Rhythm Roulette: Mura Masa | Mass Appeal

- Guernsey producer Mura Masa released his self-titled debut album in July, a project abundant with pop, rap and house influences. So it's no surprise the Stormzy and A$AP Rocky collaborator was prepared for the random records he pulled during the latest episode of MASS APPEAL's "Rhythm Roulette."
Masa's laid-back demeanor didn't necessarily give away the excitement he felt upon stumbling on vinyls like William Basinski's A Shadow in Time, abstract music that Masa confesses he "samples all the time." The 21-year-old also plucked Luis' "Dreamt Takes" and Cognition's "The Road." Not exactly the most coherent of crate findings, but the producer makes it work. "It's getting a little bit U.K. in here," gushes Masa as he tinkers with the instrumentals. "A little bit dirty, a little bit naughty."
From there, Masa fires up futuristic disco synths and muffled reggae drops. You decide how naughty he got.

I really wish these videos showed more of their actuall processing and sound design rather than just filming the artist. mura masa is a master though
guess thats totally upto the beatmaker, not the people in charge of this series..
Thats not what the shows about. Theres a million in depth tutorials on sound design and sample flipping but this show is about showcasing an artists workflow and work enviroment. Thats what makes it so inspiring, you peak into the daily life of a pro
In all actuality, the beatmaking process all the way through can be quite boring. The way they edit makes it still interesting. If you say through every sample chop and instrument selection, you would lose your mind
100% agree. that is why Bwana's episode was the best.
I think in general the Pro's probably intentionally don't Sound Design during the creative process...I would guess they'd do that way ahead of time so they can just free flow create that much faster

the people calling this trash are the same people who can't accept creative license and don't understand work flow... this was done in a few hours and he created the skeleton for a good vibe, it's almost impossible to expect something that rings well in your ear quickly because of the approach that he uses, and why did i bother to even write this comment lol

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Everybody seems so focused on making a banging beat or something soulful and that's cool, but say this ambient reggae wavy track wasn't a breath of fresh air. Percussion was on point too. Just makes your hips move by themselves lol

Before you hate, know that Mura Masa is not a hip hop producer. Also, check out his music that is actually finished. He is an above average producer at the least
UK/European Live users tend to use the Arrangement view a lot more by placing audio samples directly in there and adjusting them manually. I've never though to work that way, I prefer audio clips in Session view and then record the launching and stopping/muting of clips to create my sequence in the Arrangement view. Just an observation.
