. Reminds me of Laurel and Hardy skits
No doubt! And hey! At least Pa, the future Commander Adama aboard the Battleship Galactica, didn't face any cylon in the barn!
Yes at 18:18
Ben Cartwright breaking the fourth wall!
How cute was this episode! I laughed so hard. Godda love the Cartwrights.
Little Jo is small and smarter and Hoss is big and soft heart 🥰🥂
BONANZA is one of a kind.👍
This show is good as well: czcams.com/video/gji2XQwA2O0/video.html
God bless both of these guys they were so great Michael Landon and Dan Blocker they were very special to me growing up watching Bonanza it is still my favorite Western along with The Rifleman
Their love for each other shines in the episodes...
I really loved 🐎 Cartwright ❤❤❤
Hoss. "If I rasseled like you managed I'd be in the hospital". Very very true 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love the way that Sheba the elephant 🐘 was so affectionate towards Ben Cartwright in the evening while Ben was sitting in the chair relaxing. That was very touching. 😊🐘
I feel like a kid again watching this. Loved every moment of this episode. Laughed so hard alone in the house, neighbors must think am nuts 🤣🤣🤣
lolol Some of these oldies make me guffaw out loud every now and then, too! lol
I bet the 4 of them had fun doing this episode. 😂🐘
Maybe not Purnell (Adam), but the other 3 perhaps.
@@KWCline91 Why not him too?
@@katakurifan5213probably because he wasn’t a fan of his role at the time.
@@KWCline91Can't imagine why he wasn't.
@@KWCline91Most of the time, well yeah, completely understood but he did enjoy singing when it was called upon the majority of the time but he did enjoy his role in the episode The Crucible because he had actually said so himself whenever asked what was his favorite role while doing Bonanza , plus even though he complained a lot, whose to say that at times he just might have had a few secret favorites that none of us are aware of?, a person can say and deny some things outright but on the other hand they just may enjoy it but just don't want to reveal it, plus I "ve read that they did get along but it was just that Pernell Roberts was more outspoken about how things should have had more equality and reality about them but oh well such is life , but yeah you'll never know how a person actually does feel even though you are witnessing a lot of negativity because he wasn't always negative, I'm sure that he's had some good days as well he was moreso aware of what fits and what doesn't, at least within his estimation, but those are his thoughts and feelings, not everyone else 's but later Producer David Dortort said himself that he should have listened to Pernell because he was right, too little too late. Love this episode as well as all of my Cartwright family ❤️🤗💯👍👏🏽
Awwww she is beautiful I love elephants 😘
I know most men never grow up, but Hoss and Joe are like teenagers.
Little Joe is always getting him & Hoss in trouble. The look on Little Joes face sometimes is hilarious because of things being said.
Especially when Little Joe comes close to have every bone 🦴 of his body getting busted by ..... you guess it , by Hoss .
Little Joe gets alot ofnp sleeve low key

