A disappointing day at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - 13 09 22

  • I managed to obtain one of Northern Rail's £1 tickets from Carlisle to Ravenglass and fancied a day riding, walking and filming on La'al Ratty. Then, at the last minute, Northern cancelled the only train for which my ticket was valid (and - yes - the conductor on the later train on which I travelled did question my right to be on that train - can you believe?) so that it was already afternoon when I arrived at Ravenglass.
    I will leave the video to tell the rest of the story - a frustrating day but, hopefully, not entirely wasted.

    No....Tim, most certainly not a wasted day. You were able to get some beautiful clear video of the local area using your drone and showing us expats views of the Lake District from a different vantage point. Making me kinda homesick!!

      On a day with weather like this, this is one of the most beautiful places in Britain. However, on those days when whole mountain sides are running with rain water - - - !

    Brilliant thanks for sharing this with us ☺️ loved the music 💖🎶 as well suited the occasion ? scenery stunning 💐😍. In the area , love the Ratty line , been there a few times over the years and enjoyed every minute of this fantasic line ? Very impressed. Very best wishes to all the people who keeps this gem 💎 of a railway 🚂 running 💨🎽.

    Excellent film showing the Ratty from a different viewpoint. Glad that the railway is running full but sorry there are not more open coaches in the train and do we really still need (did we ever) the awful virus screens restricting the wonderful vistas ?

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  Před 2 lety

      The open coaches are great on a day like today - but, then - this IS the Lake District with some of the highest rainfall in the British Isles! As for the virus screens - I was at the Society's A.G.M. in July and was unable to get any date for a return to normal working. We'll just have to wait and see.

    One of these days I should do a round trip (from Penrith) including all the Cumbrian coast line. My latest train trip was unexpectedly to Edinburgh last Tuesday for obvious reasons.

      I simply hadn't anticipated the railway being chock-a-block after the holiday period and with all the kids back at school. On my most recent visit - also recorded on CZcams - I could have travelled without pre-booking on any train throughout the day - the trains which I actually filmed were more-or-less empty!

    Shame you could not get a ticket this time but it looks like you had a good day out anyway. I enjoyed the drone view, it was a good day for that with no mist over the hills. I see the government have chartered WCR to run some trains to London Even they are fed up of the poor performance of Avanti.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  Před 2 lety +1

      I've talked to a number of the drivers who agree that on a day like this the job is magical. However, in cold, wet, windy weather - and the Lake District gets a lot of that - the drivers and guards are desperately exposed.

  • @petermartin3069
    @petermartin3069 Před 2 lety

    If you travelled to Ravenglass on Northern but couldn't get a ticket for the R&ER why does the railways own publicity promote travel to the railway by Northern? Don't ask the R&ER - I've tried but they won't answer the question!

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  Před 2 lety

      - and I can't answer it either! I had assumed that with the kids back at school and the adults back at work, the holiday season is over and the railway would be quiet. Obviously I was wrong. It's the oldies crowding the trains - but I'm an oldie so I suppose I can't complain. There'll be another day.

    • @petermartin3069
      @petermartin3069 Před 2 lety

      @@schoolshorts HI Tim. What annoys me about the R&ER is that their publicity promotes through ticketing from Northern but there appears to be no guarantee of being able to travel on the railway on arrival at Ravenglass. They say people will be booked on the "next available train" but as happened to you, what if the railway is fully booked? The R&ER presumably receive a proportion of the ticket price from through tickets but won't say what refund, if any, people arriving but unable to travel will be given.

    A bit of a stupid title. Sounds like you are having a go at the Ratty.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  Před 2 lety

      I can't see anything in the film that criticises Ratty - I am a society member, pay my annual dues and when I visit, usually forgo my right to free travel. The only criticism anywhere is in the preliminary bumph and it relates to Northern Rail whose cancellations caused me to arrive at Ravenglass rather late in the day. Having planned to walk and film in upper Eskdale, I WAS disappointed by the way things panned out - I don't hold R&ER responsible for that. Perhaps you might like to suggest a more suitable title?

    • @griswald322
      @griswald322 Před 2 lety

      @@schoolshorts l was not suggesting you were having a go at the Ratty quite the opposite.
      It is just when you first see the headline it gives that impression
