I've been to Slab City many times since 2009. I met Leonard way back then and he told me while I helped him do some work on Salvation Mountain "somebody from something called Woogle Earyh came by and took a bunch of photos today. Have you ever heard of Woogle Earth?". He was of course talking about Google Earth, at a time when Google was still not a household name yet.
Thank you for this most excellent documentary! I think it shows that humans can get along and be content if left to their own devices.

It's what majority of post world apocalypse communities would instill from.. The idea that they're survivors therefore will do what's done to them and their own to create that cycle. It's the whole idea of a low income neighborhood. The odds of one sticking it out as neighbors or a close community is next to rare. It's why organized crime like the Mafia can never flourish as families who own generations. Next family to rule and spread "fairness". I won't even get into the Cartel style of family.

I really liked this, it's well done and in no way I see, judgemental.
My wife and I of 40 years are for the first time in our lives homeless. We have been for two months here in Ocala Florida.
We live on unfortunately private land owned by a large corporation and there are a few others here.
Being disabled I can't walk very far and my wife a 3 time stroke victim has to walk to get our necessities.
We live in a tent, as do the others here, and it's been bitterly cold and lately raining a lot. I say all this because I see slab city as a better situation than ours currently.
I'm originally from California, and while I miss the deserts and mountains I don't miss the issues of my home state.
Anyways, I liked everyone that was on the video, including the investigator/videographer, good job sir, good job...
In closing, not everyone who has become homeless is a criminal or addict, sometimes you become old and get sick and just can't afford to pay a house payment.
Understand, we are all human and have worth, both my wife, a certified chef, and I a business owner just have things go south.

By far the best documentary I've seen on Slab City. It's crazy how all these people found each other. It seems like a lot of them have suffered through a lot of pain and they found a community where they wouldn't be judged. My husband was a victim of abuse and suffers from mental illness and he's a lot like Bob. He just believes in being a good person and the golden rule. Treat others how you'd like to be treated. Another crazy thing is when you asked them what their biggest wish was and most of them had selfless wishes. They didn't wish for money or anything material. They just want people to have compassion for each other and not judge. I'm glad they have found each other and a community where as long as you treat others with respect, you will be shown the same respect. It's how the world should operate.

Reminds me of 29 palms down the hill from the military base. The base is not very active these days, but back in the 40's and 50's there was a big air force training compound. They built some houses down in the nearby wonder valley for the military wives, but it's a low point in the middle of the high desert, heat gets trapped in there. Daytime temps in the summer regularly exceed 105. So when the base shrunk down all the houses were immediately abandoned. The base started using the area to dump bits and pieces of building materials. A bunch of crazy old vietnam vets moved in, started building a shantytown. I got stuck there for a couple of weeks back in 2009. I'll never forget the people I met. Lotta people with nowhere else to be.

Yes, and no; just about every resident out there is living off of some type of government program rather it be: Social Security, food stamps, disability, cash aid, donations, etc. So, even though it may appear on the outside that this is a fully self-sufficient community behind the curtains they are being supported by our tax dollars.

22:15 -the same thing happens in poverty stricken areas everywhere, actually. Though I am much better now, there was a time in my life when I was one step above homeless in the middle of West Virginia. I can compare it to that because I'd been homeless for a relatively long time as a youth. Anyway, we had to move into the first place that would have us due to extreme financial distress. The place we got was in a run down trailer park. It was a whole new world in there. Yes, people would communicate and help each other. I provided meals and a place to stay for park children experiencing hard times. For example, my daughter's friend's parents became unemployed so we kept her until the family attained employment. Near the end of the month, when everyone was broke, we'd help with transportation as we were one of two families with a vehicle. But what he says about the places being raided, that is exactly what happens even here in Central West Virginia. Everyone in the park would go take whatever they wanted or needed when someone went to jail, which turned out to be very often. It even happened to me during a week long hospital stay. Everyone promised to keep an eye on things, but when I returned, my home had been ransacked. All medications gone, my clothing pulled out and most gone. Pots and pans, gone. Hygeine products, gone. Even tools and cleaning products were gone. What really got me though, was all the food was gone from my pantry and freezer. There were so many people involved that no one told who did it and no one saw anything. I was never happier to move out of a place in my life.

Im currently living in my rv (2 years now) with my bf and tiny dog and cat but we live at a year around rv park in the mountains in California so im waaay up north. We have a similar *law* system because the police hate coming up here. We dont have major crime and 90% of our community are felons etc (my boyfriend and i are the only ppl ive met here that dont do hard drugs). I feel safer here than the city! I can go outside and the only thing i really worry about are natural pred. Like a bear😂 you guys can keep the city life i was a nurse for 19 years. Im good over here. There are hints of it in this doc--but I would just say that while the residents talk a lot about freedom, no one caring about expectations, etc., and undoubtedly those sentiments are genuine, there is also a cultural undercurrent that is actually similar to what is heard and seen in prisons. For certain people that might work, but I have known a lot of homeless who would rather be cold than live with the tensions that can go with that.

The fire at the end was the dose of reality punctuating the druggy hot spring chill sesh. The fire department and police still respond, even though the inhabitants don't want to be a part of the system they inevitably rely on in the event of an emergency. This was a really good documentary. Well done.

    • @silvergirl7810
      @silvergirl7810 Před 8 měsíci +15

That really hit me- they don’t want to be part of ‘society’ that they don’t fit into and are badmouthing the ‘system’ but the second they have an emergency they are on the phone ‘expecting’ all the response and service needed for their emergency. I’m not saying they shouldn’t get it- I’m just saying it’s hypocritical and once again it’s that hippie notion where thank goodness someone in society isn’t on drugs and is organized because if they were in charge and I called for an emergency I’m not sure someone would show up help or anyone at all.

Me too!! People in the comments are glamorizing this place. No readily-available drinking water, no plumbing, no air conditioning in 105+ heat, animal feces and garbage and flies and dirt everywhere, not to mention if you leave for any length of time your place is looted, or if you piss somebody off your place is burned down. And another thing, most of these people are still substance abusers or messed up from past substance abuse, and I'm not talking about weed. Nice as they might be, just the constant manic talking would drive me nuts. And before anyone comes at me, I have close family members who abuse heavy drugs and alcohol, and I've had to live with it and try to stay sane in very insane surroundings and circumstances, so I do know what I'm talking about. I can usually spot the signs, actions, and way of speaking of substance abusers, and again, I'm not talking about weed. I'd give most people one year of living there (to experience all four seasons) before they'd go running back to toilets that flush.

I’d really like to know whose camp caught fire? And how did they fair? Outside of the obvious of course… my heart sunk when I heard the dogs, and was hoping that wasn’t a person/child screaming towards the end. I love watching videos about Slab City and the Salton Sea. I especially love videos on abandoned towns and buildings. This video is one of the best I’ve seen about Slab City. Great job! I will definitely subscribe.
Now with the pleasantries out of the way, are you really NOT going to say anything about that massive fire? Really now!

I've been to slab city, but just to salvation mountain. The town closest to it was pretty desolate, but these folks look genuinely happy to be there. It was pretty empty when I visited, and it was September but hotter than hell. That fire gutted me and I pray that all survived it.

I stayed in the Slabs for a week, in the RV across from Salvation Mountain. It was awesome.

It's good that the residents keep salvation mountain up in memory of Leonard.
