I find it rather amusing that the biggest issue people have is that Hester didn't get cut up properly. It seems to be quite different to the books, nonetheless I've been waiting for the film for ages, so I think I can wait a couple more months.
It's such a pivotal part to her character though. She is meant to be quite grotesque to look at and that, along with everything else that happens to her, makes her quite an angry person. And it's quite important how Tom starts seeing past her grim and angry exterior and focusing on her kindness underneath. The scar is barely noticeable in this. I just hope they make her a bit unlikeable to begin with so that the audience has to soften up to her too.
Yeah and its strange and annoying that they are doing it like this, i understand adaptation but if you wanted to be shallow and have her being attractive, then make it that when she has the scarf on she looks fine, focus the scar mostly around her mouth them and make her like ugly if she takes it off. That way you can have your generic super model heroine, while retaining the whole character of Hester. Im still a little bothered by what they did to the Jenny, i mean we have canon illustrations of what the jenny looks like, i dont understand why they seem to be pushing away from the airship blimp look.
I searched through the comments to see if anyone else felt it too 😂😂😂😂 It bothered me the WHOLE TRAILER. Clary has red hair, so does Hester. Clary's Mom escaped her Dad when the house burned down after finding out what he was doing. She took Clary away to be protected. The similarities between Magnus Bane and the chick in the red jacket. The fact that the actor who played Jace is in here with the same long blonde hair. The actor who also played Simon is in here with the same hair. I mean, hair is hard to change. But. Like. Between Magnus, Jace, and Simon they all look similar in both movies. Clary's dad and this villain are BOTH named Valentine.... Through the whole trailer I was wondering if this was a new story from Cassandra Clare.
@@shadowseer07 I looked it up and Mortal Engines is a book by Phillip Reeves published in 2001. Mortal Instruments was published in 2007, so I can't be mad that this resembles MI. I should be mad that MI resembles this! Now I wonder if Cassandra Clare ever read this book, because if so...
I had never heard of Mortal Engines but as I watched the trailer, my first thought was "wow, nothing this imaginative could be an original idea. This HAS to be a book"
and still it was massive failure, I was so sad and still am, just watched it, and its good but its not peter jackson good, after 3 screening, the pacing is just off, and the Ressurectman didn't make sense, the amluet eye didn't make sense that she never "opened" it it clearly was obvious there is something, from her mother and many more screenplay misshaps and editing , but the production and atmosphere costumes etc are fenomenal, but the main part casting the boy is not good, only memorable charr is the asian fighter and obviously "Mr.Smith" :D both die, and the 2 mains didn't had chemistry at all nor acting skills, what I read and saw the movies should be huge like crossover matrix/lotr, produced from P.Jackson, there should had been 3 big movies but... nad they just slashed it re-edited, cash cuts everywhere cramed into one . Jackson wanted to have huge universe of 3 movies of moving cities battling all over the globe huge lore etc, non was really there , sadly :/
OH LORD !!! THEYVE GOT SHRIKE!!! really hope they delve into his backstory a bit (tho I guess if they adapt the prequel series it'll be way more of a punch if it's a surprise) (also it's a shame Katherine seems to be a minor character now instead of one of the three Main Players) GOD i have waited ten years for an adaptation of this book... i am so nervous and SO EXCITED

@@masterpenguin8472 That is because steampunk has not been done on anywhere near this scale - even "Wild Wild West" was smaller-scaled (and the scorpion there was "classic steampunk"). London is a steampunk-style carrier (as in "aircraft carrier" - steampunk-style)- the "Mortal Engine" is the city's crew - they power the city.
I'm so happy that not only does Shrike sound horrifying but also looks somewhat creepy. A bit of a shame that they have changed a lot of him from the books. Also, wasn't the Medusa that Heaters mother finds meant to be shaped like a football? Also it looks like Bevis pod appears near the end of the trailer and I fought in the book it said he was bald.

