  • Trying to continue the momentum after a great hunt at one of our favorite spots the week prior, where we ended up shooting a 3 man. Couldn't have worked the ducks any better! Before heading north for the next hunt the guys ran into a few issues with the boat trailer that Gabe & Simms had to get worked out. On the way up we stopped at Simms brothers place for a quick hunt because there was some rain the night before but they had only been there 18 hours or so, we ended up only shooting one duck. Next stop the public playground, we’ve got cold weather coming, it’s snowing, and Simms has the hunch that we are going to shoot ‘em. On our way in, the block was hot, lots of hunters were hitting the rivers, scouting, etc. Met a few guys while we were out scouting that were repping Back Down South gear, ended up hunting a whole blind with them the next morning. Early the next day we noticed a lot of ducks flying high and west, so we picked up and moved to a different spot, man was it a hike through creeks & brush, decoy lines breaking from pulling them through the thorns. Once we finally got all settled and sat down, here comes that one drake dropping all the way down. Boom, got ‘em!! The consensus was “hey at least we didn’t get skunked”. As the rest of the Back Down South crew started to roll in, we went our separate ways and called it a day. We saw a lot of birds and knew they were here, it’s just a matter of finding them way back in the woods where no one else wants to go. Finally after searchin, searchin, searchin for 5-6 hours Simms found a wad of them in a small timber hole. One thing about public duck hunting, every last duck is earned. Lots of hard work, man power, 4 trucks, 3 boats out scouting to find that one gold mine! One takeaway here, check those holes you think they’d never be because it’s probably not getting hunted as much. Ended up having two great hunts here, there was a good amount of water and the hole was stacked full of ducks. This was where a previous lesson learned came into play, when you find that many ducks tucked in a small hole it’s probably best you don’t leave. Pack your pillow, sleeping bag and a cot, always be ready to stay put. It was one of those experiences you just can’t get at the hotel - sitting around the fire, lots of great conversation, and spending quality time with your buddies away from all the noise. That’s what it’s all about! The crew rolled in early bumping some music, ready to get after it. Right at the break of dawn, one group after another started dropping in the hole exactly like we’d planned. By 8 am, an hour or so after we started we had about 10 ducks, let a few get away that we shouldn’t have. Winds started to change, quick shuffle, we were right in the kitchen where we had some nice 10-15 yard shots. Ended up being a good hunt, could have done a few things differently but got a nice strap out of it, shot a four man but the consensus was we should have had more. There weren't many birds in the area so we decided to hunt the same hole the following day and were excited because it was blue bird, there was a good amount of water and we had the whole crew. When we pulled up the next morning we saw a boat and Simms went in and talked to the group and we ended up hunting with them, super nice guys. It was sunny, not cloudy like yesterday, cold, ice on the water, saw a few more birds, and ended up shooting another four man plus met a cool group of dudes. Like we always say, it ain't always about the killin’, it's about making memories. We are going to keep giving 'em hell through the last day of the season, water is looking good, weather is finally getting right, get ready for the final few episodes of the 2023-2024 duck season! We’ve still got a few surprises left for you, stay tuned for the 24.7 Hunt Back Down South collab!

Y’all are dedicated! I’m glad I’m not alone on the public land grind.
Also sleeping in the spot is 1000% valid and I’ve done it plenty. It’s completely public land. If you get beat to the hole, you don’t hunt it. Someone wanted it more🤷‍♂️

Man, love the commitment. Sleeping on the hole is serious; you are flat out all about em. I’ll admit, I ain’t that mad at ‘em. Way to go 👍

I 100% disagree with sleeping in the hole . I think it’s cheating . But yall seem to have the right attitude, hope yall stay on em. My opinion doesn’t matter anyway. Good luck dudes.
