@@TheSorrel No she doesn't actually , even less so when it was from a public source, only real protection as far as voice goes is for impersonations and commercial use, the video isn't impersonating Erica and the video isn't making money so commercial use isn't applied.
I get why the actual VA would be upset at her voice being used to say things she normally wouldn't, but I don't think her job would be at risk because of a shitpost (that uses an obviously fake AI voice) that'll be forgotten in less than a year. Also I don't really get the whole "stealing her voice" argument because 90% of posts and parodies like this on the internet would be considered theft by that logic. The creator of original post didn't create the character Futaba or write the actual song so did he technically steal those too.
Every single use of AI contributes to the advancement of AI technology because engineers use that data to help them make further improvements to the AI. Even though it isn't truly sure to happen, it is still theoretically possible for AI to reach the point where it can generate a voice that is effectively the same as the voice actor's work. Even now, just because the video's an "obviously fake shitpost," doesn't mean the chances are 0% for her to be denied work because of this (because companies are stupid and have been stupid since recorded history). Therefore, her job IS at risk, no matter how small that risk is, and she should have every right to take the video down. And yes, the original maker of this DID steal the ability to use Futaba's character and Bo Burnham's song because they literally don't own the copyright to make this video with those properties, hell they also stole the video artwork too if they didn't draw that themselves. It's the same case for the "90% of posts" like this, but they aren't taken down or the creators aren't thrown in jail because the copywrite law is simply not enforced for the most part, either because people cant afford the effort or don't have a personal reason to take them down.
@@nedajness4433 I'm not really saying she shouldn't have a right to get the video taken down if she feels uncomfortable with the use of her voice, I just don't think this specific situation was serious enough to blow up like it did. Other people are bringing up the Streisand effect which honestly is accurate, if she ignored it or dealt with it privately like other voice actors do, nobody would've even known about it. I agree with the point about AI technology advancing to the point it's impossible to tell apart, and honestly I'm concerned about the day AI pisses off the wrong person, and it creates a bigger shitshow than this drama and starts a bunch of legal trouble. Copyright law is very confusing and ambiguous at times (probably intentionally), and because of corporations blurring the lines between fair use and infringement it can be hard to tell when someone has a legal right to parody content that copyright owned. It doesn't help that a lot of those same companies are more than willing to abuse the legal system to make an example out of someone. While I do respect her right to get the video taken down because it is her voice (even if I do disagree in this instance), one thing I've thought about is how much of a legal claim she would have over this. It's her voice, but it's also technically the voice of a character she plays in a videogame Atlus owns, who would probably have more of a legal claim over it than Erica does. Unless the AI took voice lines from her talking normally as Erica from interviews or something, then she is 100% entitled to a privacy complaint, imo. A similar example would probably be if someone used AI to photoshop a picture of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Even though it's technically a picture of Margot Robbie since it is her face, would it still be considered a picture of her, or of a character that Warner Bros. owns? Would it be both? I'm not too familiar with copyright and privacy laws, and it's fine if you disagree with my take here. This technology is still fairly recent, so there aren't any real laws against doing this that I know of. I'm sure that will change, however, if more actors, celebrities, and public figures start speaking up against stuff like this though.
@@insertnamehere1398 Ig, I can understand being worried about job security and all that if AI can potentially do exactly what you do for a living. My main issue with this drama is that people harassed her over something completely reasonable.
Weird how this specific cover was the one that people declared AI was a problem. Where were these Twitter people when people made deep fake voices of Calli sucking off a horse? I'm no AI bro and not on anyone's side, but I don't see much people mention it (tho apparently Calli took it well, but idk) and I don't want to hear the "she's a vtuber, she has to appeal to degens" excuse, as she works in a large corporation :/
One is a vtuber whose line of work revolves around entertaining people whereas the other is a voice actor whose entire line of work revolves around her ability to talk. One could just go back to laughing at AI generated her sucking off a horse while the other is basically out of work WHEN AI generated voices are perfected. Edit: oh yeah, I forgot, as you said, one has a multi million dollar company backing her up, whereas the other has jack kcid if tihs hits the fan. Her response is normal, the whole situation is dekcuf. There WILL come a time where AI generated voice was used to condemn an innocent man to jail. Maybe it HAS happened and we didn't know it.
You are exactly proving the other guy's point. Idc that it's different jobs, stuff like that can be still threatening to her job because the vtuber industry can nasty. At the end of the day AI can be dangerous when unchecked. Erica brought the most vocal attention to this, I can admit that.
Actually Hololive fans did get mad but because they were pretty quickly axed off Twitter because Hololive DMCAed them it was mostly finished. Because no one can technically "own" AI voices it means there's a big push for someone to actually do something.

