"Yup ... AND ... we've got you under constant surveillance. Yup we know all about your drug operation and it's only a matter of time before we take you down."
Hank: “a man that clean’s gotta be dirty.” This video exemplifies that. It’s the 1 big flaw in Gus’s persona. He did every single possible virtuous gesture , everytime. He never is cranky, never is absent minded, never an “off day” like normal good people. That level of virtue eventually gives off the vibes of “way too good to be true” for any street smart observer.
But there are people who are genuinely that fucking good. And also, it is plausible that Gus is virtue signalling just because he's a business man. Doesn't necessarily mean he's a criminal.
@@timangar9771 yes but you’re missing several variables in the scene. Hank is talking about a super rich businessman. So your point is not addressing me and Hank talking about how rare it is for someone to be 1) a millionaire owner on that level, AND 2) to be that virtuous. We’re not commenting on a monastery documentary, or a film about people who give up all their possessions to feed the hungry. This is a clip about a very rich connected layperson in a business setting, not about a monk or a humble layperson who has destroyed their ego. In most cases, super virtuous people don’t have enough craving for power to wanna rise to that level of power. And if someone is genuinely powerful in business, it tends to be a person who isnt that virtuous but wants to seem that way. That’s the point, I’m not saying that the entire globe has ‘no clean people.’ I’m saying ‘virtuous’ rich business people are mostly always virtue signalers. Out of the 7 or 8 billion humans, yes, there definitely are Mister Rogers types. But they tend not to be interested in money, or interested in fighting with immoral competitors in a cut throat way, which business requires at that level. So Hank’s heuristic is well justified. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” That’s the adage applied in the scene. If it seems too unlikely for a 14-restaurant owner to be virtuous at a level that most people never seek any power at, then it is unlikely that the owner is THAT virtuous. Of course even still you’re right, but in a very narrowly technical sense , “if it seems too good to be true, it still might be true.” Yes. There probably are millionaires who also possess virtue like Socrates or Confucius. But I would bet that it’s way more likely that 1) virtuous people aren’t wanting to skyrocket in business, and 2) if they HAVE skyrocketed then they’re just wanting to look virtuous as a cover. because if there’s a 0.000001% chance then that quote is also always true. If something is one out of a billion, then it’s not impossible. Therefore it’s possible. But this hides the rarity.
@@timangar9771 But the fact remains that Gus WAS a criminal and was indeed acting so kind to cover up his tracks, and Hank could read through almost perfectly
