  • Felling a huge Redwood tree in Taradale New Zealand16 January 2016
A local company was contracted to remove this 145 year old Redwood tree as it was rotting from the inside of the lower trunk and the very top.
The shallow roots were beginning to lose there hold and were moving in windy weather.

Im a certified arborist with 5 seperate tree risk assessment courses and 15 years experience. I wasnt there to do a visual inspection but from what I could see in the video I would assume it was a medium risk tree primarily due to size and wind exposure. Majority of large trees are classified as medium risk because they have potential to fail in high winds due to wind exposure, this doesnt mean all medium risk trees are recommended for removal. That decision is up to the land owner with the assistance of their arborist. Im not upset it was cut down but Im not happy about it either, wrong tree for the location.
Im glad the job was done without accident and the ENTIRE crew deserves credit for the hard work and planning. I want to make a point that this crew wasnt as safe and well trained as they need to be and I would save my high compliments. Many serious safety risks, that are avoidable, were taken by the several members of the crew.
    -Standing beneath a suspended load
-Extending hand, arm, and shoulders inside the hopper of the wood chipper. Lunging forward into the wood chipper with hand to force feed small debris!
    -Side loading the crane
    -Unbalanced load
-Hook attached to chain instead of shackle
-Directing the crane action with too much up force
-Climber was not in safe position while load was moving laterally
    -Unsafe chainsaw use
Every one of these safety issues could have resulted in the death of one or more people on site. This crew wasnt trained properly or they were ignoring important safety guidelines. Professionalism and skill isnt judged simply on the job getting done rather it is determined on the job getting done right.

@@mstrdiver For a tree like this, you would only remove dead or dangerous limbs but NEVER top it or head the branches back. Selective thinning would be acceptable. If it has to be topped, it's time for it to come down (I agree that this tree presented hazards, but I am not fully in agreement that it needed to come down). In any case, whoever posted this video is a liar. The tree was perfectly healthy.

Sequoiadendron and Sequoia sempervirens are famous and highly prized for their resistance to decay. Also, that particular individual tree clearly wasn't rotten. Householders just wanted it gone, presumably, with "hazard" being the check box that needed to be filled to get the permit. Shame.

Urban forests are being decimated throughout the world, because of whimsical reasons. Cars kill more people than trees, but nobody is limiting cars. It is my view that local Government must manage Urban Forests both Municipal and privately owned, based on a Tree Policy, and a Management Plan. That tree is irreplaceable.

It was a redwood. I didn't see specifically which cuts you were referring to, but if you remove an entire limb it has to be a flush cut; flush to the trunk. I didn't watch 100% of the video, but from what I did see it was a healthy tree. Of course there was always a chance of a large limb snapping, but the whole tree itself was quite healthy from what I could see.

Fantastic! Get proper adrenalin rush from these sorts of jobs! And good to see a pro at work! See too many amateurs who clearly think 'how hard can it be'!! And unfortunately they only realise when they're lying in 'A&E' with a few less limbs than they started with that morning!! One thing I will just pick up on, and this is certainly not criticism of how the job was done! When chaining up the section to be cut, it would have been better to have the chains opposite rather than both on the same side. This would have made the lift vertical, therefore greatly reducing the chances of pinching the bar in the cut! But more importantly 'STIHL T-shirt' when cutting with a 'Husky'!!! How very dare you!!!! lol!!

I went back and looked at those cuts you were referring to. Sorry, but you're wrong. When removing an entire limb from this type of tree it must be flush cut to the trunk. Those were relatively big cuts, so it would take several years to close up. There was nothing unhealthy about that tree. Once again, those limbs could easily (and probably had) snap off without warning even if healthy, which was probably why it was removed.

The redwood tree family is native to the Pacific Region including New Zealand. The planning and skill used in this takedown was amazing. An unbalanced takedown is just as hazardous as a gale.
The climate is far more dynamic than AGW proponents would want you think. Know events with glaciers provide proof. Trees overrun be a glacier ~1000 years ago were under ice whose cores, the scientists said, were a lot older. An incident with an exact date and time was uncovered, but the ice supposedly accumulated over a period of ~500 years, but only 50 had passed.

Putting all the "tree hugging" shit comments aside and taking consideration of the skill involved in removing the tree it is pretty evident that the tree was healthy and sound. Arboriculture technique probably could have been used to retain it. The removal was probably based more on someone buying a house and then shitting themselves when it was windy than anything based on science. Not to say that who ever planted the tree in a small suburban yard was probably misguided.

Unless it's deemed as diseased or dead, a homeowner has to pay recompense to the city for new developments. Its a great tree, sad to see it go but it is what it is. Lasted almost 150 years!

Redwood trees aren't native to New Zealand. It had to have been brought over from the west coast and planted. I wonder how many other places these magnificent trees can live.
seems a shame to cut it down. I understand the fears of it falling. Standing all by itself like it is would also expose it more to wind. Still, it seems a shame, but it is what it is.
Does New Zealand have any laws concerning non-native trees like this redwood?

well i dont think so cause theres a forest of 250 foot tall redwoods in new zeland that has native ferns and endangered birds in new zeland that love the redwoods.
