I agree to a point being from flint and traveling down south every year. The Carolinas aren’t weak at all. But when you get back to Flint the mentality is just so much more cut throat and less opportunity and the scenery really messes with people’s head.

I moved to Durham from Cleveland, Ohio. The only thing bad about Durham was that the local thugs were on some corny mission to put their city "on the map" (in terms of crime and murder).
However, they're up against a very powerful conglomerate (called The Triangle: Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill) of elite academics and magnates who keep that area on the map for being one of the most educated and economically strong regions in the U.S..

In '00-05 there were street gangs moving in from other states and that caused a lot of problems. for a long time Durham had a rep as a dodge city for guys from the northeast and as a place where guys from other big cities could go and make $; natives were getting tired of out of towners coming from places like NYC and DC to set up shop. there were a few years were it was pretty violent but it's calmed down quite a bit. most of the troublemakers from that gen are dead or in jail now. to this day however, and on the low, Durham might be the dope capital of NC. think about it: an established middle class, a couple of major universities, a growing pop of young professionals w/ disposable income, all in a city right in the middle of the state, where I-85 and I-40 meet, with dozens of small towns in the surrounding counties = $ to be made. you probably heard of the opioid epidemic that started around '10 across the US; Durham was ahead of the curve, that's all i will say. Cartels are definitely in the area and that's a fact. RDU is a major metro with millions of people to supply so it makes sense for them to have a presence there. check news articles and read up on some of the busts over the years. I agree the city is a great place, all things considered. i have to say it's really come a long way the last 5-10 years especially, and is not nearly as dangerous as it was. props to city management and DPD. a lot of the bad areas have been gentrified or are in the process. it still can, and does, go down in Durham, it's just like anywhere else and there are places you have to watch yourself. drugs are still an issue in the city, not as much gang problems as there used to be, from what i hear. all in all, its been on the rise

While you fight over the "hood" . Its being gentrified right before your eyes, house by house, block by block. Almost every block is in East Dur. has 2 and 3 dumpsters out front - property flipping is rampant. Locals are missing out - to property investment groups cashing in. Take of advantage of Habitat for humanity and other ways to OWN property before its too late. OR start a business - demolition, rubbish removal, painting, home improvement and other related to construction. . It will be completed in the next 10 years.

pretty pricy condo's too... Durham has cleaned up it's act since I moved down here, but what's the deal on Horton Rd? Like a ghetto in the middle of a nice neighborhood? All of the stores in the area started closing earlier. Too many robberies. Shame. Nice old area and lots of new buildings coming in around there. Even new homes close by.

Champaign-Urbana,IL is like Raleigh-Durham: College town. Charlie you should go to C-U hoods, which has gotten bad since Cabrini Green was torn down in the 90's.