I don't think it's a stupid controversy. I came here because of the drama and honestly just curiosity as to how it sounded, but I understand entirely why the VA was uncomfortable with it. We are entering an era where using people's voices to make them say things that they never said is being up for an ethical debate. I know that it seems harmless on the surface; using an AI to make a character from a video game sing a silly popular song, but please do think deeply of what precedents allowing this sets. Allowing people to manipulate other's voices in order for memes opens the door for allowing these methods for malice, especially once you start trying to decide where the line is for "memes" and where someone trying to actively take down another person for a variety of reasons. That is the point that a lot of people dislike these sorts of things (AI covers) over. Although, a lot of people would take issue with making a 15 year old character (real or not) sing a song of this nature, too.

I'm having more fun reading the comments than actually listening to the video 😅
This is Jessie singing about a new abominable Shinra project
its a bit of a crispy voice
why does Erica Lindbeck think she owns futaba?
it says futaba sings it and not erica lindbeck
Its her voice. I'm sure she owns her voice.
@@TheSorrel Legally speaking she doesn't ,as a voice isn't unique enough to have a general copyright, only for impersonations and commercial use
@@danver8433 The AI has been used on her voice samples. She does have a right to those.
@@TheSorrel These mfers literally trying to say that her voice isn't hers, Jesus Christ lol
Persona 5 really brought in some weird fans
There’s actually some legal jumbo jumbo that makes Theese harmful to her job
@@insertnamehere1398 Ig, I can understand being worried about job security and all that if AI can potentially do exactly what you do for a living. My main issue with this drama is that people harassed her over something completely reasonable.

Welcome to the Internet
The moral of the story
Weird how this specific cover was the one that people declared AI was a problem. Where were these Twitter people when people made deep fake voices of Calli sucking off a horse?
I'm no AI bro and not on anyone's side, but I don't see much people mention it (tho apparently Calli took it well, but idk) and I don't want to hear the "she's a vtuber, she has to appeal to degens" excuse, as she works in a large corporation :/
Like, it's way worse than a silly song if you ask me
That anime/vtuber double standard is exactly what Twitter users would say. "That's normal for your horny anime girl content" or something like that.
Streisand effect. Voice actress didn't like it. Pressured the creator to take it down. People uploaded it just to spite her. Now it's bigger than it ever would have been.
You copied a comment from a twitter post i assume? She did not pressure the creator, she simply wished that the content get taken down since she doesnt want her voice to be used that way. In short, dont be an ass.
@@YegoKroetenmorally? Maybe. Legally? Lol no way. AI parodies fall under fair use. She has no legal grounds to have the video taken down. The uploader did it to be polite but he could have kept it up if he really wanted.
@@powpowouchy5 Bullshit dude. You have to feed their voice to an AI that will keep their voice in the dataset for those companies to replicate and reuse. It's fucked up on so many levels. You 'fair use' people should seriously fucking read what fair use even is and go past what some youtuber told you once. It has 4 parts to it and 'feeding a VA's voice to an AI company to be replicated forever' wouldn't fall under it. You're tripping if you think it does. It's literally a page long, for god sakes, just read it for once. So many fucking wannabe lawyers whenever they want to steal something, fucking hell.
@@powpowouchy5 let me rephrase. She's in her moral and legal rights to REQUEST a take down. Also give it 5 years AI voice parodying will be made to require consent separately from regular parody law since it isn't transformative through creativity or writing, instead by using a voice you (imo should) have no right to without express actor consent.
@@powpowouchy5 Actually, it does not. It falls under fair use if YOU YOURSELF voice it. Using an AI to perfectly mimic someone else's voice means they have the legal right to sue the PANTS off of you.

Nothing can be deleted from the internet... Only slowed down, I don't understand why the VA didn't just let it go..

If Atlus can claim (not criminally but civilly which has a lower burden of proof) that a viral video with a character that looks like she sounds like "Futaba Sakura" causes loss to their IP or bottom line, I don't think "fair use" will help a creator making an AI song with her voice.
