I've been interested in this journal. I love typing on this paper and would love to have a journal with this paper, but do you think it is too lightweight and might not be able to hold ephemera?
That’s a good question! I think even though light weight, it’s still a really sturdy paper and I’ll bet it would hold up just fine were you to add in bits and bobs.

There are many examples in my stories of people using these journals woth ephemera- typically they can use both sides if they do it right!
@@onionskinjournal7819 This paper might work in a journal, but it was considered the cheapest junk you could buy when I was young, and no writer used it for anything except making copies of stories. Editors considered it nasty junk, and would read anything submitted on it, and only the poverty stricken used it for writing letters.
Onionskin paper was also one of the things linked with "starving artists", life in skid row hotels, and being an alcoholic. This was the only paper such "artists" could afford, but it was not sought after paper.
I wouldn't even use oit for making copies of stories because I was never that desperate, even when I was poor, and as an editor I must have thrown away a ton of it over the years because about nine out of ten wannabe writers never bothered reading guidelines, and so never became anything more than wannabes.
Nothing will damage a typewriter faster than using onionskin paper without a sheet of carbon paper, and a sheet of at least twenty pound typing paper covering the onionskin. Typewriters work best when used with paper that is at least twenty pound, and that has at least a twenty percent cotton content.
I used it a lot in the 1970's and 80's for letters by airmail. It was readily available in regular stores
The snake eating itself is called an ouroboros: an ancient symbol that represents the eternal cyclic renewal of life, death, and rebirth. Love all your content, and it often makes me want to start a second channel dedicated to all my love of pens, stationary, and the like. :)
I remember being able to purchase onion skin paper at office/stationery stores years ago. Thank you for bringing back the sounds of this lovely paper.

We used to use it for airmail letters as it made your letter lighter, therefore cheaper to send.
I own my grandmother's bible which has extremely delicate onion skin pages. It means so much. Used to take it to Sunday school.
It's a new paper for me so will have to try out! I like Three Candles Paper for letters and Tomoe river for my journals.
Really enjoyed your apperance on Applebloom too, it was a great , natural showing of pens that mean so much to you and an eclectic mix to boot.

This paper originally had a very utilitarian purpose. It was available anywhere they sold writing pads. It was used for writing letters that were going to be travelling by Air Mail, since air mail cost more and by using this paper you could keep the weight down and use less postage. I wrote my weekly letters to my mom as a 13 y/o when she was still in Cuba in the early 60s, with my aunt's Parker 51, which I now own . It came in pads just like the other papers and sold for about 25 cents a pad. I found a place some time back that sells it by the ream and I still have plenty left. I love to write on it.

I had forgotten how lovely the sound of onion skin paper is. I received many love letters from my military husband when stationed overseas on this crispy/crinkly paper.
You mention the bookmark and I was chagrined and disappointed to see the two misspellings on mine when I opened the $50.00 journal. The bookmark twice has “it's” misused as the possessive. They meant “its” - not “it is”. At a $50 buck price point I’d expect more careful and thorough editing. I can’t post pictures of a bookmark with typos on it 😱😱😱.

I started out with onion skin sheets as my first journal, documenting a travel. I held the sheets with a binder clip. Love the feel

Wow! That’s amazingly translucent. There’s no way one could write on both sides and it not be a hot mess. Delicately gorgeous though. Reminds me of ancient vellum paper. Your handwriting fits it well, Alicia. Cheers! Oh, I loved your Appelboom “3 pen” video. Haha! I thought for sure you’d give the backstory on how you acquired your M600 Red Tortoise. Such a sweet story.
That's just, wow, Alicia....trying to imagine what a broad nib would do - in terms of that, "morphing" you speak of. Certainly, it's beautifully constructed, & for me, writing on just one side is not unusual - for when I write to friends, I never write on both sides. Even the 'crinkle' factor has its own appeal. I too, like the cloth binding of the book - it's so precise; clearly, this is all about quality - & even the (undisclosed - by you) price tag would, I consider, be worth the outlay, however extravagant that may be. Green, of course is my all-time favourite hue (I'm Irish), & looking upon your latest acquisition, it sums up a hitherto forgotten era of materials that looked vintage - even when new; most apposite, too, that you are copying from, 'Jane Eyre' - an all-time classic. Admittedly, such a wonderfully presented notebook-cum-diary will not appeal to every taste (or budget), however, its retro aesthetics & clean lines (I am sure) will win over the more romantically inclined fountain pen users - it's certainly turned my head !
I'm smiling, here - delighted that you received this for gratis. Enjoy what 'remains of the day' {an excellent book if you haven't read it - or indeed, seen the film - the book (naturally) is better}.

I love to try this paper. This paper reminds me old AIR MAIL PAPER PADS I USED TO WRITE TO MY PEN PALS . thin one sided tissue like paper. Lovely stuff for a pen and Ink lovers.

My mom remembered using this for airmail and as a tracing paper equivalent back in the day. While it wasn't considered the best, she preferred to use it instead for tracing paper and multiple page letters when needing to save on postage. I have yet to try the stuff for these purposes.
Never heard of this journal! It sounds delicious, the crinkling of the paper. Wow, if you can ruin a journal with your incredible penmanship, no hope for me.

