Just did this on my two T480 s. Quite fiddly, but it works. I did not use paste but regular solder. Hardest part was to clean out the holes.

This looks HARD AS HELL. Are you offering a mail-in repair service? Am interested, just picked up T480s

Thanks for the video. Is it necessary to change both ports at the same time? I think I just have the wrong input load

Thanks for sharing ! What kind of soldering materials did you use? Any flux paste will do? ... also what is that grey paste you did use to heat solder the usb port?.. Sorry for the silly questions ... I just never had done such fine soldering before. What temperature did you use the heat gun? I would take mine to a professional, but nobody wants to replace the usb c in my area. Thanks

They are all very common solder wires. Any flux is fine. Gray solder paste is solder paste. The temperature is recommended to be 350 degrees. It is also okay to increase the temperature appropriately according to your surrounding environment.

what you explained is exactly what stops me buying a t480 or any of the new thinkpads that still have soldered-on type c. In the end I picked up a t470 though the CPU is only 7th gen with 2 cores.

please practice soldering first. do not soldering first time on any important tech otherwise u risk messing it up due to lack of experience

@@MONTGATECHthanks for this. I have a bunch of "dead" laptops to practice with and this info + vid helps a lot. I have service manuals but visual like this is great

Do damaged ports often kill the PD or ThunderBolt chips?

The Chinese designer probably didn't but the Chinese Accountant did ! Probably it was a decision in cost saving exercise when using automation .

IKR! These USB-C ports often fail in my experience. Out of warranty repair cost is about 800 (they just swap out the whole board.)
Thinking of replacing the ports myself.

ya apparently the whole world (other than me) knew Lenovo's USB C charging ports were crap when I bought mine 3 years ago. Why do I always discover this stuff after the fact I ask myself? As far as repairing it goes, thanks but no thanks. I'll try another brand next time.

Looks simple enough. Confused why so many people say it is not replaceable.
