    Perfect video! Thanks so much for this. Particularly where you said "its always a good time to leave and look for something else" at 14:10
    I've been working for a smaller insurance company (also known as an Underwriting Agency where they write insurance policies on behalf of an insurer) in Perth for about 3 years now. Its getting a bit too boring for me so I'm always contemplating leaving where I currently work and looking for a position in one of the Big 4 insurance companies in Australia to step out of the duties I currently do and develop my skillset.
    Your video helped me see that reality much better!!!

    I think that the internal audit practice at big 4 firms is very cyclical and project based. For example, When a company fires their external auditor it’s normally a big deal as they had a multi year relationship with them (30+ years in some cases). Internal audit advisory, however, is only needed for certain circumstances and companies have a range of providers to choose from (even non public accounting firms). What I recommend, out of school, is to join the external IT audit or external financial audit background. The external audit, although has long hours, typically are very well staffed and have a lot of resources because these are the firms flagship clients, so there are more opportunities to learn.

I'm not graduating at record time which makes me worried that they wouldn't consider me. But, I was part of the social committee of my campus, this year I was an intern at an events company (internship had to be suspended due to Covid-19) and I am currently working at a Marketing Agency as a junior project manager (first started as an intern). When I apply at the big four, do I need to have studied for a post-grad or am I okay?

I also feel the fact that you are working as an intern is very beneficial, you just need to ensure that you actually mention that in your interview and play it up big. Good luck I’m sure you’ll kill it! Xx

  • @madmaxen
    @madmaxen Před 2 lety

    my take based on working in consulting for 7 years.
    pros; you get great exposure to many different companies / sectors. you learn and develop lots of skills including analysis and dealing with clients.
    cons; its a bit of a pyramid scheme, where you are told that if you work to death, sacrifice personal life, in some instances (tell the small lies to win bids), and put up with some of the toxic environment with backstabbing colleagues, favouritism (its run by partners, and the partners are like little kings and queens, and if they like you you rise if not, no chance). you can feel like a sellable resource, when the resourcing teams try and sell you for jobs (they act almost like pimps i felt just selling me to jobs sometimes without even asking me).
    for some its a great life, and it suits their personality and temperament. but i got tired of being sold to different clients as the 'expert' on something i knew little about, just because i was on the bench. i also got tired of being under pressure to deliver to unexpected deadlines that the partner had promised, working with lots of juniors who were from disparate backgrounds, emotional states, training and personal goals, to deliver something that was of high quality. sometimes there was no respect from the juniors to those below partners, as they did not see you as important in their career growth. so if you were in the middle between grad and partner, you sometimes got no respect from those above, nor from those below. but again its is very team dependant. if you are in a good team it can really be great. but most people did not want to kill themselves to be partner, and were looking to leave and join a firm in industry as a 'head of' type role.

    Hi Sanjna, really good content, a couple of questions.
    1) Is there a lot of toxic culture at the big 4, everyone trying to get ahead of their peers and get promoted and pushing u down?
    2) how bad are the hours actually? At my current role hours are super chill but I’m doing barely anything and not learning a lot, culture super good but doing nothing except copy paste documents
    3) do you get given meaningful work or mostly admin jobs and grunt work no one else wants to do at the big 4?
    Ultimately asking cuz got a grad offer from big 4, my current grad role at a big insurance firm in aus (been 4 months in it) has super chill hours so that might be a trade off but I’m barely learning anything atm and so bored cuz only doing admin tasks.
    My offer is for governance risk compliance & control advisory (think that’s what u did at big 4 too). I’ve asked current big 4 grads their experience from different teams, some are loving it and time of their life some aren’t and are tensed and stressed obviously depends on the team, but would u recommend taking big 4 for the exit opportunities and learning growth only trade off is if my team is toxic and super long hours, but exit opportunities down the road are super attractive too so I’m confused as I’m not learning a lot and bored at my current job even tho no pressure
    Also on a seperate note, do you know what risk remediation is and did you do a lot of work in it during your time??

    Hi Sanjna! I was wondering if you know how difficult it is to internally transfer to another line of service in the Big 4? I'm currently in tax and am thinking of switching to advisory!

    • @successbysanjna
      @successbysanjna  Před 4 lety +3

      I’ve heard it’s actually harder to transfer internally. I’ve seen a few people experience it, but each division is different so it depends. I suggest getting the process started as soon as you know you want to change :) good luck!

    • @swisstrader
      @swisstrader Před 4 lety +4

      Ive been in this business for a long time and best is to speak with some partners and managers in advisory and let them know of your interest, check their reaction and then if positive, speak with leadership on the audit side. My experience is that most of the Big 4 look out for their people and are very flexible about making a transfer as long as a) you have very solid performance ratings and b) you are young enough in your career.
