Thought I would like to share the following with The 3rd Rail.
M Track Cleaning. I may have an easy solution. I glued some garage floor felt and wrapped it around a narrow piece of wood that fits between the rails as well as the sides of the wood. I have found by rubbing it over the track it cleans off dirt or residue oil quite well and it does not catch on the centre power supply rail. To prove the track is clean I wrap a white cloth around the piece of wood and redo the cleaning procedure again.
Then check to see how dirty the white cloth might be.

I am trying to automate a switch with the first sensor rail but i can't make it work. How would you do it?
I am trying to make it as follow: A train drives over this sensor rail and then a switch switches to a certain position.
Connect the red or green plug (on one of the blue wires) to the switching track. If your switch is connected to the lighting circuit on the same transformer you are using for the track it should work. It won't work if you haven't connected the yellow wire to anything.
Hey! On the subject of tracks, how do you keep your tracks clean? The spiky third rail tends to snag just about everything I’ve tried to wipe it with. Any tips?
Running trains regularly should be enough to keep the center contacts operational. I almost never have to touch them. Usually, I clean them if I have to install a piece of track that has been unused for very long time. In this case or if I get into issues otherwise, a single gentle pass with a track rubber is usually enough to get things going again.
@@The3rdRail ok cool. I just ordered a big pack of used tracks off of ebay, and many of the pieces have a little bit of built up around all three rails; I'm nervous about it getting up inside my locomotives.
I am an extreme novice so forgive me if this is a stupid question. What happens if you are running a train with lighted cars when using switching tracks to control a signal or switch? If the pickup shoe on the locomotive switches a signal when it goes over it, would a car with its own pickup shoe switch it again when it goes over the switching track?
Hi, there are not silly questions. You are correct, the switching will be actuated by every pickup shoe.
@@The3rdRail Thank you for the reply. Aside from not running those types of cars on lines I want to automate, is there another way to trigger switches and signals without using the switching tracks?
In the marklin program of the time you only have switching tracks and contact tracks. Today, there are other options: reed contacts, infrared gates etc etc. What I did on the current layout was to install relays that interrupt the current between contact/switching tracks and signals temporarily. When a train leaves a block, it sets the block signal to red, at the same time, the relay cuts the connection to the green side of the signal. The connection is re established when the train leaves the following block. I described this in various videos on the channel in the playlist Layout 2021 (it should be in the phase 4 videos: block system part one or phase 4 appendix braking modules)
