Secanim (Animal Rendering & Grinding Site) Urbex Explore - The Great Stink of Exeter

  • A look inside a once notorious site close to Exeter City Centre. Technically not an Abattoir as animals would already be deceased upon entering these premises. The rendering process would have used crushing, grinding and heat to convert animal carcasses into feed protein, bone meal & other products. Site closed in 2021 much to local residents relief after decades of complaints over smells and bulk transportations into the site through a residential area. Site still has a ridiculously horrific smell and the less that I touched here the better.

    I used to collect the waste from there, in a tanker, back in the late 90's. You think the smell is bad now, you should have been inside the place when it was running! I used to back through the airlock that you went in through, the roller door with the slash in it, then reverse through the second door to attach the pipe. Nasty stuff! One time, it frothed up, and blew out of a vent pipe, covering me from head to toe! I shut off the valves, and ran across the yard, stripping buck naked as I went. Straight into the shower, and get that filth off me, then realised I was bucko, with no clothes to put back on. Fortunately I was able to borrow some clean overalls to wear.

      there are still apparently dead pigs remains hanging from nets in a room, do you remember particularly well the processes that went on in there?

    Thanks for recording this video! Not many people seem know about this place.

    Great vid. We went in there just last night as demolition apparently begins today. It still reeks and is now totally delapidated, with broken glass, trashed industrial equipment littering the floor, and graffiti everywhere (some of which was very cool actually). Very interesting comparing our pictures and what we saw with your video.
    Thanks for uploading.

    Went past on the train and wondered about this place, I'm close by but it sounds too sketchy to visit now, that and the stench of death doesn't really appeal to me - that said I wondered what the stench was on Marsh Barton a few years back, put it down to the tanning and hyde place but actually I reckon it might of been this place causing the stank!

    It’s only been closed a couple of years, as I remember walking under the railway bridge in 2020 and seeing a lorry unloading. The smell used to drive people away so guess that posh restaurants like Rockfish would not have moved in had the stench still of been around. Always remember trying to eat my sarnies in belle isle park then getting a waft of it. The smell did travel up past burnt house lane so the local residents must of been please to see the back of it, since it would have devalued their property.
    Anyway these places have to exist unfortunately, but now I guess operations are a lot slicker and modern, we are seeing the old industrial side of Exeter disappear now.

      Too many know about it, as this was set on fire in the past few weeks 😮

  • @siecweb
    @siecweb Před 5 měsíci +1

    You were lucky to visit the site not damaged yet. Been there today and fire was set on by someone in the weeks after your exploration. Office building is burned down, same as the unique green sile outside of the factory. People who find out something is abandoned quickly start destroying it, why ?

    • @sandpit72
      @sandpit72  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Fire was a long time after my visit as I filmed on July 1st which was the day of the Teignmouth Air Show, as I had problems after getting into St Thomas Station due to overcrowding, fire was Jan & Feb 2024, the larger buildings are still in place, the smaller offices look all burned out now, been two fires so far, maybe same person.

    Went in the other day and it still reeks of death, the lab building is completely recked all the windows walls smashed up etc.. Apart from that not much has changed -though i was too creeped out to explore much of the inside buildings. I think it might be a site for depositing stolen bikes now as there are a bunch of bikes and wheels locked up next to the building closest to the gate which is fully intact/ locked up so wouldn't advise going in.

      Oh yeah I saw that they put up a sign declaring their squatters rights saying it’s their home now although it’s not stopping kids going in and breaking stuff literally on their caravans

      @@boastfull_iguana3077 I guess you're local, but I tend to review the site by sitting on the left side of the train out of Exeter. Fast forward 5 years and this site will all be waterside apartments
