    One of the reasons that Queen has remained incredibly popular (apart from the music obviously!) is their genuine affection for their fans. I saw them around a dozen times and they were always totally professional and well rehearsed.

    Japan fans treated Queen "like they were the Beatles" when they arrived for their first tour there, overwhelming them with screaming fans and gifts. They embraced Queen long before the UK accepted them. I love the piano and bass in the first verse and the echo--ey chorus at the end. I look forward to your review of The News of the World, but Jazz is my favorite album.

    Simply put I love any song that gives me goosebumps and Teo Torriatte definitely does that. It’s so beautiful and classical. I love that they sing part of it in Japanese. It’s a song with no era and will be a wonderful song for any time. I suppose I should have just said it’s timeless. ✌🏼😂 TY Justin for your truthful reactions.

    Brian wrote a beautiful song for the Japanese fans, Freddie vocals are outstanding. We are so use to greatness from Queen, so when one song is ok it's still very good 😊. My favorite is so hard for me, the first 5 albums and the last with Freddie, Innuendo 😂.Thank you for reacting to the albums.

    I love how Queen honors their fans!! And we love Queen!! Japan actually has a designated National Queen Day .. Maybe I can convince the California powers that be to have a Freddie Mercury Day! 😂 I listened to this song a lot during the Covid shut-downs in California!! Queen saved many lives during that time! 👑🌟💫✨

    This is a great song, and Freddie sings it very well live as well. Favourite album sometimes depends on the mood. For me personally Queen I and Innuendo, plus Freddie Mercury's solo album Barcelona, but Queen II and Jazz can be just as good sometimes.

    The thing about Queen is, that they changed so much over the years, going through different genres in different Queen eras, that everyone has a different favorite record from a different Queen era, depending on which genres someone prefers:
    - people who are more into prog & metal prefer early Queen, like 'Queen II';
    - people who like the classic 70s rock go with 'Sheer Heart Attack', 'A Night at the Opera' or 'News of the World';
    - funk & R&B fans go with 'The Game' or even 'Hot Space', an album that their hardrock audience despises 🤣;
    - if you're into mainstream pop, then 'The Works' is probably your favorite;
    - other people prefer Queen's back-to-the-roots-with-a-modern-sound approach of the early 90s, so Innuendo is their album of choice.
    Pretty much every Queen album (and almost all Queen songs) has its fans but also its haters. 😁
    My personal favorite changes always, but the album that I heard the most over the years is Queen II.

    This is a really pretty song and a nice tribute to their Japanese fans who have stood strong with Queen since the very beginning. Queen + Adam Lambert will be touring Japan next month I believe only 5 shows, but all sold out as soon as tickets went on sale last year. Queen has always been a favorite band in Japan and still is today.

    As a massive fan of Queen since 1973, it's been an absolute pleasure to watch you discover their music, Justin and to think back to when I first heard it all. The 70s were such an exciting time. There were 3 of us at my school who were absolutely devoted to the band and it's all we talked about, doubtless boring everyone else to death. Thanks for the memories.

    My favourite late seventies album is Jazz. This one, and the next one, although both great albums are a bit conservative for my taste, but Jazz, with all its shortcomings, is wild and chaotic record that has some VERY good tunes on it.I look at it as a second Sheer heart attack !

  • @lyna4873

    Sheer Heart Attack (kind of their answer to the punk scene) was supposed to be on the Sheer Heart Attack album in 1974 but it wasn't finished in time so they ended up putting it on News of the World.

    I came to your channel for the first time attracted by this song, and when listening to you some things move me to comment, but I will go in parts
    1) "Teo torriate" I love it
    It has a sweetness in the verses
    the Japanese part is beautiful
    and the powerful ending is colossal
    I consider it in my Top5 of all Queen songs, along with
    "Somebody to love"
    "Fat bottomed girls"
    "Save me"
    and the duo
    "We will Rock You / "We are the champions"
    I had the opportunity to see Queen live when she came to my country Argentina in 1981 I believe (I was 23 years old there)
    2) you made a comment that Queen did parts of 3 songs singing outside of her native language, and it's true
    But here comes my other information
    There was a quartet contemporary to Queen, who recorded complete songs in 5 different languages
    and if I consider isolated phrases, then They sang in 7 languages (the vast majority only for phonetics)
    The group I'm talking about is ABBA
    and the 5 (7) languages are:
    Swedish (your native language)
    English German French Spanish
    and words/phrases in Italian and Latin
    3) Queen and ABBA coincided on the charts of their time, especially in the British, and it still happens today.
    I cite only two coincidences:
    Queen's "Bohemian Rapsody" was followed at #1 in the UK by ABBA's "Mamma Mia"
    "Greatest Hits" (1981) by Queen is the best-selling album in UK history, followed by "GOLD" (1992) by ABBA
    4( That's why I want to consult you and suggest discovering the ABBA catalog, the icons of Pop Music.
    They were successful in all British-speaking countries.
    They have more than 20 worldwide hits
    a film with them in 1977, a museum in Sweden since 2013,
    a musical 20 years on the bill and two musical films, both titled "Mamma Mia"
    and from May 2022, a concert performed by Avatares de ella, in London
    Their first great global success is turning 50: "Waterloo", the winner of Eurovision 1974
    (voted the best song in the history of the contest)
    Their biggest hit: "Dancing Queen"
    (in the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame)
    I hope I can see you enter the musical world of ABBA
    It would be ideal if you saw their winner performance live in Brighton UK 1974
    there ABBA rose to world fame
    I leave you a cordial greeting from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
    South América

