- Felling a huge Redwood tree in Taradale New Zealand16 January 2016
A local company was contracted to remove this 145 year old Redwood tree as it was rotting from the inside of the lower trunk and the very top.
The shallow roots were beginning to lose there hold and were moving in windy weather.
love to have a beer with this guy!not only does he have balls of steel but he is a incredible athlete.having done some tree cutting in the day I know how hard it is on the body.hope he is getting rich because he deserves it.world could use a lot more real men like this guy!
Thats 2 grown ass men! Climber and tree! Hats off to that guy!
Sweet job! Nicely done! That's a BAD BOY up in the tree!
Guy with the Chainsaw is highly skilled
Im a certified arborist with 5 seperate tree risk assessment courses and 15 years experience. I wasnt there to do a visual inspection but from what I could see in the video I would assume it was a medium risk tree primarily due to size and wind exposure. Majority of large trees are classified as medium risk because they have potential to fail in high winds due to wind exposure, this doesnt mean all medium risk trees are recommended for removal. That decision is up to the land owner with the assistance of their arborist. Im not upset it was cut down but Im not happy about it either, wrong tree for the location.
Im glad the job was done without accident and the ENTIRE crew deserves credit for the hard work and planning. I want to make a point that this crew wasnt as safe and well trained as they need to be and I would save my high compliments. Many serious safety risks, that are avoidable, were taken by the several members of the crew.
-Standing beneath a suspended load
-Extending hand, arm, and shoulders inside the hopper of the wood chipper. Lunging forward into the wood chipper with hand to force feed small debris!
-Side loading the crane
-Unbalanced load
-Hook attached to chain instead of shackle
-Directing the crane action with too much up force
-Climber was not in safe position while load was moving laterally
-Unsafe chainsaw use
Every one of these safety issues could have resulted in the death of one or more people on site. This crew wasnt trained properly or they were ignoring important safety guidelines. Professionalism and skill isnt judged simply on the job getting done rather it is determined on the job getting done right.
Dred This you got that right brosky.
Dred - Would topping or trimming some major upper branches have helped mitigate the "wind sail" effect and allowed this tree to stay in place?
finally, someone that actually knows what they're talking about
@@mstrdiver For a tree like this, you would only remove dead or dangerous limbs but NEVER top it or head the branches back. Selective thinning would be acceptable. If it has to be topped, it's time for it to come down (I agree that this tree presented hazards, but I am not fully in agreement that it needed to come down). In any case, whoever posted this video is a liar. The tree was perfectly healthy.
Sad to see such an enormous tree felled. But if it was unsafe then it is justified. I can just imagine the aroma coming from the wood chips would be awesome. Good to know it is to be milled and used to make something useful. All credits to you for an awesome video.
Crew Fantastic professional safe job in felling the tree!
Crain operator, arborist up the tree, and ground crew.
Superb job!
Hey for those complaining about one tree being removed so close to homes;
If you want to complain there are literally over ,,,,,,,100,000 trees being felled,,,,,, in the south waikato so that the land can support dairy cows..
Complaining about one seems a waste of time and I love trees.
bad ass dude
in a big ass tree
doing kick ass work
That thing was absolutely massive!!! And the way those branches where massive and they were draped over and off???? I would have pooped myself while cutting those upper pick’s!!!! I’d have been suspecting them to swing down and wack me!!!!
People must have been bummed as fuck to lose that tree from their neighborhood.
Very great calculated picks. All round amazing job man!
---------------- i like the Husky XP saws for that Large wood - and use the small Stihl
saws for trimming . Great work performed here !!! thanks
Should have left it, One fantastic tree
yeah, that way when it fell and killed someone they could just say, Mick said we shouldn't cut it despite it being diseased, rotting and the roots pulling
Sequoiadendron and Sequoia sempervirens are famous and highly prized for their resistance to decay. Also, that particular individual tree clearly wasn't rotten. Householders just wanted it gone, presumably, with "hazard" being the check box that needed to be filled to get the permit. Shame.
