- This is Kacee's first time watching reaction to the movie The Green Mile (1999). Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

Delacroix burned down a house and there were people inside who died in the fire. Not sure if he knew there were people in there. Been a long time since I read the book.

30noir Del got drunk and sexually assaulted a girl. To cover up his crime he killed her and then burned the body. The fire spread to a nearby building. I think it was an apartment building with multiple families and children. So he didn't really mean to kill most of his victims, but there was still the first one that he did mean to, although when he was drunk. By the way the first guy who was executed, Bitterbuck, killed a man in a dispute over a pair of boots. I think he was drunk too.

When John Coffey punished Percy, he also saved Briar Ridge's patients from the abuse they would otherwise have suffered.
That thought actually never occurred to me before.
I may be a terrible person but, when Percy shot Wild Bill, the first thought that went through me head was, "Well! That fixes everything".

This movie is a masterpiece. Tom Hanks was terrific, but Michael Clarke Duncan was phenomenal. The fact that he didn't win an Oscar for this is absolute BS. The entire cast was great -- even the actor playing Percy (he was great at being someone you couldn't stand). I love that you went into this without knowing any of the more supernatural elements to it because it really changes the tone of the movie and is such a surprise when it first happens. Wonderful choice for a movie to react to.
You have to give respect though to Michael Caine. When he won the award for Cider House Rules (which he is also magnificent in), he even shared his admiration and respect to his fellow noms, including MCD and Haley Joel Osment for Sixth Sense:
"...thinking of how the Academy changed "The winner is..." to "The Oscar goes to...". And if ever there was a category where the Oscar goes to someone without there being a winner, it's this one. Because I do not feel like being the winner. You have Michael, who I'd never heard of quite frankly, who is astonishing. You have Jude [Law], who is going to be a big star no matter what happens. You have Tom [Cruise], who if you had won this your pot price would have gone down so fast. Have you any idea what supporting actors get paid? And we only get one motorhome, a small one. And Haley Osment, what an astonishing... where is he? There he is. Haley, when I saw you I thought, well that's me out of it. So really, I'm basically up here, guys, to represent you as what I hope you will all be, a survivor."
The Percy actor is so good his own mom cheered when Brutal clocker him in the face after Del. At least that is the story I remember and like to take it for fact.
I agree, there wasn't a bad performance in the bunch. Percy needs special commendation though, the actor made him SO hateful, and yet maintained the fragility of the character's ego. A fantastic performance, a fantastic film... but so hard to watch.

This movie means so much to me, not only for the message but because of how I saw it. I was 10 years old watching this alone at night in the living room. My bedtime was stricly 9pm and I was halfway through the movie at 10. My mom came in obviously angry I was up and when I told her I was watching The Green Mile she stopped for a moment, looked at the screen and said, "Go to bed when this goes off." That blew my mind and made me wonder how this movie was so powerful that my strict mother bent the rules just so I could finish watching and every moment was worth it. I have my criticisms of Stephen King, but the movies and their production bring a whole new experience

Quite possibly my most favorite film of all time. I've probably watched the film and watched people react to this at least fifty times and it still just guts me every single time. I love watching people discover this for the first time.
This movie is perfect. It takes everyone on a rollercoaster ride through feels city. Jon Coffey saying "I’m sorry for what I am." gets me every time. Thank you for sharing your reaction to this masterpiece.
The book is amazing. This is one of the few movie adaptations that worked really well.
This is my absolute FAVORITE movie of all time. I will always cry at the end. I'm not made of stone. RIP Michael Duncan, you will forever touch our hearts with your performance in this film.
1:42 It wasn't until 1937 that the first antibiotic (sulfanilamide) that could treat urinary tract infections became available. Prior to that, there wasn't a whole lot doctors could do for you. Either your body eventually healed itself or you died.

