  • Ten Network's '7 PM Project' bring Kitty Flannigan's views on the teaching of ethics to Aussie school children - resisted feverishly by religious beneficiaries.
"Ethics should not be offered as an alternative to the Bible" - Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen -- Circa 2010
"If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."
    - Jesus (Luke 14:26)
"I have wiped out many nations, devastating their fortress walls and towers. Their cities are now deserted; their streets are in silent ruin. There are no survivors to even tell what happened. I thought, 'Surely they will have reverence for me now! Surely they will listen to my warnings, so I won't need to strike again.' But no; however much I punish them, they continue their evil practices from dawn till dusk and dusk till dawn." So now the LORD says: "Be patient; the time is coming soon when I will stand up and accuse these evil nations. For it is my decision to gather together the kingdoms of the earth and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them. All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy. "On that day I will purify the lips of all people, so that everyone will be able to worship the LORD together. My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings."
    - God (Zephaniah 3:6-10 NLT)

I think Ethics should be apart of the curriculum for any school rather than an alternative for religious education.

they were compulsory at my primary school though. When a girl transferred in and she told them she was baha'i, their best compromise was to have her sit in the back of the room with her own books, while everyone else had to listen to the scripture teacher and do their worksheets.

How long ago was this and in what state because strangely I never remember scripture being in school at all. I went to school in Western Australia

It's ironic that I feel like saying "thank god for ethics classes". Now we can finally dump "Special" Religious Education ;)

Sorry, I didn't make the last bit very clear.
I'm saying that scripture could be done before school or after it for those kids who want it. I'm really saying I can't figure a full solution without any compromise.

As a teacher I don't think that scripture should be taught in schools. A lot of parents are also under the wrong assumption about scripture, so here are some facts.
    A) It is not taught by a qualified teacher but by a member of a church.
    B) Yor child does not have to attend such classes, by law the school should provide other supervised activities for children whose parents have elected them not to attend.
& C) They really push the Christian values onto students

AND WHATS WRONG WITH ChRISTIAN VALUES i learned most of the basic right from wrong from basic christian values we don't all believe in god i know but australia is a basic Christian country and the basic values of Christianity should be taught and practiced by all as it dont make you a believer in god but surely can help make you see decent principals of life and help us grow up with respect for our fellow man

@rotcafarg Yes that is a problem. The only idea that I can think of that doesn't make anyone waste time or miss out is to make people arrive earlier or leave later for scripture classes.

I went to a catholic school frankly ethics come with the scripture. As an Aussie, gotta say, considering we had a history of Anglicans & Catholics beat each other for walking on the wrong side of the street (decades ago) it's weird.
So long as they don't use scare tactics, a small colourin book should be used & some small basic 'treat em right' videos & a small 10min Q&A shuld be enuf 2 teach kids the basics of rel, enuf so they stop asking the wrong places & end up hating everyone everywhere.

Just waiting for my working with children check, with luck I wont have the delay I got with getting my Qld Blue Card, then I'll be training to instruct ethics at our local school. I'd prefer to have them learn a foreign language or something of use but if they a choice of scripture or sitting doing finger painting, I'll do ethics.

Ethics are caught not taught. If a parent lacks ethics their kids do too. Perhaps teaching them may help but not if the kids daily see daily examples of adults that are unethical at school, at home and in the street.

I'm more annoyed at the woman in this video. Ethics would be using the laws that either God gave or were written in scripture depending on what you believe. They don't really just teach scripture to tell you what's right in a situation.

Bit unfair to base your opinion of religion on roman catholicism, since the catholic church is completely wrong on the body and blood of Jesus, (and many other things) according to Scripture :)

  • @orangepicklesquink
    @orangepicklesquink Před 14 lety

This is just wrong! Very wrong. Ethics and Scripture are very different. Ethics is about doing the right thing in a situation. This is more of a humanist way of thinking. Scripture is about God. The topics are not similar.

The lady is abusing the scriptures. The parents should pray for the children as our Lord Jesus told to cry and pray for kids. Now the culture, educational system, and environment is slowly changing. We are blessed because of the prayerfull God fearing parents. Think about it. Let us arise and save our children in bibilical principles