Urban forests are being decimated throughout the world, because of whimsical reasons. Cars kill more people than trees, but nobody is limiting cars. It is my view that local Government must manage Urban Forests both Municipal and privately owned, based on a Tree Policy, and a Management Plan. That tree is irreplaceable.
Take a BIG hole to replant that tree!!
the lumber will go to good use, and in that sense, saved 50 small trees. You guys are just being sentimental.
It's why every one wants to save the seals, but no one cares about cows. grow up. We already wrecked the earth anyways.
Thank you for the rational analysis.
johnslaymaker That tree is a"Sequoia Gigantia". Grows inland in Ca.
The wood is worthless for construction. Very brittle.
The guy knows his stuff for sure! Good one.....
That crane driver is amazing
That tree climber is an absolute gun. Notice not even the mailbox was damaged.
These guys, climber and crane op are nothing but professionals.
Sad to see such a beautiful tree taken down, but thats up to the council or house owner.
Those chipper fellas need to learn what a push pole is!
Too bad, it sure was an impressive tree. Hats off to the crew but especially the cutter in the canopy. I could never do that.
AWESOME ! Well done...cheers mate
that tree wasn't rotten.
yeah massive arb liars, they ,make me sick and I'm an arb
Of course not.
All trees have shallow roots.
It was a redwood. I didn't see specifically which cuts you were referring to, but if you remove an entire limb it has to be a flush cut; flush to the trunk. I didn't watch 100% of the video, but from what I did see it was a healthy tree. Of course there was always a chance of a large limb snapping, but the whole tree itself was quite healthy from what I could see.
The tree was very healthy.
Fantastic! Get proper adrenalin rush from these sorts of jobs! And good to see a pro at work! See too many amateurs who clearly think 'how hard can it be'!! And unfortunately they only realise when they're lying in 'A&E' with a few less limbs than they started with that morning!! One thing I will just pick up on, and this is certainly not criticism of how the job was done! When chaining up the section to be cut, it would have been better to have the chains opposite rather than both on the same side. This would have made the lift vertical, therefore greatly reducing the chances of pinching the bar in the cut! But more importantly 'STIHL T-shirt' when cutting with a 'Husky'!!! How very dare you!!!! lol!!
Ken you did a great job.
Thank you very much, your comments very much appreciated.
Trees give us energy and heal our bodies
That tree looked perfectly healthy to me. Redwoods don't rot. Someone didn't want it there anymore. Or maybe it was worth more as timber. Towards the end someone comments on how beautiful the timber is.
im assuming it had something to do with the root system. a tree of that size would have a very expansive root structure which may have been damaging the house, sidewalk, road or other houses.
We do the same job. Nice work.
That guy with the chainsaw has balls of steel - crazy dangerous job.
Interesting video - thank you!
Why would they cut that down.?Thats a beautiful tree.
Because it's OLD and starting to Rot and will destroy the House if it comes down!
phenomenal job till the very end, then... grunts almost begging to ride that chipper reaching in, and the cowboy walking with gaffs?
interesting giant sequoia tree or "sequoiadendron giganteum" . Nice work !
+PaddyPatrone Giganteum the largest trees in the world native to the Western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains,California USA. Same species as the trees found in Sequoia National Park & different from Sequoia Semperviren, the tallest trees, native to the coastal Northern California USA like though found in Redwood National Park.
Balls of Steel!!!
So sad to see.. Cut down beautiful tree.. lots of memories inside him.. 😢
thats the biggest tree i ever seen in my life ! awesome
The White people Pakhea in Maori are also alien to New Zealand.
The all or nothing tree management is bull. For instance Johannesburg, South Africa has 10 Million plus trees in streets and Parks, 90% exotic, so do we remove them, and make it grassland savannah, as it was before gold was discovered in the 1870's?
I take it you have not travelled a lot then.