No, he would've been given sulfur tablets which was mentioned while he was talking to his wife about seeing a doctor. It was an excruciating thing to go through which is why he didn't want to take them.
The doctor still gave me sulphates alongside antibiotics 10+ years ago. Threw 'em up though, even when I staggered when I took 'em. The doctor had to give me something else. After that it was gone pretty fast. Tip for UTIs : instead of searching for pure cranberry juice (pricey and mostly water) make a smoothie out of jellied cranberry sauce, ice and water in the blender! One can will make 2 or 3 depending on how much or how strong you want. You don't need sugar because it's already sweetened. Much more economical, too.🤪😜❤
You're the first one to pick up that John may have been much older than he appeared too. In one scene, you can see he has scars on his body, vaguely hinting that he may have been part of slavery some 90 years prior. Paul showed age because only part of the power spilled into him.
This was the kindness John was talking about. He may very well be immortal to natural cause like aging and disease, but he can't kill himself out of his faith to god. Paul freed John.
Yeah, in the book they mention he was scarred before he grew, so it’s suggested he was born into slavery. Or that’s how I thought of it. Imagine carrying all that around for that long. Poor John.
black people were whipped in those days as well. you are assuming the magic gave him enhanced age but in reality scientifically speaking hispowers could have restored the size of the telemores
I just finished reading this book today! I’m not kidding. I downloaded the PDF version and read it at work here and there when I had down time. I’m still coming off an emotional high and low. The final chapter isn’t in the movie. Which is a good thing because my heart couldn’t have taken more tragedy in this already perfect film adaption. Great reaction.
What's the final chapter?
It’s about his wife’s death in 1956, it’s gruesome and depressing. He’s flashing back.
LOVE all versions of this story. It’s one of the few times I recommend seeing the movie first. Then the book just gives more detail and backstory. It’s truly an example of correctly adapting a book to film.
I highly highly suggest checking out the audiobook. Frank Muller does the voices so subtly you forget it’s one guy reading it.
I also love the backstory of how this magnificent tale came to be.

Frank Darabont directed 3 incredible Stephen King films, Shawshank Redemption, The Mist and this.
For context of John's ability: John has what is known as the shine. Several other characters from Stephen King's work have it as well. (Mostly notably Danny Torrence and Dick Halloran from the shining) The Shine can vary from person to person, like Telekinesis, Telepathy, seeing ghosts, Astral projection and many others
Thats just an hypothesis though. A lot of different type of powers exists in Stephen King's universe, and not all of them are the shining.
So is John a shiner ? That's only for King to say. You can think yes, you can think no and not be wrong.
As someone who read all King's, I dont think its the shining.
@@Camuska the doctor sleep novel has descriptions of the shine that match john coffees powers In Doctor Sleep Danny Torrence is able to suck sickness out of a human which is described as steam. He then releases this steam on adversaries causing them to die. This action fits with exactly what John was shown to do with the warden's wife then unleashing the steam on Percy who he caused to go insane.

We all know Stephen King is the goat of horror. He’s also an amazing fantasy/drama author as well. I enjoyed your reaction and commentary for this movie. I saw this at the theater over 20 years ago and everyone in the theater was crying just like I was. I still cry. This was a superbly acted movie.
Stephen King added his own elements to this, but it was actually inspired by the real life execution of George Stinney Jr. A 14 yr old executed for killing 2 white girls in South Carolina in 1944. 1000 people crowded a courtroom to watch a jury deliberate for 10 mins, after appointing a tax attorney running for office to defend him. His family was run out of town so they were never allowed to see him. On the day of his execution he was too small for the chair so they had him sit on a Bible. The case was reopened in 2004 and John Stinney's murder conviction was vacated in 2014.

@jackwhitbread4583 nowhere in my comment did I say it diminished his talent. He's actually one of my favorite authors. The fact that he touched on that and brought it up openly in interviews made me appreciate him that much more. Many people are unaware of the history behind those events, especially in today's time where they're making efforts to bury history.

Your not the only one!! Greg over on the Reel Rejects watched it for the first time and cried just as much as you!!! The 2 saddest parts about John is he had the mental capacity of an 5-8 year old and with his amazing abilities he really could have helped the world not just by healing those he chose to but by people witnessing his Devine type of abilities would really help reinforce that God does exist and that our world can be so much better!!!

Every single actor in this movie did such an incredible goddam job. There aren't words that do it justice.
It's a testament to the talent of the writer, director, and cast that you like who your ment to like and hate who your ment to hate.
Del's final moments are just so horrible. He was a convicted murderer and by every metric he deserved the chair. Del was not a good person, he raped and murdered a young woman and when he tried to burn her body he accidentaly burned down a house and killed 6 more people. The man was gonna pay for his crimes with his life and no matter the horror he commited, just like every single human being he also deserved a moment of kindness in his final moments. His last desperate hope was that his little mouse friend would bring some joy to people and in some small way try and recompense for the evil that he had commited. Paui and Brutal had the kindness and compassion to grant this dying man a last happy thought to go out with. Percy's stepping on that dying mans last moments is just so heartbreaking and sad, on top of that Percys sadistic idea of not wettting the spunge. The worst part is Percy didnt even do it for the woman that had been raped and murdered or the families that had been destroyed. Percy did it because he got made fun of for pissing himself.
Doug Hutchison did such an amazing job at making you hate Percy, just fantastic acting from him!

