ALL THE CASTING OF THE BLACK ACTORS DID NOT BOTHER YOU??? PLEASE. I don't think you are being completely honest in your submission especially seeing as you couldn't get over all the changes in white characters to female . I think it's okay not to be okay with the race changes...Fine there are no black characters in the source material but to me, only death is a passable race change.
I think it's okay to be honest with opinions especially in this era of forced diversity which has quite frankly overstayed it's welcome.

    • @finpark7785
      @finpark7785 Před 2 lety

@TheGamingScrub I didn't particularly like the child actor who played Jeb, I also really didn't like the casting for Joanna Constantine or Despair. Which other Black actors do you think did a poor job? The one who played Lucienne? Do you think there were stellar performances w/ ALL of the white actors?
It seems as though you are fine with "race swapping" as long as the actor portraying the character does a stellar job.
So your issue should be with the choice of actor, and their ability to perform not the ethnicity.
“race" has zero to do with one's ability to memorize lines and perform as an actor..

The actors who you don't like, who you thought didn't do a great job, did so because of lack of talent, or poor direction, not because you couldn't wrap your head around the fact that they are no longer white, or no longer a male. I think you are projecting, my friend. The top performers in the series were clearly more seasoned than the others. I'm not loving Rose walkers character, but if you threw in a white actress who has literally not acted in anything other than this, like the actor they chose, you'd probably have a performance on a similar level, or maybe worst (or slightly better) depending on who you find.

Unless you’re messing with an Iconic look, that is pretty integral to a character, like Death's image, I do not see why you would have any issues. Even so, if you do, initially have an issue, a strong performance can often move you past that. Ethnicity should not matter unless it is quite literally relevant to the story, which in this case, it is not. I think this review was pretty honest, it’s interesting how you think he’s lying to sound “woke”, that mindset certainly reveals a lot more about you as an individual.

This show proves that sticking to the source material actually works. I'll admit the casting of death and Constantine did bother me but their acting easily won me over and I no longer had an issue with it after their respective episodes ended. Episodes 5 and 6 are easily my favourites.

Here's something that helped me look past some of the race/gender changes: Death and Lucifer are non human entities, and they can appear to us in any way. Just like how Morpheus looked black, asian, or catlike at different times. The humans, personally, as long as the changes don't change the story on a fundamental level, I don't mind it.

As someone who has been reading comics since the mid 80s, this was one of the BEST adaptation true to source material I have seen. I even liked the scene where Dream spoke to Nada, and his appearance changed to fit Nada's view of him. The Constantine thing was meh (I'll chalk that up to legal issues), but Lucifer was visually on point with how the character looked in issue 4. It'll be interesting how they handle the character for Season of Mists.

I don’t think the casting was Gaiman being “woke” The book itself it’s pretty “woke” I’m pretty sure in an interview or on Twitter he said that he casts who gave the best performance of that character. I really feel like the show is exactly who Gaiman wanted minus the DC issues. One could argue that comics have always been “woke” I also think that they maybe would have spent a little more time with storylines if they knew they were going to get more seasons. With Netflix track record and even now he says he doesn’t know if there will be a season 2.

They changed her story, so she wasn't even guilty of what happen to Astra(unlike John), because ritual was done by her stupid male friends, so why she even dreamed about it if it wasn't her fault? John was arrogant and made a lot of mistakes for which he or his friends must pay but Joanna is just perfect and fixed other people's mistakes. But I liked rest of the series even if sometimes was little boring.

I just started rereading Sandman after season 1. The Hobb Gadling story, in my opinion, was better fleshed out in the the show. In the novel, dream just continues to meet with Gadling every 100 years, including in 1989. Dream coming to realize that Hobb is indeed his friend and reuniting with him in the end was very sweet to watch. The book didn’t have that emotional depth during that issue.

Seriously who gives a fuck if Death is black? The actress was amazing in the role, who cares if Lucifer is a woman, she was great as lucifer . The diner/cafe episode is by far my favorite episode. Followed by the dead husband subplot with the pregnant dream baby. The Death episode was cool too. The every 100 year meetup episode for Hobs was interesting as well. The one thing that bothers me is why sandman walks such great distances and shows no sign of fatigue like the scene in hell. I thought Netflix’s The Sandman was a surprisingly good adaptation. I still prefer the source material, the Audiobook from Audible and “DC Showcase: Death”, but still it was good as a show and as an adaptation.
It was faithful for the most part (Considering the fact that Geiman was part of this), the cinematography was beautiful, the soundtrack was great, the special effects were pretty good (Some were really bad imo) and the majority of the actors did a nice job. Only big complaint is the camera format of the show. It looked too square for me. I don’t know how to explain this 😅
I’m kinda sad that this wasn’t a animated series instead tho. After watching that incredible Death animated short film (Which is amazing btw) made me imagine how the entire story would’ve looked like if it was animated. That would’ve been super cool.
Still, i’m glad that we got this and i can’t wait for season 2 to come out 😊

