The amount of truck tyres I see delaminated on the side of the road is shocking. You just need to take a quick look at any truck you see when in stationary traffic, the tyres are often brittle and have hairline cracks. It seems to be an epidemic of negligence from NZ Trucking companies

If they find they weren't checked the trucking company will be liable and the driver unfortunately put up for manslaughter due to negligence. It's serious stuff. I hope it's not the case and that he ran over something which can't be controlled. Then the spotlight will go back onto LTNZ especially with those silly wire barriers 🤦‍♂️

In the US where they have higher motorway speed limits for both cars and trucks they often have no medium barriers at all, just a wide medium strip.

Those 6 people were family to me, My dad was the driver of the white van, my cousin was in the passenger seat, and my other cousin was behind the chair of the driver Those three are the ones that died, The 21-year-old is my youngest cousin and was with them I didn't know there were six people in the van; I just thought it was my Dad and his three nephews, but then my mom said there were two others from the seasonal job. But one question to the truck driver: How did the tyre blow up?? Was it a rock? Was it something sharp that caused the tire to blow up?? But all I want to do right now is just see my dad, and I'm telling you that the truck driver better speak at his funeral because I don't think it would be fine for the truck driver to just stay quiet and not say anything. Also, our family wants to know what happened from someone who was at the scene, but I'm not mad or anything. I just wanted my dad to make it home safely, but he didn't. As a truck driver, I use all 3 lanes at my choosing, depending on what I see unfolding before me and the situation in my rear view mirrors. I use the centre lane mainly as I have two means of avoiding any catastrophe in front of me. Left or right. If tyre blow-outs on single axle steerers causes such a catastrophic loss of control all single axle steered trucks and buses must be banned from the roads until a tyre technology that deflates at a gradual controlled rate is developed. It may not have changed the outcome but those dangerous wire cheese cutters (ask a biker) have to go. If they are serious about it then concrete barriers like further in are a must. I’m rural BOP and we have these barriers everywhere and they are damaged weekly and take months to be repaired. They turn a minor mind wonder into a write off and spin them in front of following traffic.
They might work in SOME cases but are costing kiwis 10 times more in damages and repairs (roads and cars) and ide love to know the stats on lives they have saved. Out by me we have had NO road deaths in years and minor excursions…but now weekly there is a write off and a decent crash as cars are thrown back into traffic when a rumble strip would have gotten their attention.

tragic and herrendous for those seasonal workers killed and injured and condolences to their families and those terrible New Zealanders videoing the victims that is a problem in Australia too in Melbourne 4 Police officers had pulled over a driver to give him a ticket they were hit by a out of control truck all 4 officers were killed the driver of the car videoed the 4 officers as they were dieing and put it on the internet he a got a jail sentence the truck driver was drunk and on drugs and was jailed and the truck company were invaded by Police checking all their trucks log books etc which is usual with truck crashes huge fines are given if your records arent up to date 4 Samoan seasonal workers have also being killed in 2024 after work they drank alcohol then drove home and crashed into a tree with such force the van burst into flames all 4 were killed safety dividing fences are used in Australia too for years they refused to use them as it was a overseas thing but as the road toll increased they finally introduced them and they have saved lives of course a truck at normal speed would be hard to stop let alone if it was speeding if thats the case it would be unstoppable more so with a blown out tyre

I can never understand the necessity to close any road for that long either. Get the accident inspectors onsite. 1 -2 hrs. max. I feel it is done to display respect/outrage which is understandable but does not help anybody.

The only places they bother building proper barriers is to protect their precious speed cams to catch mum and dads driving 10km over the limit and making milions with it while the real road criminals know all these cameras.
