  • Today we take you with us to the fairy pools: the Fairy Pools that seem to have just come out of a fantasy novel. As if fairies and elves could pop out of a bush at any moment.
Indeed, legend has it that an old chief of Clan MacLeod married a fairy princess.
This is why many of the places on the Isle of Skye are referred to with the epithet "fairy": fairy gren, fairy pool, fairy flag...
The Fairy Pools are also said to attract selkies.
According to what is said, these mythological creatures, who looked like seals during the day, once they arrived on the beach at the foot of Glen Brittle and removed their magical skin, transformed into splendid women at night, to bathe in the pools below the light of the moon.
The visit to the Fairy Pools takes a few hours, at least a couple.
Just calculate that, starting from Portree, the Fairy Pools are about 40 minutes away and, once parked, it takes about 20 minutes to reach the first waterfall on foot.
Depending on how many times you stop to take photos and admire each of the pools, it could take another 20 to 50 minutes. Or maybe even more, if you decide to spend more time exploring the various pools or going for a swim.
And then, obviously, consider that you need to make the journey backwards and return to the car park.
Our advice? Bring a packed lunch and take it easy.
It is possible to swim and dive in the freezing waters of the Fairy Pools.
The Glen Brittle “fairy pools” are located in the southernmost area of the Isle of Skye.
Unlike previous years, now there are no major parking problems.
In 2018 the local authority built a large car park, marked “Glumagan Na Sithichean”, with capacity for 100 cars.
The cost is 5 euros for cars, 8 euros for campers and 15 euros for minibuses.
