That is so true when someone else is cleaning out their garage or cleaning out a room my friend had these box full of locomotives I automatically got them too
1) you need to do a full teardown and cleaning (I know, so super hard because scary electronics in an old model you know) 2) Stuff with slider pickups HATE lionel fastrack. 3) this thing will outlive you, your kids, your grand kids, AND your great great grandkids.
I almost exclusively run marx trains. Ifind they are some of the easiest to take apart and clean. Because they wheels are made of a kind of pot/white metal, they foul up real easy, which is the most likely cause of your sparking. A few minutes with a fiberglass pencil or a Dremel should have it going well again.
Also i had the Marx 2-4-2 that i got from Grandma in 1972; but when i was later evicted in 2016 the Landlord threw the trains in the dumpster.....sad 😢and my original 1966 MARX E7A+B with ROCK ISLAND and 4 cars and brown bay window caboose; and with wide 031 curves, for Christmas in the basement on the ping pong table set on the old pool table in the rec room... Sadly Dad broke it when he tried to fix the motor, but drilled into the large metal weight over the motor core winding wires. 👨 Dad messed up my MARX E7 A+b !!!!!
The track cleans up easily. The reason why it sparks so much is because of the very dirty wheels and oxidation. Clean up the wheels, the center pickup shoe, and give it oil, especially on the oil wick on the armature shaft, and some lubrication on the gears, and that Marx will run for many more years.
If you want hot glue to stick long term, or any glue, get a solvent to clean the surface if it's plastic, rub in a thin layer really well on both surfaces while hot, then put a regular dab on as normal. If any glue cracks, switch to something softer. The gummy dots that newspaper flyers and packages have are a type of hot glue and really stretchy. 100% Bathroom silicone caulk comes in a stretchy variety and should be easy to cut with a razor blade to remove.
My family is the same way. Whenever they find any old train stuff, it always comes my way. That's how I ended up with 2 whole HO scale collections, it is both a blessing and a curse. btw, scrubbing the rails with a piece of scotch brite should get rid of those burn marks.
If you use a dremel tool with a wire wheel on the wheels and power pick up, and put some oil on the axles and motor armature, it'll fly down the track and not leave those marks on your rails.
I once had a problem just like that but with ho scale it was a old bachmann set with a steam locomotive but after I opened it up I saw a broken wire and it ruined the track
Well Chris if it’s old and the wheels are dirty I bet have it serviced with maintenance and oiling before putting it on the track would be a way to run it without having any problems.
Love the old Marx engines! I got 3 1/2 of them: 1 tinplate electric, 1 die-cast electric that weighs a ton and 1 tinplate wind-up from the 30s, as well as a slightly cracked plastic shell. They spark more then you could dream, so I don't run them often, but when I do, oh boy are they awesome! Also, I could smell that video. It's a bit hard to describe, but the old Marx engines do have a special smell to them!
Hey bro, whenever you got an old train like that, test it on some test track, like make a test track loop, and then that way you don’t burn out the precious track on your layout
Fine grit sandpaper to clean the wheels, followed by cleaning fluid of your choice, clean out and lubricate the motor, that should sort out the burn marks and the smell, unsure what else you’d need to do since Marx locos are AC if I recall correctly, and all I know is DC Best thing about older trains is that they’re easy to take a part and service, built with longevity in mind
Marx locos are some of the toughest out there up until the 70s/80s when they switched to plastic body’s I have the same locomotive from the 50s/60s with a die cast body and it runs great it number is 666 without the one weird but same model
Definitely a case of ye Olde dirty motor. It's a chore to take it apart and clean it, but it won't lock up and spark again. Though if it's been through the ringer, and I have seen this with Marx trains, it may very well be irreparable, and just keep it on display. They were dime store trains for a reason.
I have a #1666 too, but I'm pretty sure mine is a Lionel. I think it was part of an O27 NKP set from the early 1970s, with a caboose, gondola, and flatcar, track and black square transformer.
I own one! It was my Grandpa's old train. I didn't know what tender it had, but I used a Penn Central sloped tender (IDK if it runs, I just keep it on display)
I know how to fix that burning issue ( something’s probably wrong with the motor) also you got lucky earlier Marx locomotives will not run on fastrack turnouts. (By the way I love how you have some post-war&pre-war locomotives)
I actually own this engine It runs alright and all, but it’s pretty cursed Mostly because it has Penn Central written on the tender Edit: forgot to mention that it has a slope back tender
I have that exact engine, and it quite literally sparks up my track and is missing many Parts (it came like this when I got it and was labeled as non runner.)
Ok, always clean and lube old trains before running on your layout. 666 is mark of beast, not 1666! Nice engine for free! Hopefully the marks clean up off the track.
I have no idea why Marx used that number. It’s so odd. Also, it’s best to use a test track on old trains first!! Fortunately, I would imagine a good cleaning will have your tracks back in shape.
The large cardboard nail files that your wife probably uses are perfect for sanding off the arc marks. It can remove pitting on all 3 rails at the same time. I have a test track that gets pitted from time to time like that. Those cardboard files come in different grits, and that makes them perfect for serious track cleaning.
The old smell of electricity......
I remember that from the mid 50's.......😁
an honest to goodness train wreck. Old Sparky does it again.
That is so true when someone else is cleaning out their garage or cleaning out a room my friend had these box full of locomotives I automatically got them too
Definitely, one of the good things about those old postwar/MPC era trains is that they are so easy to bring back to life after YEARS of hibernation.
1) you need to do a full teardown and cleaning (I know, so super hard because scary electronics in an old model you know) 2) Stuff with slider pickups HATE lionel fastrack. 3) this thing will outlive you, your kids, your grand kids, AND your great great grandkids.
Honestly this is why most of us have test track
any time my family find old train stuff, I automatically get them
Nice old history lives on
Wow. Thats really true when someone cleans out the garage
You find old o gauge trains from the 50s cool stuff btw
So many sparks you'd think it hit 88 mph
Bttf reference
Thx for the info... I always thought it was crappy old traction tires.
Yeah the beast is going to get you just wait and see !! Oh sorry it already has you !! Since your heart is 100 percent on those trains !!

