  • The finale, on the first day of Duxfords Battle of Britain Airshow 2018, featured 19 Supermarine Spitfires.
    While the Imperial War Museums Mk.I Spitfire, N3200, did a graceful aerobatic display, acting as the 'Joker' to keep the crowd entertained, the remaining 18 Spitfires joined together for a memorable and spectacular flypast.
    The fact that 19 Spitfires were in the sky together was very appropriate, as Duxford based 19 Squadron Royal Air Force was the first RAF Squadron to be equipped with Spitfires. The RAFs first Spitfire was delivered to 19 Squadron at RAF Duxford on 4th August 1938.
    The Supermarine Spitfires seen here are, in order of take off:-

    I was so thrilled on the day I first saw one Spitfire flying (1975 ?). On that day at Duxford, seeing so many flying together, all my dreams were exceeded. Watching this has brought back such a happy memory. Thank you.

      Even more now - Wikipedia lists 54 of which 30 are in the UK, but the UK civil register lists 32 and the BBMF has another 6 on the military register, so it could be as many as 62?

    My heart was racing while watching this - seeing them in the Vic formation! As you might guess from my name, I've been obsessed with this beautiful aircraft for so many years, since I saw my first at about four years old. 50 years later I'm still obsessed and living about two miles away from the Castle Bromwich Factory where so many were built, and Alex Henshaw, my hero, was chief test pilot. Truly wonderful video, many, many thanks! :)

    Someday I want to own a Spitfire! How wonderful it must have been for folks to see these fine, fine war planes flying. Sound of a Spitfire a beautiful sound in the world. When one thinks that the pilots who flew the Spitfires in WW2 were eighteen, nineteen, in their early 20's. And someday I sure hope that before I pass from this life (I am 70, gaaa!) that I will be able to visit GB and see the Spitfires fly!

If you can't get to GB there are Spitfires flying in many other countries including USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain, Holland, Norway, Belgium, Germany and many others. You are never to old.🙃👍

    Love these Warbirds. Just finished reading THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE. Britain fighting alone, fighting for her life. Stupid Goring thought the RAF was in shambles. Ha! Someday, someday I want to live in Britain and see these fine fighter planes myself. Folks, I'm an American and my dad fought in WWII. Worshiped Churchill. He said Britain stood alone, she stood alone. And I have lost count how many books I have on The Battle of Britain. Yep, I read them all.

    At around 0:37, we have a glimpse of a couple of Hurricanes. Let's not overlook the debt we owe to that aircraft and its pilots for their contribution during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire might be graceful and pretty, but the Hurricane was the real workhorse.

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 5 lety +2

      I agree. Both played their part in equal measure. The Hurricanes knocked down the German bombers while the Spitfires kept the German fighters at bay. I heard a story related at the show where a group of Hurricane and Spitfire veterans had a very sociable drink fuelled debate in a bar one night, whereby the Hurricane pilots did eventually agree that had it not been for the Spitfire we would probably have lost the Battle of Britain, primarily because the Hurricane would not by itself have been able to contend with the Bf109, although they would all probably now deny it? Here are the Hurricanes flying at the same show, with a Blenheim - czcams.com/video/4Ni3PdYHRa4/video.html

    • @grahamj9101
      @grahamj9101 Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for the link to the Hurricanes and the Blenheim. Any debate about the relative effectiveness and worth of the Hurricane and Spitfire, would, I hope, always be friendly and it could never reach a definitive conclusion. The Battle of Britain was won, but I won't be so presumptuous as to repeat Churchill's words here.

    Is Spitfire MH 434 not owned by the Old Flying Machine Company anymore? i notice in your list she's listed under Merlin Aviation LTD, and also, the Grace Spitfire, what about her?, it seems us here in New Zealand are a tad behind, lol.Fantastic video, thankyou for posting.

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 5 lety +1

      Thankyou, it's my pleasure. You are by no means a 'tad behind'. MH434 is listed on G-INFO (the CAA online register) as owned by Merlin Aviation Ltd, but it is still indeed operated by the Old Flying Machine Company - maybe a trading name and/or joint ownership or another link between the two? www.old-flying-machine-company.co.uk
      The Grace Spitfire is still in the hands of Caroline and Richard Grace via their company Air Leasing Ltd - ultimatewarbirdflights.com/flights/supermarine-spitfire-t-ix-ml407/

      If you look at my comments I've listed each type.
      Here's a link to another web site that discusses differences in spitfire marks - spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-mk-ix-xi-and-xvi-variants-much-varied.html
      and here is information regarding engine development that is very interesting - spitfiresociety.org/content-Merlin-engine,Spitfire