Her mouth was wrenched sideways in a permanent sneer, her nose was a smashed stump and her single eye stared at him out of the wreckage, as grey and chill as a winter sea. "
@@CruelestChris "I amar prestar aen" = The world is changed. Galadriel said it in the prologue of FOTR. and here we have Hugo Weaving who played Elrond saying it.
don't listen to the critics. just go watch it first & judge by yourself. for me personally, this is one of the most beautiful, imaginative, & epic film/movie of the year 2018. it has a Ghibli & Final Fantasy feel (& also Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan too). the story is also good & heartfelt. don't miss this movie, especially for game & anime nerds/geeks/otaku. will probably watch it again 2nd time on IMAX, really worth it 👍👍
Because things just plainly doesn't make sense, and the difference between this and other movies which made no sense like superhero movies or something like say Transformers or Pacific Rim is that they didn't try to take things seriously so people ignore the "why's" and the "how's" things are possible, Mortal Engines actually tried to be a "what if" story. World's ended, nuclear holocaust happened, so let's build cities that eat each other for parts! Why? If you have the technology to build moving cities that can run from parts from other cities, wouldn't it make sense that the other guy would build as many missiles as possible to just literally annihilate your city? There's a reason the military in our world invest in drones and stealth fighters instead of tanks, no matter how fantastic your tank is, they'll stand no chance. Why would having a shutdown device that requires you to be up close to the weapon changes anything? why not just go there and blow the thing apart without it? Why would you eat other cities? why not go to a mineral source and mine them and move to another? The basic world building in both the book and the movie are stupid, and people know how stupid they are. The movie also has little to no character development whatsoever, on top of that, the main character has no defining characteristics whatsoever. This is why the movie flopped, hard.

Howls Moving Castle (book) came out in 1986, Mortal Engines (book) came out in 2002. Howls Moving Castle (film) came out 2004, Mortal Engines (film) came out 2018. Please explain where Mortal Engines inspired Howls Moving Castle?
John the way it was worded sounded differently. But regardless neither were inspired by the other, Philip Reeve has never stated he’s even read Howls Moving Castle - let alone be inspired by it. If he was inspired by anything it would probably be Monty Python, which he’s stated he’s a fan of.
SO hyped for this movie! The Mortal Engines Series by Philip Reeve (along with Chris Riddell's Edge Chronicles), inspired me to write. Couldn't recommend it more.
I immediately go thinking about Lord of the Rings when I see this trailer even though it is totally unrelated. When Peter Jackson gets an opportunity to make an epic film, he does it and does it well. It also looks like this will be a full-on series.
Why do film studios do this?? This trailer tells basically the whole plot. I'm 100% sure, if you had a 1 minute trailer showing a couple clips of picturesque scenery vast valleys with no human life and a building slowly passing, the music changes and a large moving city is revealed, that would have had the same wow effect without spoiling the story and the plot. I would add more mystery.
@Eli If it's a book adaptation, I assume there is more than one. I don't know about the whole plot, but it's very clear what is this about, who are the main heroes and villains are. We know that this is a world, where cities can move and devour one another, it seems. Meanwhile, the girl is the key to changing the either the fate of London or the whole world order. And she will succeed, based on this trailer, going through a lot of adventures with a boy and probably fall for him. Seems pretty straightforward. Why would I want to go and see this movie, if it seems very obvious.
In retrospect, I really enjoyed the books for their 1 character development, 2 the gradual reveal of the reality of the world, and 3 the thematic tension between the main characters. 1 Hester has no need to change; and in the books, she doesn't. Tom looks like he's not the perspective character here; so his development is cheapened. Katherine and Bevis haven't even been shown yet; who knows if they'll even impact the plot at all; so I can't depend on their character arc. Is there any character development left? 2 This trailer revealed like 90% of the secrets and dark parts of this world's reality that we learned gradually in the book. Is there any intrigue left? 3 the tension between the cast. Does Tom even matter in the movie? We don't even know his name from the trailers. It looks like its just gonna be action hero Hester and needy sidekick loverboy, with none of the main thematic clashes in their beliefs that made them an interesting duo in the first place. Will there be any interesting character chemistry at all? I'm very worried that this adaptation is gonna get the same immensely disappointing treatment that The Hobbit did, but even worse since they're gonna feel super cautious about doing anything interesting with the main character since she's a woman and that's such a hot button issue. Pessimistic AF so I won't be disappointed no matter what happens. Maybe I'll have the pleasant surprise of being proven totally and utterly wrong about everything. I sincerely hope so.
Couldn't agree more. I want to stay positive, but genuinely scared that what is essentially the main story line is being subverted in place of a standard revenge flick. Setting up Valentine as a villain in the trailers seems like a huge waste - though his initial "reveal" in the book was fairly early, it was still a twist I hadn't seen coming. Maybe this was a trailer targeted at fans to try to add a twist to the twist... let's see.
