Oh how I love 1987!! 15 year old me clinging to my Smash Hits and taping every episode of TOTP!! Had Johnny Hates Jazz, ABC, Madonna posters (well mostly print ads from Smash Hits and No.1 Magazine!) all over me room! What joy!

Probably my favourite year of the 80s. Although, I do love every year of that decade, lol. I started getting into bands like Def leppard, motley, bon Jovi and whitesnake in 87.
Definitely agree - my fave artists all peaked that year - MJ was bad , Prince was sign of the times and Madonna still riding high on true blue and who’s that girl tour is still my fave tour
Crockett's Theme..... proof that electronica most definitely CAN have soul! What a haunting, memorable and atmospheric track that defines the sound of that era beautifully.
Great edition of top of the pops with Jonny hates jazz and Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger and Madonna and Jan hammer and Gary Newman and the amazing ABC and the amazing song the night you meander love and rick Astley and jan hammer
The song that Mick Jagger did here was the first one broadcast on the US premiere of this show on CBS. The way that version worked is that they had American singer and actress Nia Peeples host from Los Angeles, while Gary Davies obviously did the parts from London. The show was broadcast on Friday nights at 11:30pm, but it only lasted about a year. It didn't help that they had to directly compete in that time slot with Johnny Carson, who was still pretty much the king of late night at the time.
1987 (35) long years ago, where has the time gone, liked the first two groups, didn’t like the Madonna track, after watching a doc of Stoke, Aitken, Waterman and their former PLW company, great to see their music with Rick Astly at the end, all in all, great performances with some artists no longer with us.
This reminds us of times when there were tunes! I was a 3rd year uni student in 1987. And while of course people had problems, life seemed so much simpler than now.
Rumour is that this edition of top of the pops had everybody cloned and that they are still stuck in 1987 in a recording studio dancing away completely unchanged or aged .............
I've had the ABC single for something like 12 years and this is the first time I have heard it. Wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised and personally, I think it deserved better than stalling at 31.
What kind of a war would we be in if you had to send for Johnny Hates Jazz to be on the frontline ? I mean if you're sending for Johnny Hates Jazz as a last resort ,you'd be as well waving the white flag and surrendering
@@robertgemmell1485 Ok, so what's your alternative interpretation of it? :) For many with recollections of Tebbit's "he got on you bike and looked for work" and indeed any awareness of the long-term Tory prizing of the Protestant Work Ethic, it is hard not to feel that Jagger's lyrics reflect this overtly...

Should bring something like this back. Used to love seeing all the groups perform. Loved the 80s best music.

It’s a wonderful instrumental track
Thank you for uploading this! I found myself standing next to Gary Davis!!
In this episode!? Lucky you and shows the production team must have liked you

Agreed great decade of music bring the 80s I was 13 miss those yrs 🤍🤍🤍
When music was nice to everyone, no insults, no bad words. 80´s was a good time to live. I miss it.
The music was great, and probably my favourite era, although I enjoy all types of popular music from 1950s onwards
That's not how I remember it.

Yeah, guys like Hammer or Jarre show that. Beautiful sound and very organic.
Jan Hammer…didn’t realise he looked just like our I.T support guy

Johnny Hates Jazz: Very similar, in parts, to Shalamar's "I Can Make You Feel Good".

I recorded the sound on my little tape recorder in front of the telly. Had to have that exclusive Madonna performance.
I used to do that a few years earlier to this episode as didn’t have a video recorder at this time
Not surprisingly Michael Jackson dominated the pop music scene. RIP MJ.
Rick Astley was 1987!
Madonna was on fine form singing causing a commotion live

Yes it was a surprise that it didn’t get higher but I guess they weren’t as popular by 87 and didn’t get promoted as much as it shouldn’t have been?
BBC four didn't show top of the pops on Thursday 24th September 1987 because Mike Smith refused to signed a contract

Jagger’s song here is awful Thatcherite propaganda. Some good tunes though: Jan Hammer, LL Cool J...
I think Mick would agree too. Question is, why'd he release such a shitty song?
The bloke is entitled to his opinion, why does it matter if you agree with it or not? I bet you’ve never criticized the likes of billy Bragg