Greetings from 'Down Under'.. as a now 50yo, I saw the GM when it was originally released in my 20's & still do this day, it makes me react emotionally. I find it hard to comprehend, that so many CZcamsrs 'movie reaction' videoers haven't seen such classics - regardless of whether they were born in the 90's or later? Cheers

This is one of my favorite adaptations. Its "Lord of the Rings" close. It's an excellent book, but far more haunting.
The whole cast was stellar. Sam Rockwell killed it but Doug Hutchison made me hate Percy worse than the baby raping child killer he guarded. It's mind blowing really.
I hadn't watched this movie in years and just starting watching reactions on it yesterday. I guess I changed because the intensity of the movie was so much more. Watching it with someone who had never seen it before certainly makes a difference and sort of verifies that what I feel was real.

We have to give thanks to Bruce Willis because Michael Clarke Duncan aka Big Mike (John Coffey) was one of Bruce's costars in previous year's movie, Armageddon. Big Mike plays one of Bruce's character's workers, Bear. Bruce suggested Big Mike for the role of John Coffey to the producers of Green Mile. Like his character, Big Mike was a gentle giant according to his close friends that knew him.

Problem with opening up of Coffey's case is that timeline of this movie was in 1935. Segregation Laws were in effect in the Deep South. Sad Times. Plus, John Coffey according to Stephen King is reference to another JC. Coffey choose his fate because he was too tired! Paul (Hanks) is like Pontius Pilate let sacrifice of Lord's Angels as Pilate washed his hands of the execution. Paul asked Coffey wanted to do like escape, but Coffey balked the idea.
This movie is a masterpiece. Writer / Director Frank Darabont has another prison drama masterpiece (also from a Stephan King story) called "The Shawshank Redemption". If you haven't seen that one then it should go to the top of your must watch list.

Just imagine what Percy would have been like as an employee at Briar Ridge as opposed to a medicated resident.

Apparently John Coffey's character is loosely based off a popular character from another famous book! They're both similar in that they share the same initials, and perform miracles like heal the sick and wake the dead. Both are also empaths and feel other's pain. They were both accused of being something they aren't and eventually executed. What's amazing is that this story is being told...according to Paul (Hank's character).

The thing is, the guy from the other book taught forgiveness. John Coffey punished Bill and Percy.

I remember being about 17 and the shop opposite work sold books and one caught my eye. The green mile but it came in a series of books, each one a different colour. Many years later, I bought the compilation. King explains at the beginning that he wanted to write it as Charles Dickens used to write his novels. I'll tell you this, it is extremely hard to read it with tears flowing.
It is also the first movie from a book that I've seen that actually follows it almost perfectly.
The runtime gets you shook for sure, but it's the easiest 3hrs. The flow of this movie is so good!

One of the greatest movies! In the novel, it's explained that Arlen Bitterbuck (the older Native American man who's executed first in the film) killed a man over a pair of shoes and Del was an arsonist, murderer, and rapist. Hence why they were on Death Row.
Bitterbuck isn’t Asian, he is Native American. That’s why Percy called him “Chief” after he was executed. 🙂

One of the few perfect movies in my opinion. Perfect casting, perfect performances, perfect writing, perfect direction. Everything is just right.
A side note…the older Paul..retired prison guard…played the preacher…in Little House on the Prairie..know his face ..forgot his name..such is life..when you get older..a lot of things you remember..some,you don’t..but you accept it..and a couple of years ago..I saw the headline that science now says…70 is the new 50..but that’s pretty much if you take care of yourself..some salad…walking 3 kilometers a day..every day…helps..eating better like fish and chicken..that’s my ticket..when they made the movie..him saying he was 108 years old…sounded pretty old..maybe reworked…116 still…Sorry for the interruption…now back to the flicker show…or 120 might have sounded old to me…
5 1/2 minutes into the movie you said Percy has got to be the crazy prison guard…not knowing how right you would be…dead right…THE GUY SAID..like his cheese slid off his cracker…I friggin loved that…
Hi Kacee!🙂I've seen this as a no cry challenge with a few reactors. This film takes place in 1932, where black people were convicted with far less evidence than John was, unfortunately. I never thought about John being older than he seemed. Maybe that's why he is tired and wanted it to end. Believe it or not, there is another prison film written by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont, the same director of this film. It is "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). It is a very highly rated film with a 9.3 on IMDb. Great job reacting to this highly emotional film on your own, Kacee!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Ya pretty sure this is one of like four movies ive seen that could be a perfect movie. Cast editing production just such an incredible story. No matter how many time u watch it always heartbreaking like the first time.