There's only one character casting that bothered me a bit, and that was Death, I think it was a missed opportunity to cast an Asian goth looking girl into the show, because that's actually how I imagine her when reading the comics. The actress they chose works just fine if you haven't read the comics though, the personality was kinda there.
Lucifer didn't bother me at all, in fact I don't think you can straight off assume Lucifer as a male, at least not from the comic issue that features Lucifer for the first time, only in later issues does Lucifer appear to be portrayed with a more masculine appearance.
The other DC characters I was already expecting them not to appear, getting rights for a character is always a pain, and unfortunately this issue will always affect comic adaptations.
Overall I was very pleased with this adaptation, it had a very entertaining and unusual structure for a Netflix show that actually worked very well and had me on the edge until the end.
The way they connected plot points in the show and how they portrayed it I actually think makes even more sense, or easier to follow than just reading the comics that would leave some things up to interpretation.
I know season 2 is in production, I do really hope Netflix doesn't screw this up, given the track history, the next season will still be great but they'll end up cancelling the show without giving it the opportunity to shine and keep other stuff they hype more for some reason even though it's garbage.

So I have not read the comic book, though I have known some of the stuff that happens. Personally loved the show apart for couple very small missteps. After watching your Sandman videos I have to say they did particularly well sticking to the source material while changing minor details that just would not translate well onto the screen. Imo the fact that they can't use the extended DC universe might be a blessing in disguise, but the John Constantine absence was definitely felt and in the future this might cause further trouble.
As far as the casting goes, since I did not know the original cast I was fine with it for the most part. It might just be Neil Gaiman helping them out, but most of the race/gender swaps were done well and did not hurt the characters. The only once I did not like on the face of it was Lucifer and the aforementioned Constantine. The issue with the swaps is that it was very clear at certain point, they were done just for brownie points and nothing else, which left a bitter taste in my mouth. I wasn't a big fan of Rose and Jed walker either, but I suspect that had nothing to do with their race, rather it was just the young actors were not that great and I am told this part of the comic is not the most entertaining either...

I understand not making her naked, but feel like she should have maybe been wearing dirty underwear and had stringy hair or something that made her feel like the horrible dumpsterfire she was in the comics. They did so good keeping the feel of everyone else but they made the embodiment of suffering into someones frumpy aunt.

the only reason I could see someone bothered with say, the casting of lucifer (i find it a little funny but strange) is that netflix already has a lucifer tv show, so the character and live action portrayal is already there, but to be fair, show lucifer strays very far from the original interpretation of the character. death feeels like an odd one personally. I'm bummed out that dream, and the other endless one's aren't supernaturally pale, but more than anything because I'm so attached to their comic book portrayals. BUT, when you think about the fact that these characters famously morph to fit the setting they inhabit anyway, so realistically it's not too much of an issue, (but I do miss the goth looks lolol).
Rose and Unity I'm not bothered by in the slightest I'm unsure if the show will utilize these racial and cultural swaps to any degree. Johanna Constantine feels more of an economic choice than anything else. Since dream meets with constantine's great grandmother, it would be an easy double casting situation . I'm a bit worried that the show has a chance to deviate from the book by making it more based on romance than horror. Dream is famously a romantic, but the show needs to capitilize on the fact that he is in many ways an imperfect agent of the ethereal, and like many deities he's inspired by, has a petulent, horrific side to himself. Haven't seen the show yet, but at least visually, it's looking very promising.

Casting, and other changes all worked for me. Small adjustments were required, but these happened almost effortlessly. If we think on Shakespearean plays over centuries, where experimental changes in tone or speech brought new qualities out as the audience and culture evolved outside the theater, it's not so different, here, except that these changes had the good fortune to be helmed by Gaiman himself, and I think are outgrowths of his interaction with his Sandman world with our own, over the years. My bet is these changes will age beautifully.

The biggest miss in this adaptation was not the casting (though I had similar cast issues with death) but for me, was the absolutely boring visual adaptation of hell. They spent so much of their budget recreating the diner but couldn’t have been bothered to bring Sam Keith’s vision of hell to light.
There’s no terror or misery in the live action adaptation of hell and that was my hell.
That’s not even counting casting mostly POCs as demons vs the variety we got in the comic. Absolutely boring.
Honestly, it was the visuals that was the biggest let down for me. Comics are collaborative. Sam Keith & Mike Dringenberg absolutely deserve as much credit as Neil Gaiman gets for the series and this show proves it. The art direction was so mid and lack any sense of style.
I’ll never forgive Neil for deciding against black contacts for dream. His eyes are supposed to be stars in a pool of black. I digress though lol the Hob Galding episode was the best episode for how accurate it was to the comic.

The only other acceptable casting for Lucifer Morningstar was 60's era David Bowie, so I don't mind Gwendoline Christie's death by snu-snu for all eternity.

