It’s a mollusk like a snail or slug. They live in saltWATER, not in salt. Pure sodium burns their exoskeleton. They are sticking their exposed skin out of the hole to avoid the salt. They really can’t move to get away so that’s all they can do.
They are sensitive to the salt and want to escape it. These other dipshits who commented have no idea what they are talking about. It is easier to use a pump sprayer with salt water in it, and add extra salt. They will pop up with that as well. If you just pour ocean water on them they aren’t coming to the surface.
This would be like aliens arriving and seeding our planet with toxic salts. We all blast off into space to try to find another home, only to get harvested when we got into orbit.