I love Adams sense of humour too.
Loved this episode poor Hoss just didn't learn little brother worked everything out oh boy you just got to feel for Hoss bless him thank you for brightening another day could you please try dead and gone Pernells last episode and oh yes and some Trapper John oooh Pernell was magnificent ❤
Watching old Sheba follow Hoss to the house was hilarious! LOL! Poor Hoss, he falls for anything Joe concocts.
LOL Ben to Adam at 10:06 - "You keep up the smart talk, boy, I'll give you some rules to follow!"
I can’t stop watching these series we have learnt so much Ben is the the best father anyone can have besides this we have learnt from Cartwrights how to become a really good person their are so many lessons to learn from these series
this is by far the funniest episode I watched
There are so many laughs in this episode! It was a lot of fun to watch.
"for that... MULE?" one of the funniest episodes. Though the one re: that old miner's dog, Walter, was funny, too.
Still love the pancake contest and Hoss and the leprechauns
Funniest episode ever. I laughed so hard. Poor Hoss falls again for little Joe's shenanigans. Too funny.🤣
Even when Hoss would have Little Joe as flat as a pancake . 🥞
Makes you sometimes forget who's the older brother.
People will say, "nostalgia", over my enjoying this and being at such peace watching. But, you know what? This is just good writing, good stories and what real acting by wonderful actors looks like. Love this family. They were rough and tumble, but very close knit and loving at the same time. Nothing like this is made anymore. Not sure if anything made right, will ever be created, again. Thank you Grjngo for putting these up.
Seeing Little Joe sitting on the elephant 🐘 brought back memories of when I sat on an elephant 🐘 several years ago at a circus. I think that I did that in the 1970s. It was quite an experience for me. Yes, the elephant 🐘 did walk a short distance while I was sitting on him or her. Of course someone that worked for the circus 🎪 led the elephant 🐘. I enjoyed it!!
I got to ride one at expo 67 in Montreal. ❤❤
@Claudette Gerety Wow! It's an experience that you never forget and I really enjoyed it a lot!
You know when you can get an elephant with your budget, you've made it lol
lol, for sure
That's why people in Asia look at owning an elephant as a status symbol, as a symbol of wealth, as if the elephant were a Ferrari. Looking at animals as commodities, rather than the sentient beings that they are, makes life hell for the animal. Elephants have suffered a great deal, they've been torture-trained in captivity. It kills up to half of all captive Asian elephant calves. While I realize this is not people's preferred forum for educating about elephants, elephants will soon be extinct (both African elephants and Asian elephants) in both the wild and in captivity, because Man's violence kills elephants faster than they can reproduce. The elephant in this episode was named "Modoc", and was made/forced to perform in circuses in earlier life, and on TV in the 1960's and 1970's. At the time this episode was filmed, she was 68 years old. She was made blind in her left eye because some vile person took a Bullhook to her eye, a very sharp, pointed steel, long-handled hook used for torturing elephants. SMH.
@@cacatr4495 that was very educational and passionate. Thank you.
@@cacatr4495 Oh God. I love all animals, but elephants are so special to my heart. The cruelty of the so called humans towards them makes me feel so angry, mentally disturbed and so sad. Unbelievable how evil people can be. Animals, all of them are innocent even the most called ferocious. Loving animals made me a vegetarian and vegan since early age . The animals I can help are stray dogs and cats. I wish I could help all kind of animals. Only doing that I would be happy. Thank you for your comment - information, despite disturbing for me, but such cruel reality must be told.
Good point.
I wish they kept Sheba!
Same
I figured they would’ve used it to solve the problem.
Hahaha couldn't stop laughing at this episode of bonanza sure miss them 😅
Thanks for uploading this episode
Yes indeed, thank you Grjngo! It would be phenomenal if you could post all the seasons, for Grjngo's are the best audio and picture by far!!
Uncle Charlie is always good for some laughs.I think he has been around since the vaudeville day's
Who don't love good ole' "ray teal" as "sheriff Roy Coffee "?
Honestly, I wasn't expecting an elephant, damn I nearly laughed so hard when I saw Ben's face, I was thinking "this ought to be good."
great episode many thanks
You are welcome! 🤠👌🎬🍿

wow ben looking straight to camera was priceless😄
I have been watching these after many many years of not watching. It is nice to see fun rather than the fights and shooting.
I really expected them to use the elephant to bring down the rr ties, it was the obvious solution, and I know the Cartwright’s are smarter than to not see this sooner.
letting little joe do the thinking is a scary prospect
At that point in the series, yes, but Little Joe grew up.
I have just about seen every Bonanza episode. It is the story titles that I remember and or the scenery that reminds me. I grew up on this type of accountability and still learning at 67 years a couch potato. All I can say about my life is that I believe in what I was supposed to do as a kid. I am blessed to say I have never met anyone in my life I did not like. So If I did, I loved them!
Adam “You gotta say there’s a lot of livestock there.”
I love Sheba!
Ben is a savage. I want to be a Cartwright.
Don't forget, they were doomed to be bachelors. 😆
@@ydocc3374 . ... Hello 👋 L😀 L you are right about that 6 -11-2021
One of the rare episodes where there’s humour n no violence. Yes not a single gunshot nor flare-up n the only firings done were from Ben’s mouth reprimanding the 2 sons.
So the wrestling match doesn't count for some form of violence? 🤔
@@user-pd7il3xz5j that’s violence to u ? By Bonanza’s standard it’s child’s play. U must b a gal
@@KKohl Yes sir, a gal I am. I do consider wrestling violent, though I love most of the Bonanza episodes. Great memories of watching it with my Grandpa, may his soul rest in peace.
@@user-pd7il3xz5j yes bless his soul
@@user-pd7il3xz5j The fake wrestling that's on tv is violent when they overact. The wrestling on tv is 100% fake. The real wrestling that the high schools had in the LATE 1960S was not violent. My brother was a high school wrestler back then so I'm speaking from experience. I don't know if it's violent in the high schools now.
I really thought this episode was going to end with them using Sheba to haul the logs, and was waiting for one of them to figure it out.
Exactly. I thought it would be Adam to come up with that idea.

