The Aston Villa conversation is so weird. Unai Emery is an amazing manager, and top 5 in the league, easy. But it feels disingenuous to paint it like he has pulled a relegation battling team into the champions league. That team was under performing under Gerrard. Likely HUGELY under performing. That Aston Villa Squad is SOLID. Emery raises them from top 8, to top (currently) top 4.

However, in his first season there he made poor team selections in the run in for 4th spot and chose the worst keeper for the Europa League. He had to be moved on.

There are none so blind as those who will not see. That quote is one pf the best of the old quotes as it can so often be applied and in this instance, perfect for Rory after his comment about Havertz not being particularly good. While pretty average in the first half, Havertz played a blinder in the second half and scored twice against his old club. Perhaps its because he had the effrontery to celebrate his goals? Not that I blame him after Chelsea came so close to ruining his career.

Xavi is staying at Barca, Bayern look like they’re going for Rangnick. Emery has signed a new deal, and in the interview he did after he stated how happy he is at Villa because he gets everything he wants at Villa. When we signed him, we had a director of football in Lange, and CEO in Purslow. But Emery with the owners had both of those moved on into new positions/left the club, and they brought in Monchi who is Emerys friend and previous co worker. They brought in all his own medics, his choices of coaches, sports scientists, his choice of scouts, his choice of personal assistant. The owners literally handed over the keys to him and said “it’s yours”. He’s been able to shape the club as he wants it on the football operations side of things. We’ve brought in a new commercial director who is trying to bring in new revenue to match Unái’s brilliance on the pitch so we can buy players and keep him happy. As much as I agree, Bayern/Barca/Man Utd etc are the top tier of clubs, they wouldn’t give Unai the same amount of control, and it is because of this control, that he is able to get this level of performance out of the players and elevate the club to where it is now. We see Utd now are putting in place their sporting directors and technical directors, they are not of Unai’s choosing, people he has worked with previously, that he trusts. And off the pitch, the owners have heavily invested in the club that Unai owns in Spain, we have sent some of our youth players their on loan too, we have Unai’s son playing in our U21’s… i know I might be blinkered because now we have a manager that is so incredible and making all of us fans dream again, the club are doing their very best to make it almost impossible for him to leave or be lured by one of these super clubs. And if he does, it would cost a large amount of money to take him.

Emery’s style can only be successful in clubs that are considered to be overachieving for their status. The culture of low expectations and underdogs
The ultra pragmatic (almost submissive) approach conceding possession, pressure, shots etc would not be accepted at a club that expects itself to be in the upper echelon for example against a team with significantly less resources. It’s why PSG and Arsenal were ultimately failures and given little time to adapt. The language barrier was greater which I believe plays a big role, it’s obviously no coincidence his greatest success has been achieved domestically.