The main selling point for this movie was the "strong female lead". It's ALL you see throughout the trailers. Why they keep doing this is beyond me since the past few years has been NOTHING but female leads or equally strong female sidekicks. Movies that do this usually flop too. But they keep doing it so they don't hurt women's feelings.
Never read the book. But I'll watch a movie about steampunk-transformer-cities battling each other with magic and mayhem any day... Just the idea of it is already so epic..
l love how the entire promotion is organised around Peter Jackson's name. Half of the peoplke thinks PJ is the director of the movie while he is not...
Lily no he's not. But he is heavily involved in this project not just by writting the screenplay but also by directing the second unit regarding action scenes and fight choreography. So he is kinda promoting this film as his because in a way it is.
Anyone who thinks this is a creation of Peter Jackson, it’s not. I’m so glad he is making it a movie, but this is the first book of the Predator Cities series. I highly suggest reading it. Also it’s actually more about the guy he’s with for the first book, but new directions are always cool!

I just hope they make her a bit unlikeable to begin with so that the audience has to soften up to her too.
I think I’ve been waiting about 6-8 years
Yea but her being unlikable but also still hot makes no sense. Being ugly and jaded about it is her initial character.....
I was sooooo annoyed that they had to make her look pretty. She's supposed to be missing an eye goddammit!
Does anyone else get those "Shadowhunter/ Mortel Instrument" vibes? 🤔
@@InTimeFrozen I thought I was the only one, its been driving me crazy? What is the connection here?
TenshiAkuma Yet I thought I was the only one😂
@@shadowseer07 I looked it up and Mortal Engines is a book by Phillip Reeves published in 2001. Mortal Instruments was published in 2007, so I can't be mad that this resembles MI. I should be mad that MI resembles this! Now I wonder if Cassandra Clare ever read this book, because if so...
@@shadowseer07 I googled "similarities between Mortal Instruments and Mortal Engines" and had a fun time reading about the issue😥😂😥
I had never heard of Mortal Engines but as I watched the trailer, my first thought was "wow, nothing this imaginative could be an original idea. This HAS to be a book"
Coming from someone whose never read the books, I thought this movie was badass.
i saw this movie the other night i loved the ideas and effects and actors
This movie is super incredible! If I had to rate it out of 10 I would give it a 100.
and still it was massive failure, I was so sad and still am, just watched it, and its good but its not peter jackson good, after 3 screening, the pacing is just off, and the Ressurectman didn't make sense, the amluet eye didn't make sense that she never "opened" it it clearly was obvious there is something, from her mother and many more screenplay misshaps and editing , but the production and atmosphere costumes etc are fenomenal, but the main part casting the boy is not good, only memorable charr is the asian fighter and obviously "Mr.Smith" :D both die, and the 2 mains didn't had chemistry at all nor acting skills, what I read and saw the movies should be huge like crossover matrix/lotr, produced from P.Jackson, there should had been 3 big movies but... nad they just slashed it re-edited, cash cuts everywhere cramed into one . Jackson wanted to have huge universe of 3 movies of moving cities battling all over the globe huge lore etc, non was really there , sadly :/
Shallow mind you have
Loving Peter Jackson's ambition! This looks super crafty and original! Bring it on!
This film is awesome they need to make number 2
Giant cities on wheels.
This looks cool!
Alexandra Brown Would you recommend that I try to read this book before the film?
@@5Zacc *I* certainly would recommend you do that, the book is far more interesting and it might be good to read the book before the film defines all your mental images for you
Yes read them for the love of god fucking read them.
Random Person Thanks, I’ll try to get it read before the film comes out them
Lets be real, this is really an extended version of Monty Pythons 'the crimson permanent assurance' skit...
I really loved the steampunk feel of the movie, the neo-victorian costumes were gorgeous and so were the actors.
Yeah, you don't really see that often in movies, let alone blockbusters.
Great trailer universal pictures! Keep up the great work!😁😎😀😉
This is just steampunk Agario.
Change My Mind.
Paul Dickinson oh my god you’re right
Bro this movie was freaking incredible!!!!!!!
Why did this bomb????
I need more!!!!
It would seem I have developed a sixth sense. Recognising crappy movies from the trailer alone.
This is going to blow...
Wish his voice was nastier. He sounds kind of like a Lord of the Rings villain.
@@jesseclark7105 well it is made by Peter Jackson
So glad they are people here who've actually read the books!
@@SB-hu4lk I got and finished the book last September so it's still fresh in the mind.