Even Hoss came up with the idea of using Sheba to plow. Adam!!!
This episode is the most hilarious, I can't stop laughing 🤣 😂 😆 😄
😅
Terrific fun. Thanks for that.
Glad you enjoyed it!
elephants are very comfortable to ride i rode one once very comfortable😊
I did too. Yes, they are.🐘
The way Ben broke the 4th wall 😭
A funny episode with an elephant and the amazing William Demarest👍
43:12 Adam's hilarious!
Hoss face does make me laugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅and little jo he like trouble 🤣🤣i like he too bad 👍
This show is great
This has to be the maddest I have ever seen Ben.
Nope. The maddest I have ever seen "Ben" was in the "Joe Cartwright, Detective" episode, when . . I better not tell you, it would spoil it for you. It was hilarious, though, one of the best comedy episodes Bonanza had.
@@cacatr4495 Nope the episode The Gamble 6-11-2021

All the episods are fantastic!
Hoss & Joe, should have taken their money after each match.
Absolutely. Now that would have been "good managing!"
One of the funniest episode
This episode aired in November, 1964. Bonanza Guest Star William Demarest (1892 -- 1978) later went on to join the "My Three Sons" TV Cast, as "Uncle Charley" in September, 1965.
So funny , so cute , so heartwarming , and so smart . Poor Ben . He should've made Hoss and Little Joe return the elephant themselves . 🐘
He eventually did 😅
@@jewlion219 yeah, but before he had a brilliant idea, which would’ve been great.
Best lesson my dad taught me in life is to never worry no matter what it is just take life as it comes because what shall be will be. Folks nowadays worry about absolutely everything.
Felt bad for the poor elephant.it was so old it had a hard time standing back up.
Oh boo hoo to you. They're a lot more sturdy than ya think. A shame it distracted ya to this being a hilarious ep and did NOT abuse any animals.
Don't fret, all elephants get up slowly.
@@user-pd7il3xz5j That true. Of course, the weight of the average adult elephant 🐘 is a ton which is 2,000 pounds. It's only logical that an adult elephant would get up slowly. You're absolutely correct G.
@Rand. You don't know much about elephants. The average weight of an adult elephant 🐘 is a ton which is 2,000 pounds. Therefore, it's perfectly normal for an adult elephant to get up slowly. They all do.
If you were that fat you would also get up slowly.
Hilarious sitcom episode. And I loved the false Chekhov’s gun
This was by far the funniest episode I have seen today... Lol 😅😆!
Right toward the end, when Hoss was pulling the logs with his 'brute strength' -- I really thought they were going to pay some rental fees to use the elephant to move the logs.
They would have if one of them had thought of that right away before Little Joe and Hoss gave Sheba back to the circus 🎪 owner.
This episode cracked me up 🤠
My 3 Sons' Uncle Charley as ringmaster!
His name was William Demarest.
Want to hug ole Sheba
Joseph tries your patience, doesn't he?
Poor Old Sheba, she walked between Virginia City and the Ponderosa six times!
Meu amor Adam é único, lindo demais, maravilhoso 💔💔.
Parabéns meu amor 👏👏.
Well Said Rob. P 👍
You all need to read the life of this elephant in the book "Modoc" a true story by Ralph Helfer. It will make you cry and love Elephants forever!
Adam’s, “uh-huh“ at the end of the episode is literally my favorite moment of the whole series.
Now to imagine these gentlemen all got paid $10,000.000 for each of these episodes, fun or irony, wow what a great choice of careers. And this $$ is in the 60's, that was like a $ million today.
So funny
That was William Demarest playing the circus 🎪 owner. He played Uncle Charlie in "My Three Sons."
Little Joe and Hoss Cartwright found out that never make a deal with Circus 🎪 Traveler and taking care of a Elephant 🐘.
Did Ben just broke the 4th wall at 18:21???😂😂😂😂😂😂
Funny as hell!
This episode is just too funny🤣🤣🤣😂😅
An elephant! Hahahahahah...that's funny!..

Poor elephant
I don't laugh much inlife but this episode tickles me untold. Boy Bonanza where do we find it now?
Right here.
By the time Joe screams it was awesome hahahaha. The voice was even hoarse, poor 14:51
43:04 oh, so, now Ben calls her a Royal Pachyderm, !
Why not?
44:26 ...... Little Joe! Come on, man, you're making Hoss do all the work! 🙁
The writers throw a ball, then a fast pitch, then a curveball, what's next is difficult to imagine, only humor and irony, and oh what irony.