    Thanks, Justin... I had these lyrics memorized as a 16-yr-old... and when a friend had a Japanese GF, who spoke little English, I wrote down the lyrics I remembered from this song, and she loved it! lol.. "The song is notable for having two verses sung in Japanese; it is one of four Queen songs in which an entire verse is sung in a language other than English. The song features a piano, a plastic piano, and a harmonium, all played by Brian May. It is the only point in the album in which Freddie Mercury does not play piano."..and then straight into "Tie Your Mother Down"... lol

    The middle gives me chills ever time. Great song. The chorus is 90% of the Japanese that I know. The first 5 albums are my favorite but there are good songs on every album. My #1 is Queen II but SHA comes very close. The variety of styles / genres on every Beatles album from Revolver on is the model for how I think albums should have 'surprises' and 'flow' - thus keeping your attention. These Queen albums do that.

    Sheer Heart Attack & The game could be their best albums but the Miracle album blew my mind when it dropped in 89 because it was such a strong return to old school Queen when most fans thought they were done by then. Hopefully if you make it that far in the Queen album catalog you’re in for a treat! And their last album innuendo with Freddie still alive was pretty damn solid as well! Here’s hoping you work your way all the way to the end man!! Simply an Amazing band!

    News of the World for me is the best whole-album rock listen most of the time, but the whole run from Opera to The Game was so good it always comes down to a tie-breaker of what are you in the mood for at the moment? 80s? The Game. The band having "fun doing what they do"? Jazz. Epic tracks? Opera. (I see the car song and Sweet Lady as equals that appear in the right places on Opera, in contrast with Justin's take of the car song as a minor demerit). Not quite up for the full listener assault of Opera? Races. Or when you can't decide.... The best all-rounder Queen album when you want a full album's dose of Queen doing Queen? News of the World.

  • @kvassrock
    @kvassrock Před 8 měsíci +2

    I think you might like the Roger Taylor track from News of The World. Sheer Heart Attack was actually kind of a punk effort. I like it! In general Roger Taylors tracks became more popular when he left the vocal duties to Freddie. I am sure a great vocalist kind of affects the melody lines and phrasing that can lift a song to a new level. Its probably a part of it.

    This album represents what I would call the final entry from Queen's "Classic Era" -- the period when they had major "proggy" influences and spent a lot of time in the studio doing richly layered vocal and guitar orchestrations. The rest of the catalog is still quite good, but the sound is different, with a lot more straight-ahead rock, including blues-rock and funk-rock. I'll be interested to hear your take on "News of the World" and "Jazz".

    Queen in the 70s to me is absolute perfection. From Queen I to The Game, these albums have not one single bad song on them, honestly. That changed with HOT SPACE tho. My favourite will always be Sheer Heart Attack. All other albums are somewhat tied at number 2. I could not decide because each album sounds so different from the other.
    But I can see why people love NEWS OF THE WORLD. Maybe it's because for the first time, they kinda stepped away from their classic sound doing much less overdubs. Punk was on the rise in 77 and while recording NOTW, the Sex Pistols were actually next door in the same studio. So Queen to Punk was like the number one enemy. And that's why Queen went for a much rawer Sound on the album and Taylor remembered that song called Sheer Heart Attack which was written for that album back in 74. You will understand why that track fits perfectly into 1977 when you hear it. You may want to turn down the volume for the "guitar solo" on that one. Just a little piece of advice. Thank me later ;)

    • @GeoffTrowbridge
      @GeoffTrowbridge Před 8 měsíci +2

      I'm just going to jump in with the unpopular opinion that "Hot Space" is actually a decent album -- maybe even better than "The Game". Yes, side A has a few songs with a disco groove, and it came out at a time when disco had become passé and was being mocked by the music establishment... but this was during Freddie's heavy clubbing phase and the music is actually quite good, if a bit dated.
      Side B of the album has some bangers, including "Put Out the Fire" and "Under Pressure".