Sequoia for sure. Bout the only way to save one like that out. They are super brittle. Not too bad. Pretty benign operation really. It still takes balls to get up in there. But yeah that tree was planted by man, so instead of hating on the guy doing his job, you might get outside and plant some trees. Snoogenz
Sad to see such a magnificent tree felled, but the need to keep trees away from houses is amply demonstrated most years in California, Australia, Greece, New Zealand, .... need one go on?
That GUY is The Best!!!!!!!!!
Trees, with trunks that are rotting from the inside-out, are dangerous. Good decision to level it.
looks like a privately owned tree. seems the owner can do what the hell he/she wants with it.
Couldnt help but notice lower trunk didnt look rotten at all!
george flutey ... I was going to praise them for doing the right thing in cutting down the rotted tree. I see no rot either. Now I think it was done solely to profit from the valuable lumber. What a shame.
I went back and looked at those cuts you were referring to. Sorry, but you're wrong. When removing an entire limb from this type of tree it must be flush cut to the trunk. Those were relatively big cuts, so it would take several years to close up. There was nothing unhealthy about that tree. Once again, those limbs could easily (and probably had) snap off without warning even if healthy, which was probably why it was removed.
@big pompano thats right. We used to use it for decking and wall plates
WOW!!! That's a LOT of Good Lumber Hanging there!
a real tree hugger, thums up guy
Some great looking sawlogs there; im thinking tables and benchtops. I noticed a couple of flat feet treadly by toward the end; maybe a greenie snitch in the area to sniff out..
how much was the removal?
145 years of shallow roots and rot to be seen nowhere... just wanted it gone... just be honest about it
You are correct Sir. Not a speck of rot. When the last cut swings away you can see only sound wood at the butt. Likewise, there is no sign of discolored foliage at the top showing disease.
That was a healthy tree. The only illness I saw, was the mental illness of the folks working the chipper. Leaning into it and pushing??? The over stuff feeding it just need to give way and you get chipped human.
did anyone think it was homeowner that 'may' want it gone
The redwood tree family is native to the Pacific Region including New Zealand. The planning and skill used in this takedown was amazing. An unbalanced takedown is just as hazardous as a gale.
The climate is far more dynamic than AGW proponents would want you think. Know events with glaciers provide proof. Trees overrun be a glacier ~1000 years ago were under ice whose cores, the scientists said, were a lot older. An incident with an exact date and time was uncovered, but the ice supposedly accumulated over a period of ~500 years, but only 50 had passed.
Redwoods are native to California and Oregon only.
This is so sad... it didn't look like it was rotting... but if it was gonna fall, there's no helping it
People who build close to trees and then, suddenly want the tree gone..., Great lumber skills by the man up the tree, though.
Damn that's some big wood!
I wonder how many birds called that home?
243.5 Birds & 1,000,000 Redwoodwood Bugs!
Nice job man!
Was there any particular reason the tree was cut down I mean the tree was on private property and the owner can do as he pleases I was just wondering why it was brought down.
That thing could come down and kill everybody within 3 houses of there. That's why. How about we recognize the stud of all studs working his ass off.
thats a sequoia, the wood is useless, what a job nice video, that thing is huge
yet in your other comment you say the wood is great for decks. makes sense
A big blade on that beasty saw!!!!! Geees
That's a bar!
Putting all the "tree hugging" shit comments aside and taking consideration of the skill involved in removing the tree it is pretty evident that the tree was healthy and sound. Arboriculture technique probably could have been used to retain it. The removal was probably based more on someone buying a house and then shitting themselves when it was windy than anything based on science. Not to say that who ever planted the tree in a small suburban yard was probably misguided.
Definitely major skill to remove this tree. I do believe that the tree was there before the house. So, nobody planted it in a small suburban yard.
brillant video Thankyou
Was the crane operator trying to knock the guy off the tree or was there no way to control the swing of the cut piece?
No shit! WTH? @ 37:44
You can see they are enjoying themselves
The Voodoos it's fun as fuck
Ron Swanson
Sure if you have been born with a pair of wings
PMSL, hes got a Stihl singlet on but using an husky saw!