I saw a Behind the Scenes video on this movie, and Doug Hutchison offered $20 to anybody who could recite his lines during the Del crucifixion scene verbatim. He said he lost $60. Then he found out they were just reading them off cue cards that were behind Hutchison's back.
The actresses who played the two girls liked Sam Rockwell (Wild Bill) so much that they kept giggling when they filmed the scene where he threatened to kill them.
I know everyone talks about how great Michael Clarke Duncan was and of course Hanks but we also have to appreciate Barry Pepper. He's so underrated

I think the final shot is the death of Mr Jingles. Which leaves Paul now completely alone and sets a timetable for his death. In a movie the spends a lot of time dwelling on death it would seem most fitting to end it with one. I love this movie so damn much and the final scene makes me cry every time.

The only thing the guards maybe could've done was to tell the warden Bill confessed to the murder of the girls and that was why Percy snapped and killed him. But I don't think John would've wanted that, either. I think he was just ready to go.

The Green Mile is definitely in the top 10 best movies of all times. I get emotional every time I have seen it. I believe many of the same people who did Shawshank Redemption also was involved in this film.
Yeah. Frank Darabont wrote and directed both this and Shawshank (also adapted from Stephen King, a novella from Different Seasons). He also did The Mist and has or had been trying to get an adaptation of King's The Long Walk (published under the Richard Bachman pseudonym) for a long time...
Perhaps controversially, I love Green Mile a bit more than Shawshank, though not denying that Shawshank is still a god-tier film itself...

In the book, Paul thinks about how the men that do the crimes are already dead by the time they get to the Mile. All that’s left is a shell that the anger already abandoned.

When watching a stephen king movie, and finding yourself asking questions, read the books. The answers are in the books, and his bibliography creates a beautiful multiverse of characters

Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) is the same height as Tom Hanks and David Morse, they created the height differences with camera angles and having MCD stand on planks//risers, even had Tom Hanks stand/walk in a trench for some scenes......
The book is set in 1932, but since the Director wanted to include the Footage from the Movie "Tophat," which did not come out until 1935, they changed the year in the movie.
This a "Shawshank Redemption" were both Written by Stephen King and made by the same Director.
This movie is probably the greatest adaption of a book into a film ever made.
The reason they called "dead man walking" is to warn people that the person they are walking has nothing to lose. As in nothing to lose from attacking guards, other prisoners etc.

One of the most beautiful movies.
It's worth noting that the director, Frank Darabont, brought us Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, and the first two seasons of The Walking Dead but essentially retired after years of being mistreated by the industry. The biggest culprit was apparently AMC who breached his contract and unjustly fired him from The Walking Dead, a show that earned it's reputation on the back of his writing and direction (which they then took and ran into the ground a couple seasons later).
We missed out on years of his amazing talent because of AMC. The small silver lining is that after fighting them in court for a decade Frank Darabont won the lawsuit and received a nine figure settlement.
This is one of those movies that makes you grow as a person
john coffey is an angel that is why he can do the things that he can do.
Extrapolating from Mr Jingles and how much longer his lifespan has been than normal (well over 80 years, vs the 2-3 year lifespan a normal field mouse would have), Paul's looking at a lifespan of well over 2000 years...his Green Mile will be long indeed. Sounds amazing until you really think about it, as his body is still aging and deteriorating, and everyone he comes to know and care about will die off around him while he endures...then it becomes a horror story, a subtle horror of existential dread instead of jumpscares, but horror none-the-less.
This, Misery, and The Shining are probably the best of the film adaptations of Stephen Kings writings.
They explain Percy's backstory in the novel, dear Kacee. He started a fire that killed several people.
