The "roman style standards", and not only these, are quite universal in west Europe military history. Napoleon gave the roman legion eagle to his regiments. But it's to say that the german "signas" were adapted to the traditional ones of this country. Both BRD and DDR used the same "signa" and standards. During the nazi period the german army continued to use the same "signa" and standards of the german imperial army. The traditons don't die.

No, the NVA used communistic symbols while the Bundeswehr and Wehrmacht used and uses German eagles
The distinctive NVA helmet was designed at the end of WW2 to be a cheap and easy helmet to manufacture. The NVA couldn't use the stalhhelm design for obvious political reasons so they used the aforementioned helmet instead,

It was originally a song made about the peasant revolt and co-opted by the far right. Ernst Busch made a lovely rendition of it as it is a leftist song at heart