As a massive fan of Sandman/Lucifer I was overall happy with show. Still in shock that it actually exists. If Netflix continues the series we have some incredible storylines to look forward to.
But the casting of Lucien and Death still bother me, regardless of their stellar performance in those roles. Especially Death. She should look the way we expect her to look. As she was always drawn. Pale skin to match her brother Morpheus. It’s as simple as that. I think it was an odd choice to change the look of such an iconic character.

I didn't really have a problem with the series or casting and enjoyed the first season very much. If I have any quibbles about the casting, it would only be that I enjoyed how most of the Endless looked very much alike, allowing them to make both Destruction and Delirium to appear as the almost literal redheaded stepchildren of the family. That was fun in the comics, and I'm a bit saddened that this won't be able to happen on the show, but otherwise no complaints. My biggest disappointment was the removal of the mad cackling laugh when Morpheus encounters the "Sandman" in Jed's dream. I'm guessing they thought it would be too mean to have Dream laugh at a child that way, even though he was actually laughing at all of humanity in the comic with Hector Hall in place of Jed. If I had any input into writing this scene, I would have had events in Jed's dream world happen exactly as they did on the show, but at the same time, there would have been a giant version of Dream in the wider dreaming, cackling wildly and maniacally, with a panning shot to the faces of all of the residents of the Dreaming that we'd encountered thus far, looking up at the strange sound, most probably wondering what it is and maybe a rare few smiling because they managed to guess. That would have been fun.

They could have and should have, in my opinion, casted Tom Ellis as Lucifer. Same continuity, same character, he’s met John Constantine in the arrow verse cross over when they went to earth 666. This is presumably the earth Lucifer likes to play around in while simultaneously being a multiversal being. Nevertheless, that Lucifer is very literally the same Lucifer that was based off of David Bowie from the comics and is owned by NETFLIX. It would’ve made sense seeing as how you literally pointed out that in the COMIC Lucifer was so popular he got his own COMIC. The man appearing in the SHOW who already had his own SHOW in the same multiverse would’ve made my limbs fly off my body. It also would’ve been chronologically accurate when considering when the Lucifer series took place, 2018 and beyond, as compared to when the comic took place, the 80’s and prior. Lucifer would not have had his character changing arc that we see in his TV series and it would’ve made sense for his personality to be the exact same as it was in the sandman comic. Would’ve been amazing

I like the adaptation, but one thing that was a little bit meh, or weak was the Johanna Constantine arc. But otherwise I was somehow delighted. I never minded some swaps in the cast, I welcomed it and it fitted the shows atmosphere. I liked Cain and Abel, Desire, Death and Rose Walker, Lucienne. Everybody was awesome. 🙂

I'm not familiar with the source material, I enjoyed but didn't love the show. I was not familiar with the characters so I only realized the casting changes later. Given how faithful the adaptation is,it would have been nice if they cast actors that looked like the original characters. The changes are rarely an improvement, the most memorable characters are the ones that are cast more faithfully. Luckier is on Netflix, if they cast that actor even though the portrayals are different it would have been cool.

I loved the comics, I liked the show. I have to be honest. They made the show woke and I have to wonder why. They didn’t just make male female and black white, but made white male characters, female with masculine characteristics, etc. It was way too much. The comic is very neutral and cosmic. Wish it stayed that way instead of being political. It’s a source worth respecting. I also think the Lucifer casting was a total mistake. Lucifer being revealed as a beautiful angel in hell was awesome to me in the comic. But in the show….a middle aged woman? Miss. Want to make it a woman? Fine, but make her jaw dropping, she is one of the first creations ever in this lore. They just missed the subtleties. It’s got potential, but they need to tighten things up.

I kept thinking every change would bug me... but then it won me over. I'm a mega fan and this show was one of my fav things ever. This is sorta my LOTR. The casting was so amazing (Even though so many of the changes could have been bad). Death being a black woman could have been terrible (Starfire from Titans was always a catch in my craw)... but it ended up being beyond brilliant. The woman who played Death literally (no joke) brought me to tears multiple times as I watched. She deserves an emmy for her portrayal of a beautiful and caring concept of death that is a gift and not a curse. Likewise, John Dee was possibly the best villain on screen ever... except maybe for old eye-teeth himself who was also great. I have NO complaints against this show. Constantine made more sense like this. This was better than the source for this media in every change. I kinda want a whole show with Coleman as Constantine.

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the actor who did play Lucifer in this series she was really good,
I just would of preferred Tom Ellis myself. I get why they didn’t want to use him though.
I strangely enough liked Lucienne the most throughout the show, which was weird for me cause I never really found him interesting in the comic.

I really liked the comic. That being said… even though they did a good job on being faithful to the comics… it just didn’t hit like the comic. It’s a hard read even in comic form, and I think whatever they did with it, it was going to be a hard translation to pull off. The actor did fine job, but I just had a hard time connecting with him. I really wish they would have left Constantine true to character also. They had a fine line to walk… either change it up and piss off comic fans, or stay true like they did and hope it translates well… but maybe not add anything new to the mythos
