Thanks for this. I'm looking at buying my first proper level. Could anyone elaborate on why a spirit level might go out of accuracy in the first place? Does the vial get extra air in it or something? Or is it more of a physical fault, like the dial that holds the vial gets out of true by being dropped or something?

I was checking a rail that I mounted between two fence posts, and my level said it was level, but in stepping back and “eyeballing” it, I could see that it was not. So that must be the problem, that my second-hand level isn’t reading accurately. Time to buy a new one! Thanks for the help, Leah!

I see 4 lines on the vial that measures level. What purpose do the outer pair of lines serve?

I always wondered why they call it a “spirit” level. Is it haunted, or is the vial filled with liquor? 👻🍸🤔
