If I understand correctly, this was the first time that m*fr was aired on film. Also, bear in mind that $300 in '71 is equivalent to roughly $2200 today - more than a week's pay then. This is probably THE standout scene of the movie.
I miss the era... The races, sometimes for money, sometimes for status, people didn't get "bent" over talking shit - it was part of it, it didn't get personal, nobody threw down over the banter. A sharp verbal slice was expected, if you couldn't keep up with the dialog you had better have a damned fast car or chances were you hung out alone 'til you proved one or the other (best was both). When the shit talk and the race was over, it was laughing, joking about the race, or how the loser was coming back out next week to win, it was for the love of racing - most everything else was "filler"
and rarely were weapons brought along, unless you were working the "heavy" racers, ie, those in the drug business with no other place to put their money. of course, this was also when a 13 second car was good enough--you could build one with OEM parts from the junkyard. and "naws" was considered cheating.
It wasn't hilarious fifty years ago, back then that was dead serious, and let the other guy know that he had to either put up or shut up , cause if he backed down now he was done on the street .
Dennis Wilson cool as usual , he raced 2 different cobras at riverside and Lyons back in the day, also a split window vette. This was before he started lighting Ferraris on fire🤦🏻♂️
