The old man represents his father through most of the video. After his mother died his father was emotionally distant. He felt like his father watched him drown in depression, burn in anger and did nothing to help. When it came to it, his father did care, but he showed it too late. Cutting back to the first scene someone calls the old man Nate because he has mentioned before that one of his biggest fears is making the same mistakes with his own kids. So the old man represents both NF and his Dad.

Agreed. That's pretty rare in the current rap age.. only few rappers like NF, Eminem and dax, Logic keep the storytelling and wordplay vibe..
Nates creativity has always gotten me. Even on Paid My Dues all of the outfits and locations are previous videos or things described. Then the smile he draws at the end that says lost is something from December 2017 when he did the same thing on Instagram. When the song came out he tagged it. Dude dropped PMD in 2019. So he had the concepts at the very least two years ago. He’s really truly amazing. How things connect and stuff. So underrated. He is a genius in his own aspect for real. His creativity and emotion in his lyrics are amazing. And how he’s gone four albums with the last two going number one on Billboard (Search beat Chance the rapper out) and he has never used a single swear word. Not one. Not a single filler bar to make things rhyme. It’s insane when you think about the quality of music he manages to release.

It is. Many songs about parents. In the beginning of the song it even says Parents. Also, he talks about moving out of his dads house. Its his father. I hate to say it, but Shaq misinterpreted this entire song.
NCU Veteran I actually had always thought the old man was his Dad!! After Shaq said he thought it was Nate watching himself “drowning” I wasn’t so sure anymore.. so I had to do a little research & figure out which it was! The old man represents Nate’s future self reflecting back on his life! Also at the end the camera pans down to his arm and u see the tattoo REAL MUSIC that Nate has then u hear a woman come up behind him and say “Nathan?!” Sooooo I was wrong this whole time bc I really thought it was his Dad! The song is about his relationship with him and not wanting to disappoint him or let him down etc.. I watched the video like 10 more times after Shaq said that & I heard that lady at the end say his name 🤯 kinda similar to his song “Nate” where he is speaking to his younger self like of he could have went back he would let him know all the things he knows now.. both songs are great. So many artists take their pain and turn that into a MASTERPIECE & write these gems that we ALL can usually relate to. I hate that he had to go thru so much as a child but I’m sure he is thankful for everything bc has it not been for those tough times.. he probably wouldn’t be the same man that he is today. He is so special.. & genuinely a great human being! He has stuck to his faith when it comes to keeping his music clean.. everything he writes is something we can listen to with our kids!! & you know it’s gotta be hard & trying at times-always being pressured by someone to be someone he’s not.. just to “be at the top of his game”.. & be like all these other mainstream HipHop/Rap artists glorifying drugs, sex, infidelity, money, strippers & side chicks.. & mumble.. literally about nothing at all.. I don’t know about everyone else but if there is no meaning behind the lyrics..if I can’t even understand the damn words I can’t relate or feel any emotion to be able to connect to the song-therefore I don’t care to listen to it. I want to feel whatever that artist is singing about! I want to feel it in my soul & when NF sings/raps have goosebumps nearly 90% of his songs❤️Nate is REAL... he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but there but NOBODY can honestly say this man is NOT talented...it’s just not true. If you don’t like his music that’s ok... but don’t say he is talentless because you would be lying! 🙄 He deserves so much more credit than he gets!! His music heals🖤
