    My mom has a hoya carnosa that's at least 35 years old and it only flowered for the first time after 20 years! She never even thought of it as a flowering plant until one day, way back in the 90's, it surprised us all. I've had a cutting from that plant for about 5 years now and it just started growing its first little peduncles this past week, I'm SO EXCITED!!!

    • @AutomHatter
      @AutomHatter Před 4 lety +8

      My story is also similar! A friend of mine has a 13 year old Hoya that never flowered for her until it was 10 years old, and only produced a single peduncle. She gave me a couple cuttings off it shortly after, and within 2 years I had a nice full plant, and then also a single peduncle flowering! The next year (this year) it has given me over 50 flower clusters! Many re-flowering on the same peduncles.

    • @AutomHatter
      @AutomHatter Před 2 lety +6

      @@xyz-pg3zd Well, Mine gets really bright indirect light. It sits right next to an east facing window. If I am not careful I have scorched the leaved from letting it be in direct sun but it certainly loves as much light as you can possibly give it without the direct light hitting it much/at all. My friend had hers next to a north facing window so not nearly as bright and never any direct light. As for watering, I only water her half as often as all the rest of my plants. In winter I will only water her once every month or two. She takes a similar frequency of water as a snake plant if you have experience with those. Maybe just a little more water than a cactus. How I know it needs a drink is if I can bend the leaves a tiny bit. A healthy, well watered hoya will have firm, rigid leaves that almost feel like plastic. Hard to bend without feeling like you are going to snap a leaf in half. When she is thirsty I can feel the leaves are more pliable. A couple may even show just a slight wrinkling on the back. Definitely due for water then. I do not know what you mean by substrate. Hope all that helps!

    My mom has one that used to belong to my grandma. It still pushes flowers and new growth. It lives on top of her refrigerator 💚 Nice and warm there. East-facing window but lots of shade from trees just outside. I swear, it is the happiest plant. Loves that pasta making humid kitchen.

    Hi Nick, I just got my Hoya Krimson Queen, she has not been in my home for more than a couple of weeks and I just love this plant, she completes the Krimson Princess and now the Queen collection. I also have a Carnosa that is over 25 years old that my mother gave me a two leaf start that I just recently propagated 4 stems from the mother plant that were so long I cut it back and now both the mother plant and the new plant which I rooted up and then potted in soil are giving me so many new leaves. This Hoya never bloomed until after my mother passed away and then it bloomed a lot. I look forward to some of my Hoya someday blooming for me. Thanks so much Nick for this video I really love all of the tips for care and watering of Hoya. Take care and stay safe and healthy, XOXO, bye for now.

    Love this plant! I barely watered it in winter...maybe every 4-6 weeks even though it was hanging in a south facing window (but November - mid February is almost exclusively cloudy where I live). I think I’m a little too scared of overwatering plants. Of course it didn’t grow at all , but since I’ve started watering weekly it’s starting to take off.

    This was my first hoya. It hangs in an East window and is very happy there. It's growing very well but the leaves are a lot smaller than on your plant. I've only had it since the early fall, so we'll see what happens. I read somewhere online that hoyas love orchid fertilizer oh, so I bought some of the spray and I spray it on them about every other week. I will say that they have shown a lot more growth since I started doing this!

      @@reidrow I've had a Hoya Publicalix (can't spell) for about 8 years. When I repotted it 2 years ago, it stopped growing, just stayed alive. Maybe the larger pot was the problem. Thanks.

    Can you tell me the difference between pumas and perlite ?

    • @harrywatkins8194

      Perlite is essentially volcanic rock, is lighter with a larger surface area due to its composition and aerates the soil. It doesn't hold on to water in the same way vermiculite will. Agricultural grade Pumice has a smaller surface area, is heavier and retains even less water. It adds more drainage. Both will help avoid overwatering and poor soil structure; It depends on your conditions and your plant species as to which is ideal. I find pumice is amazing for small succulents as it weighs the pot down and helps stabilize it but for an aroid or plant that grows out of soil in the wild (like hoyas) I would opt for perlite every time. Hope this helps! X
