- The Smelly Mystery is a game developed by GT Interactive/Big Tuna New Media and published in 1997. It is based on the book "Little Monster's Scratch and Sniff Mystery" by Mercer Mayer.
The game tells the story of how one night, Little Monster attended a sleepover with five of his friends. The next day, all of the smells in Monsterville got mixed up by a mysterious Evil Smell Switcher, whose identity could only belong to one of the monsters at the sleepover. Little Monster Private Eye and his companion Detective Kerploppus set out to hunt for clues to determine which of the suspects is the Evil Smell Switcher.
I played this so very long ago, it's been resting in my head and I've spent way too long looking for this. I forgot that it was smell that got switched and not taste like I thought. So glad to finally have a name to the vague memory I've had for so long.
Yeah, several times over the years I tried to find this game via google, but I must have been posting things involving taste because it never showed up till now
Somewhere in my mind, a memory of me playing this as a child has popped up. It's been so long.

Thank you so much for recording this! I played it a million times between the ages of 4 and 10. My family still gives me a hard time about it; they were so sick of this game, haha. My childhood came rushing back when I watched it. It was great to introduce my husband to a piece of my past.
I used to play this game all the time as a kid but I never noticed all the pop culture references this is crazy

Little Monster Private Eye is one of my favorite PC Games (including Nanosaur, Jump Start 2nd Grade, Thomas and Friends, Train Town, Trans-Con, Microsoft Train Simulator, Jungle Train, Reader Rabbit, Clue Finders, etc.) since I was a kid when I first played that back in Summer School.

I finally found this gem from the past
My only memory of this game is putting it in the disc drive incorrectly, followed by a bang and the CD exploding into many pieces in the family computer.
It took me many years to get over my fear of putting CDs in disc drives. I had to ask my family to do it for me for ages.
Boy, that sounds really terrible for you. Next time, ask your parents on how to put it in correctly.

Any tips on running this game on modern hardware? i set my pc up to run 16 bit games, even got the correct DLL required from online and it still won't launch. thanks....
I just run a Windows XP virtual machine to play the game. You can do it on almost any host operating system. (On my M1 MacBook Air, I use UTM to run a Windows XP VM for playing such old games, but if you have an Intel Mac you can use Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion or the open-source VirtualBox.)

There is an adaption extension. In the book, Little Laff is the Smell Switcher, and he and Little Monster were just playing a game until Little Laff heard his mother calling him to come home. In the pc version, The culprit varies. Little Laff will claim that the crime was just a joke. This video shows Errg is the smell switcher. The Smell Switcher varies each time you play, so it is either Little Laff, Ickky, Errg, Jerry Bombanat, or Yally, but never Little Monster.