In my day, onionskin paper was pretty much useless. No editor anywhere would accept something written on onionskin, and guideless very often stated "NO ONIONSKIN PAPER" in capital letters. Many editors wouldn't even bother to return something submitted on onionskin pa[er because it's cheap, flimsy, difficult to handle, and so thin you could see through it, which made it infuriating. More often than not, editors would just throw anything submitted on onionskin paper in the trash.
Writers also thought it was nasty paper, and would never write on it. It was dirt cheap, and the only use for it was to place it behind carbon paper to create a copy of your final draft for your files. Then, if your story was lost in the mail, which happened too often, or lost at a publisher, which happened to often, you would still have a draft of the story.
Using it in a typewriter without a sheet of regular paper and a sheet of carbon paper in front of it is a very bad idea. Over time, it can crack the platen, or even break a key because there is zero cushioning.
I think the company making that journal is hugely exaggerating the importance of onionskin paper to writers of any kind. Onionskin was for making cheap copies of your stories, poems, etc., and sometimes for mailing something halfway around the world by plane, back before there was a postage agreement among many countries, and airmail was horrendously expensive.
I know it was also used as tracing paper in animation and some art/drawing, but that's outside my area of expertise. For writers, though, I don't think there was ever a time when any writer wanted to use onionskin paper for anything. It was simply the cheapest way you could make copies of your stories, and the cheapest, possible way you could send someone a letter. In the latter, the recipient usually wasn't pleased with your frugalness.
The only other reason anyone used onionskin was because you could see a lined sheet through it, and make yourself appear educated because you could write straight lines on unlined paper. It was a cheat, and everyone knew it. No one was impressed, but what else could the poor and uneducated do?
Anyway, if you really love your typewriter, do NOT type o onionskin paper. In fact, as rare as typewriters in excellent condition are getting, I would never type on anything other than a twenty pound paper that has a twenty percent cotton content. Even using two sheets of hard paper, which was NEVER something that was regularly practiced, despite what too many say today, is not good.
You can't just run out and buy a new platen today, and you can't run out and buy new keys, or other parts that can break. For one damaged typewriter to live, another often has to die, so proper care is a must, and paper choice is one of the main factors in lengthening the life of a typewriter. New fountain pens are made every day. New typewriters are not.

An un-ferreting is much more interesting than an unboxing! Very classy journal. Smythe sewing and linen binding, once common, are now rare. I’d like to try some loose sheets of the onion skin before getting the journal, since I’m a sheening, shading and shimmering scribbler.

I have that lovely edition of Jane Eyre and the same one of Wuthering Heights. My great aunt gave the set to me for my 13th birthday many years ago. Still have and cherish them.

Cool I work with onion skin at work but not for writing. I just got my first Lamy pen and its growing on me. Smooth action, great hand presence, and love the shape of it.

Your fountain pens simply glide across the onion skin. I use the Midori notebooks and find my fountain pens skip on various parts of any one page. Its beautiful to see the back side of your written page. There is something antique about it all. If you haven't started a "Commonplace" book this would be perfect! Thanks for the review.

@@gristlevonraben Its a combination of anything you want to reference back to. It can be quotes, highlights from books, recipes, good restaurants, your view on a great movie, anything you wish it to be. I researched Commonplace books on Pinterest to get me started.

Very cool paper. It would be interesting to see how legible it would be if you wrote a sort of "crossed letter" by writing in landscape orientation on the verso side.
There were onion skin papers in the 80s in an island in the subtropics before there was internet. So I guess it was not very rare at one time.

I can fully appreciate and understand the feeling of not wanting to use it. I have been gifted with numerous journals, but continue to use my composition books from Dollar General, for the exact same reason.

How are you filling the Kaweco? The converters are quite small. I think they hold less than 1ml. I have one of the piston and one squeeze converter for mine, but currently using some cartridges I have.

This is a beautiful journal; but I'm a lefty and I worry that the onion skin will result in a lot of smudging. I also wonder how the paper would hold up to an extra fine nib.
Well, I love onion skin for typing on, but not for journaling in a book. I bought a ream of vintage onion skin, and it is kind of magical, but it is only good for using on one side.. Give me Tomoe River paper any day for journaling.
Can regular pens be used on this kind of paper?
Have you tried out the Cosmo Air Light or Tora-Next paper journals yet? I'm quite curious. The Cosmo Air Light notebooks from Danika58 and the Yamamoto Cosmo Note seem to be comparatively priced to Leuchtturms and I've seen so many rave reviews of that paper for fountain pen ink.

It’s a beautiful journal but I would feel a bit intimidated to use it. I would just keep it in a box and take it out just to feel the pages.

I cannot imagine not being able to use both sides of the page and I wonder how it would look if you do, it is, to me, a waste of money to not use the entirety of a page-front and back. It looks nice to use for letter writing if I could get a loose leaf version even though I do prefer journals. Thank you for the review!

EDIT: One day I’ll watch a whole video before commenting. 3 secs later and you already explain the inks and pens. 🙄 I’m gonna get some of that Dark Forest ink for my Brass Kaweco. It’s a little dry writer. Just a bit more wet and it would be epic.
Sadly when i discovered this notebook they are sold out! That tells me it was received well by the writing community who like to use with their fountain pens. I like to draw and doodle on this type of paper. I had been purchasing from a company that made hardbound books with GSM 52 Tomoe River paper but sadly i think we went out of business and was searching for a notebook with the very thin paper like onion skin. Hopefully they we also start to carry other types of notebooks with specialty papers they seem hard to come by. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your videos.
How do you keep your Kaweco Brass looking so clean? Mine is all patinated and dark already even though I just got it.

Very neat. I love ghosting, but there is ghosting and then there is ghosting. :) Too thin for me (I don't care for Tomoe River paper for that reason), but tempted to buy this anyway.

Does the Kaweco sport comes with a cap clip. I have seen them without clips. But your pen consist of the clip.

I would love to have one to mess with but I would never use one as a daily writer. It’s basically getting half a notebook for 42 bucks.
Paper Penguin co on Etsy that makes Onion Paper TN inserts, the cost is far more reasonable. I use standard size the most and with 80pg / 40pgs using only one side - so for me, the cost is about $7.50 before shipping and tax per insert. There’s other sellers on Etsy that create onion paper notebooks or TN inserts.
