The difference here is that the DOD is looking to operate their own Starships... not just to book flights with SpaceX. It's not clear what they want to use them for, but I suspect they have some concerns about needing a clear distinction between civilian and military operations, and how to avoid the former becoming a target.
This has already been a hot topic in the context of SpaceX with the use of Starlink in Ukraine, and whether coopting a civilian network to guide attacks on the Russians is crossing a line. Note that the DOD is also looking to have SpaceX build a military-specific constellation... not because they don't trust Starlink, but because they want to avoid civilian infrastructure being considered a military target.

Since before we landed on the moon, there have been hundreds of military projects that were planned by various people, but almost all of those have been deemed either impossible because of weight or uneconomical. With starship, all of those projects are back on the table, and that includes orbital dropships, tungsten rod bunker busters, resupply missions for cut off troops, suborbital drone swarm deployment and many more, some classified some are not. What Space Force wants to do now, is to have their own fleet of starships that they will maintain and customize without needing to involve SpaceX staff and to keep it secret. This is very common thing to do where military purchases civilian technology but they are handling maintenance and upgrades by themselves, and that includes things like Air force one, which is a civilian boeing 747 but had a lot of modifications made and is being maintained by air force.

One thing about the launch complex seldom mentioned is that the whole OLM and tank farm are prototypes. They are using the same iterative process to determine what works, what needs to work better, and how to get a complex that can launch weekly or even daily.
The ground facilities are an order of magnitude more complex, more expensive and more important than getting to space.

I posted in few other places, it could be to remove red taping from other agencies if SpaceX is an "military contractor", and Starship is assigned as "national security issue". Despite popular view, Feds are not in Love with each other. And even there are procedures that has to be followed, because of law requirements. Military contractor status put this program in category of exempt from many of those redtaping.

I can see two possibilities, either the government wants to take control from SpaceX by using the pentagon or the pentagon sees a resource that they a use for in the future as a contractor. The second is more likely or perhaps somewhere in between. With them involved, we may see less resistance and delays. On a side note, when you list metric and SAE values place the text for it on the screen simultaneously instead of separate. As a technician, I am used to looking at the one that applies to what I am doing and the tooling I am using and ignoring the other, this is easier when both are there at the same time.

I wonder if the military has already done something to build a launch and landing site at a military facility? How likely could that be done without public knowledge? What SX has been doing so far is building a prototype facility that could be used in other locations. Of course, there are limitations at Boca Chica that are not as likely at other locations. Like the water table for one. Even if there is no launch capability, there could be a landing capability. I am convinced the two functions will be separated at some point in time. SX has the capability to easily move rockets around and there are many benefits to having launch and landings separated. I would think the military wants this rocket now not later. Somewhere out there they have built or intend to build a facility for this rocket. Felix will have to keep an eye on it.

@@WhataboutitI respect that you said this and feel that this should be the pinned comment. This is not a CZcams channel, but rather a business. And in business you don’t have the luxury of doing things with integrity or truthfully. You must always worry about your bottom line, and in this case your bottom line is trying to get as much traffic/ views as possible to generate revenue. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You choose to have this “Click Bait” thumbnail to drive traffic and others may choose to unsubscribe from the channel to get away from it. With that being said I ask this, Is driving new viewers to your channel with “Click Bait” thumbnails worth angering the loyal subscribers that put you in the position you are today? If so why?

    • @onegemini420

@@Whataboutit I'm not so sure about that. It was NOT clickbait headlines that brought me to your channel or had me subscribe and like your videos. It was exciting and accurate news headlines along with your reporting of facts that brought me to your channel and has kept me. I actually was watching Marcus House for updates until I came across your channel. Marcus House posts once a week, while WAI posts multiple times a week. Your videos always offered great insight filled with information. I found I no longer really watched Marcus House because WAI would have already reported on it. So you already were doing something better than another channel. Remember though there are always other sources. Because I watch a lot of these spacer updates, I do get other channels that report many of the things you do. Guess what, I have stuck with WAI because I have not seen any clickbait or false information in the past. However, if you change your business model because you feel it drives traffic, then there are other channels that do not and earn their traffic and the loyalty of subscribers by maintaining integrity.
      -
Why not just a headline like 'The Pentagon is all in with SpaceX. Then you are not misleading people into thinking they are, and I quote, "taking it over". You see there is a far difference between them working with SpaceX as a PARTNER and LEASING ships while having their own launch facilities, than "taking over".
      -
The headline I suggest is encouraging, exciting, and optimistic. Your headline is a straight-up misrepresentation and disingenuous. You can have GREAT and EXCITING headlines, without resorting to lying. Also, before anyone says they were not lying. Is the Pentagon "taking SpaceX over"? No? Then the headline is a lie. Adding a ? at the end and then claiming "We are just asking the question" is a Tucker Carlson/Fox News gimmick.
      -
As I said such headlines have led me to UNSUBSCRIBING from a channel that generally provided good information. I can still check on the channel from time to time and watch their videos, but they LOST a subscriber. When I get clickbait and sensationalist headlines popping up in my notifications I get weary of it. So unsubscribe and no more clickbait headlines. Then I can choose to visit a channel without a subscription and still watch a video if I choose. Wouldn't you prefer I remain subscribed when I am watching your videos?
      -
Whoever your marketing person is does not consider that it is a trade-off. You say you do it to generate more views and subscribers, yet you do not seem to calculate that you also drive people away with such headlines. Trying to make it seem as if you do not use clickbait then you will not be able to keep people employed and would not be able to report this full-time is disingenuous. If you lose subscribers because of clickbait headlines, are you not doing the exact thing you are afraid of?

@@danrose3621 I am in the military. Yes they can cut red tape but it also introduces whole new levels of red tape. The civilian side of government would simply snap it's fingers and all funding for the program would dry up within a year. Private funding is what has gotten them so far and it will likely be the key to the program's success. We aren't in WW3, the military doesn't have the carte blanche to do what it wants in the name of progress like it did in the height of the cold war and if we were in a non nuclear WW3, (which is very very unlikely in that scenario). If it was fully taken over by a arm of the federal or state government then all private funding would be illegal and it would depend solely on tax payer dollars. Not an efficient way to get things done in a timely manner.

The military already has the process and procedures established.
