One of the most beloved villages in Portugal
Óbidos is a medieval village located in the district of Leiria, one of the best preserved in Portugal. Founded in 1195, the village has churches, restaurants, craft shops and other businesses, but it is the castle and its walls that attract tourists and dominate the landscape.
We went to Óbidos by train, leaving Caldas da Rainha where we were staying. The trip only took 5 minutes and costs approximately 3 euros round trip.
Currently the Castle, which is a National Monument, works as an inn, so you can stay there if you want. But if you prefer, there are also other accommodations available in the village itself.
To get to the village, leaving the train station we had to go up a dirt road, which can't be fun to do carrying luggage. So keep that in mind.
The wall
It is possible to walk along the narrow wall, and enjoy the view of the village and the surroundings. You go up on your own, there is no one looking after you and there is no single direction to go, which means that in many stretches you will cross paths with other people coming from the opposite direction, and they will have to share a small space on the wall.
We found the route a little dangerous and with a high risk of accidents. Don't go if you are afraid of heights. And we wouldn't let small children climb the wall. There is a high risk of falling and some cases of people who have had accidents and even died falling off the wall.
7 wonders of Portugal
In 2007, a poll was held in Portugal in which the Portuguese and inhabitants of the country could choose their favorite monuments and elect the seven wonders of Portugal, and Óbidos Castle came in second, just behind another castle, Guimarães, proving that the Castle is not only very well known, but also very much appreciated by all.
The Village of the Queens
D Dinis gave Óbidos as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel. The tradition was launched and then until 1834, the village became part of the dowry of ALL the queens of Portugal.
The Walled Village Gate
It is the main entrance to the village and was built around 1376. There, the statue of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the patron saint of Óbidos, was placed and later the chapel was decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles.
Among the events that take place in Óbidos during the year, the medieval market of Óbidos, the Literary Village, Holy Week, the Chocolate Festival and Vila Natal stand out.