Marx locomotive are awesome, me being 14yrs I love collecting old Marx sets powered and winder up trains.
That’s what those are my old Lionel track!
late 60's very early 70's. i have a few of them.
That's a bummer :(, but at least it works
I'm sorry for your loss

It can't possibly be legal for a landlord to destroy a tenant's property.
What does evicted mean
And that landlord never cared for your stuff he just threw it away he does it for money
Jeez everyone doesn’t care about things anymore
@@michaelramsey82also you have 18 days to take your stuff otherwise landlords can sell or dispose or even destory jt
Bright boy cleaning stone
Exactly. 👍
I would love for people to give me old trains love bringing them back to life

They run forever
"The only rare marx loco is one that doesnt run"
I love my old marx tin stuff. A little cleaning and lube and theyll run forever
You earned yourself a new subscriber!

Right, dirty contacts cause arcing and arcing melts contacts. Forcing electricity through a bad connection will always make for a bad time!
I love those old trains especially the lithograph art!
oof that thing sounds rough but all you need to do is open it up clean it up lubricate it and it will be good to go for another 50 years!.

I blame it on mini me...❤❤❤😊😊😊
Hornby Thomas and friends train model!!!
Where?
@@Opawesum he might buy one

Dang that was crunchy.
Surprised it didn’t time travel with all those sparks.
Watch out for those weld spots!

Something tells me that the restoration that train locomotive is going to get will be almost as intensive is the job of replacing those tracks
I have this very engine and it works
That’s awesome but next time make sure you got a test track for it.😂
Old train??? Lube & Oil ❤️
I got the same locomotive as you have, only that its in better condition and it’s part of a set named “The Big Work Train”
The mark of the beast....scorched your track.....
Definitely a case of ye Olde dirty motor. It's a chore to take it apart and clean it, but it won't lock up and spark again. One kid was running a trolley 🚎 ,it started smoking and then caught fire.
I have a #1666 too, but I'm pretty sure mine is a Lionel. I think it was part of an O27 NKP set from the early 1970s, with a caboose, gondola, and flatcar, track and black square transformer.
I've got one of those old 1666s too. The smell is probably from the smoke unit if I had to take a guess.
Not a joke, my fastback gutted my house, lost pets....
Spell check got m
Marx motors are unstoppable. They say the only rare Marx train is one that doesn't run.
I'll take it!!!
Wow!
nah that’s called realism
And that's why you should clean any old electric thing before testing.
Clean the tracks. Clean n lube the Marx throughly to restore connectivity. Should alleviate the sparking issue.
I own one! It was my Grandpa's old train. I didn't know what tender it had, but I used a Penn Central sloped tender (IDK if it runs, I just keep it on display)

FINALLY MARX
If you got it up to 88 mph, you were about to see some serious sh❤t
I actually own this engine
It runs alright and all, but it’s pretty cursed
Mostly because it has Penn Central written on the tender
Edit: forgot to mention that it has a slope back tender
Yessir
I have the set that MARX goes to. ❤
I have that exact engine, and it quite literally sparks up my track and is missing many Parts (it came like this when I got it and was labeled as non runner.)
I would have cleaned the wheels make sure the engine was moving and it was well lubricated first you were asking for problems
Engine was locked up. Should've taken it apart, used WD-40, then lubed it up. Would've worked better than new then
Ok, always clean and lube old trains before running on your layout. 666 is mark of beast, not 1666! Nice engine for free! Hopefully the marks clean up off the track.
Marx is mostly run on 12-14 volt not 16-18,know this from testing myself and read some info on marx
Don’t know what u expected with the number 1666
Marx trains are known to be very reliable. They say the only rare Marx is one that doesn't run.
I have the exact same engine in my collection, except the headlight didn't work when I got it
The mark o the beast is '666' engine don't have the same number! 😮
I have no idea why Marx used that number. It’s so odd. Also, it’s best to use a test track on old trains first!! Fortunately, I would imagine a good cleaning will have your tracks back in shape.
So funny
and that’s exactly why I don’t like vintage trains.
cause: wheel slips
You know better. Bench test and clean wheels and contacts before attempting to run.
That had to make the room smell bad and sorry about your tracks
Better slow it down before they start complaining again
Should have cleaned an lubed it first
I think it's best for the traint to be either a display piece or used for scrap on the set.