    This is a great album for sure. So, in terms of what’s generally known as “best”, that’s A Night at the Opera. But Queen fans have many different favorites. If I’m comparing this album and ANATO, this has a lot of great stuff but other than Somebody to Love, ANATO has higher highs to me.
    In terms of my opinion with what’s the best - I think objectively A Night at the Opera is just slightly better than Sheer Heart Attack, but SHA is probably my favorite to listen to from beginning to end. Also, Queen II seems to be a fan favorite. Personally, News of the World is also a great album, but overall I’m not as big of a fan of Jazz. It has those songs you mentioned, but I wasn’t a huge fan of most of the non-singles. I rate The Game higher than Jazz, actually. Looking forward to News of the World

    Oops. I've already posted my "favorite album", but from reading the comments afterwards, I now realize I need to add some footnotes to my post... There are 3 epochs of Queen: (1) Queen, (2) Hot Space, (3) Queen 2.0... I just realized I've never really compared Queen to Queen 2.0, but off the top of my head... I think I still go with my original post, although maybe The Works or The Miracle could be 80s contenders vs The Game... but that would be the only difference - Queen 2.0 is still Queen, so it's great, but it's hard to beat the 1st epoch of Queen...

    You've heard their best records, in my view - the first four: Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and Night at The Opera. Americans seem to love News of the World for some reason - perhaps because it's more straight-forward rock n roll and doesn't have any of that vaudeville and music hall carry-on. Great thing about Queen though is that there's something for everyone. Some folks will tell you that Hot Space or The Miracle are their best (they'd be wrong haha). I would strongly urge a re-listen of Queen II. It's one that will grow on you, if you can look past its production values.

    This seems a good vid to throw in this comment - I know I mentioned this way way back, when I was I hoping to interest you in full Queen albums - that the musical diversity or their albums is huge... Of course, I know that you have already finished News, where I think the diversity is at it's peak (2 Rogers 2 Deacons), but that is what makes the album so compelling... I'm hoping you don't find it that they were "trying too hard" (but just in case you did - I'm sure there is no way that you would not consider Jazz "more casual" than News to repair "trying too hard" on News... did I mention that is not my opinion of News 😙

    Hey Justin - I can't remember if this came up or not, but now closing out Races - did you know the album covers for Opera/Races are the zodiac signs of the members? I'm too lazy to look it up now, but it's 2 Leo's and I'm not sure the other two - I wonder if their signs fit their (musical) personalities or not 🤔 Of course, I don't believe in astrology, but by sheer chance... I happen to be Taurus, and dang. Yea. I'm totally a Taurus... One person doesn't prove astrology... Anyway - it might be a fun vid to look up their signs (since they've used them on two album covers in a row), and decide if you think their signs match their musicianship.... Too bad April 1st is still 4 month away from now...

      Freddie drew that logo. He said he doesn’t believe in astrology. Two of them have the same sign .

      Roger and John are Leos represented by 2 lions, Freddie is Virgo represented by the 2 fairies and Brian is Cancer represented by the crab. I find it interesting that Freddie drew the crest to represent the four band members. How did he know they wouldn't break up? I don't know of any other band that had a logo that represented the band members because bands were always changing personnel! Sometimes I think Freddie could see the future. He DID say he would be a legend!

    A Night at the Opera is widely regarded as their magnum opus, but every album through The Game is varying degrees of greatness. Just depends what you’re into. More progressive Queen fans often cite Queen II. Harder rock Queen fans will often point to Sheer Heart Attack or News of the World. They’re most commercially successful album in the US is The Game, which is more of a pop leaning album (but still great).

    I think Sheer Heart attack (the album) to Jazz is an amazing run of albums. Opera might be there best, but Jazz is my favorite. Just always enjoyed it the most for some reason. This might be my least favorite album of the run, but I still like it a lot.

    My top 3 albums are Sheer Heart Attack,NOTW, Queen2.
    Honorable mention to Innuendo. Like the Beatles they had a perfect end to their last album.
    I don’t count Made in Heaven because I don’t want to.

    I gotta say of their first 5 albums picking which one is best is not much different than picking your favorite child. I own Night At The Opera and have since 77' and would have said hands down it's their best a couple months ago. I am not so sure now. Very few to skip over these 5. I pre listened to News Of The World twice recently. It's mostly not good in my opinion. If you do it I guess we'll see....

    In my opinion, this is a bad album. Queen was much better before and after this one. "Somebody To Love" is my favorite here, but even that's merely good, not great. Most of the songs are just forgettable. And, for the love of all that is holy, I get so fed up with those over-produced harmonies on every single track. Personally I think Queen found their second wave in the 80's.

    This may well be my least favourite most hated Queen song. It's so cloyingly sentimental and designed to push musical and emotional buttons it just feels horribly contrived. It might be sincere but it feels fake. My favourite Queen albums are II and A Night At the Opera. I think those were the two where they were most inventive and adventurous. I don't think they did very much of interest after Jazz, althought there were still some good tracks here and there. They just became a crowd pleasing money making machine and seemed to exemplify the worst excesses of greed in the 1980's.
