    The young singer of this song hails from Aberdeenshire in the North-East corner of Scotland; The fishing boats featured are registered at local fishing ports Banff (BF), Fraserburgh (FR) etc... The scenes from the video feature towns and villages in the locality which were, and to a great degree, still are very deeply religious communities where most shops and businesses are closed every Sunday, and very few public transport operates, and where the towns and fishing villages themselves are Havens of Rest...I grew up there... Happy Days... Awesome !!!

    In the U.S. published Church Hymnal (referred to in the South as "the Red Book") the third verse reads:
    How Precious the tho't that we all may recline,
    Like John the beloved and blest.
    On Jesus' strong arm where no tempest can harm,
    Secure in the Haven of Rest.
    However, the third verse sung here is more fitting in my opinion, and compliments the story told in the song:
    The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole,
    Has been the old story so blest,
    Of Jesus, who’ll save whosoever will have
    A home in the Haven of Rest.
    The story told is in verse:
    1 - I was convicted of my sin
    2 - I accepted and submitted myself to Christ the Savior
    3 - (either one) Oh how sweet it is to be a child of God, saved by the fact stated in John 3:16;
    . . . For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever should believe up on Him shall be saved
    4 - Obedience to the great commission to go out and spread the gospel, and to let others know that they too can be saved.

    I write a weekly history column in East Tennessee (USA). I am planning to write about the history of the song "Haven of Rest". I would like to be able to refer my readers to this video. It would help if you would add something specific to the title of the video such as "McKay". I would also like to be able to share where the video was filmed. I had assumed Ulster until a few minutes ago. The mountains of East Tennessee was settled by Ulster Scots. The topography is much like Scotland.

      This song, 'Haven of Rest' was sang by Matthew James McKay and filmed in Gardenstown and surrounding area in North East Scotland

      Headline: An analogous hymn written by an Ulster Scot
      As the New Year approached, my heart turned to Ulster and the Ulster Scots who settled East Tennessee. If anything, they were a deeply religious and brave people who entered the wilderness and created a civilization where there was none. They set a high standard for today’s Appalachian youth.
      Of the early settlers, former Campbell County Schools Superintendent wrote in an unpublished manuscript dated January 13, 1930: “These men and women trusted God who did great things for them. They no doubt had a brighter and clearer vision and a richer and deeper spiritual experience than present-day people…Their common dangers, hardships, and needs drew them close to their Heavenly Father...Sometimes they would hold worship services in their sylvan chapel located in the great forest. Under the open canopy of Heaven and the shelter of the giant trees, they would sing those never-ending, never-dying songs of long ago. Those sturdy God-fearing fathers would pray, preach, and teach. The power of religion and worship then was generated by the unction of the Holy Spirit...These people endured privations, toils and sufferings at the constant risk and perils of their lives...They came, they wrought, they conquered. They carried to a successful finish a marvelous adventure under adverse conditions in the face of danger…They served their day and purpose well. They met their duty and discharged it faithfully. We trust they wear crowns.”
      At the age of sixteen, less than a decade before hostilities would erupt into the American Civil War, Henry Lake Gilmour sailed from his native Ulster to the port of Philadelphia, in hopes of learning the skills of nautical navigation. Despite being offered a position as a navigator by the ship’s captain he chose to stay in America. Although the Civil War found him a married man with two young sons at home, he enlisted in Union Army and was eventually promoted to Major. During his time of service, he was captured by the Confederates and confined at Libby Prison near Richmond, Virginia. As a POW, he helped other prisoners with dental problems. After his discharge, he enrolled as a student at the Philadelphia College of Dentistry graduating in 1867.
      A practicing dentist, he was also active in church work and directed the choir at the Pitman Grove Camp Meeting in Gloucester County, New Jersey, for forty years. He wrote several songs, but is best remembered as the author of the nautically inspired testimonial hymn Haven of Rest.
      My soul in sad exile was out on life’s sea,
      So burdened with sin and distressed,
      Till I heard a sweet voice, saying,
      “Make Me your choice”;
      And I entered the “Haven of Rest”!
      I yielded myself to His tender embrace,
      In faith taking hold of the Word,
      My fetters fell off, and I anchored my soul;
      The “Haven of Rest” is my Lord.
      The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole,
      Has been the old story so blest,
      Of Jesus, who’ll save whosoever will have
      A home in the “Haven of Rest.”
      O come to the Savior, He patiently waits
      To save by His power divine;
      Come, anchor your soul in the “Haven of Rest,”
      And say, “My Belovèd is mine.”
      Chorus:
      I’ve anchored my soul in the “Haven of Rest,”
      I’ll sail the wide seas no more;
      The tempest may sweep over wild, stormy, deep,
      In Jesus I’m safe evermore.
      Gilmour never lost his love for the sea. Generations before him, as Vikings, then as Scotsmen living on the outcropping of Scotland, and later as Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland, his and our forbearers were a seafaring people. Once the Scotch-Irish had ventured across the mountains into Southern Appalachia they no longer had access to the sea, but driven by the same restless spirit some like Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, kept moving further and further west.
      In his work Haven of Rest, Gilmour presents a seamless analogy between the nautical experience of being lost at sea in turbulent times and the turbulence of life’s sea.
      My brother entered into the Haven of Rest shortly before he passed from this life in June. For this I am thankful, and the chorus to Haven of Rest, penned by Gilmour, gave me comfort as I sang it over his lifeless corpse.
      If this dawning of a new year finds you
      sad and exiled “out on life’s sea”, may you by “faith taking hold of the Word” find peace and safety in Christ. He is the Haven of Rest. Writer’s Note: A video of Matthew James McKay, a Scottish lad dressed in a traditional kilt, singing Haven of Rest surrounded by beautiful scenery along the coast of northeast Scotland, is available on youtube at Best ‘Haven of Rest’.