Husky mix good big saw Stihl makes good top saws
People saying the tree wasn't rotten....you see all those "eyes" where there was old branches? I don't know of they were cut or broken naturally but the rot was probably starting in the top of the tree which as you can imagine I said inherently dangerous you see how big some of those chunks we're? Imagine that falling on you while you sleep. A good sized branch from that tree will go straight into your house
Nice job!
Congratulations on a safe job done very professionally! By the way, it is a Sequoia, not a redwood. Confusing, I know. Both are from California and both are called by the same name far too often.
They're both considered redwoods. Sequoiadendron giganteum: Giant redwood. Sequoia sempervirens: Coastal redwood.
what do you guys mean with flush cuts? i have a sequoia as well, still a young tree and i want to prune the lower limbs, so it becomes a nice trunk. how and at what time of the year i have to cut the branches?
did he have to changes saws or did he use the same one until he was done?
very rewarding removing a big tree and the money is like being a doctor
Around where I live the largest trees are protected by a cost and coverage of tree inches per square foot of one's property. Unless it's deemed as diseased or dead, a homeowner has to pay recompense to the city for new developments. Its a great tree, sad to see it go but it is what it is. Lasted almost 150 years!
I wonder how much the ground surface elevation will settle down towards? I guess it would be minimal outside the main root plate
It is a redwood. They never die; several new shoots grow from the stump.
i didnt see any rot at all...prob had it removed for a patio or a pool or birds roosting in it and crapping all over..tree should have been left alone
Nice work
perfection well done chaps
145 years....so sad😢
that's not really that old just be gladthey aren't the retarded assholes who cut down the thousands of years old oldgrowth in California.
how much did the tree sell for?
Stihl shirt, Husky chainsaw
now thats a tree
That was a healthy tree. But its too close to the house? Is that the real reason?
What impressed me was I didn't see him sharpen that chain 1 time lol
horseshoes and hand grenades ... exactly
Doesn’t he get the itch with all the sawdust and chips in his damn singlet???
That dude is a pro.. Then his offsider brings a 2 pound hammer for his wedges...
That saw is fuckin rippn
So where's the Rot?
not much rot to see..
That's because you can't see it! Most of it is INSIDE!! DUMMY!
someone knows how to sharpen a saw chain.
nerve wracking job for that crane operator.
Cost of a Job like this Crane, Mulcher, Arborists etc.
15K US $
Looked a happy tree?
145 yrs old? probably 1450yrs old
Don’t be an idiot it’s only 70 years old at most
The death of a mighty tree - sad.
i hope they used the wood, it's great for decks
probably used it for fire -wood...its freezing down there
lol the size of the branches are the size of trees around here
Why would you cut that tree down. Cool job but they should have left it.
A96B6 read the description buddy that will answer your question.
Got a STIHL shirt on, rocking a Husky.
Redwood trees aren't native to New Zealand. It had to have been brought over from the west coast and planted. I wonder how many other places these magnificent trees can live.
seems a shame to cut it down. I understand the fears of it falling. Standing all by itself like it is would also expose it more to wind. Still, it seems a shame, but it is what it is.
Does New Zealand have any laws concerning non-native trees like this redwood?
well i dont think so cause theres a forest of 250 foot tall redwoods in new zeland that has native ferns and endangered birds in new zeland that love the redwoods.
What size crane is that?
Instead of bashing people doing their job. Hate on the people who hired them to cut it down!
คุณเก่งมากๆเลยค่ะ
why would you do that?
How much?
how tall was that tree?
theirs a dick in the crowd on all videos.they just need to go play in traffic.
What was the name of the company that done the job I need some trees felling
Give Hawkes Bay Stump Grinding a call, they will give you the Arborists contact details.
+madpetrolhead thanks

-------------------------------------- so many Trees - so little time !!! --------------------------------------------
That's absolutely HILARIOUS lol
Tree grows for hundred of years, then a disease, on Earth called the people, and the tree falls.