At least they kept him with his coat
This movie is bad ass!! I went to see in 3D it was the bomb, excellent work love the idea behind it, I would love to see it in the gaming platforms, really great movie.
Personally I think that this movie, It's not a some kind of failure or box office bomb or anything it's just a start of a winning path. So please do not give up on making movies like this we love them so much also I still couldn't help keep watching it.Looking forward for another film like this one. way to go guys.👏👌😀💕
Everyone is out watching for superhero movies and stuff but this will be the biggest hit of them all
"She is beautiful, and strange, and very, very rare." And very very pissed, from the look of it.
"She was no older than Tom, and she was hideous. A terrible scar ran down her face from forehead to jaw, making it look like a portrait that had been furiously crossed out. Her mouth was wrenched sideways in a permanent sneer, her nose was a smashed stump and her single eye stared at him out of the wreckage, as grey and chill as a winter sea.
"
Just normal demon possessed PMS.
I need to watch this, Peter Jackson did a great one on this😎
You had me at Moving Cities.
I hope this is going to be as amazing as the visuals lead us to believe.
this trailer was a LOT better than the first one (first full-length trailer that is, not the teaser that came before that - that was awesome)
"The world is changing" is literally the cheesiest line you can put in a movie trailer.
2:00 "I have to, for my mother." That was a literal cringe moment for me, I think I said Yuck out-loud at that part.
would ypu prefer "i amar prestar aen"?
No, that's "A storm is coming."
@@CruelestChris "I amar prestar aen" = The world is changed. Galadriel said it in the prologue of FOTR. and here we have Hugo Weaving who played Elrond saying it.
@@ubikledek
Yeah, but "A storm is coming" is a much bigger cliche since it's the modern version of "it was a dark and stormy night."
Don't know about the story or the characters yet but the movie looks gorgeous.
"he's here" like Thanos 😂
That noise when Shrike shows up.
don't listen to the critics. just go watch it first & judge by yourself. for me personally, this is one of the most beautiful, imaginative, & epic film/movie of the year 2018. it has a Ghibli & Final Fantasy feel (& also Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan too). the story is also good & heartfelt. don't miss this movie, especially for game & anime nerds/geeks/otaku. will probably watch it again 2nd time on IMAX, really worth it 👍👍
I have read the books and this looks great!
I remember watching it in theatres when I was in First grade I was so excited.
Now I'm in college and I'm 10x as excited as before.
THAT GAVE ME A MIDDLE-EARTH FEELINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I saw this movie 🎥 and I liked it
Why do ppl not like the movie. Watched it tday and it was awesomeeee
Lack of character development, overabundance of clichés, and favouring visuals over storytelling.
It was an awesome movie haters just want to see boobs ass
@@jamesmorris587 u have horrible horrible taste for movies bro
@@nicoinformatics For me, I do not watch movies in order to live reality or to benefit from anything. What I have is to make a break for my brain and stop thinking about life's costs and let my imagination enjoy

Felix Martins Howl's Moving Castle!
Howls Moving Castle (book) came out in 1986, Mortal Engines (book) came out in 2002. Howls Moving Castle (film) came out 2004, Mortal Engines (film) came out 2018. Please explain where Mortal Engines inspired Howls Moving Castle?
@@jamesb7924 He Meant the book was inspired by howls moving castle....
How do you not understand
John the way it was worded sounded differently. But regardless neither were inspired by the other, Philip Reeve has never stated he’s even read Howls Moving Castle - let alone be inspired by it. If he was inspired by anything it would probably be Monty Python, which he’s stated he’s a fan of.
@@jamesb7924 Actually he did stated it.
Acutal good movie...nice concept...worthy to watch it
I love how he used the line that was used in the hobbit!!!! "The world is changing, nothing can stand in the face of this"
Hera Hilmar was awesome! Good cast.
SO hyped for this movie! The Mortal Engines Series by Philip Reeve (along with Chris Riddell's Edge Chronicles), inspired me to write. Couldn't recommend it more.

They should have called it “Daddy Issues”
How to Turn a Postapocalyptic Novel into Disney Princess Movie in 5 Easy Steps:
You just have to watch Mortal Engines
Any movie with Hugo Weaving as the antagonist has to be badass.
I immediately go thinking about Lord of the Rings when I see this trailer even though it is totally unrelated. When Peter Jackson gets an opportunity to make an epic film, he does it and does it well. It also looks like this will be a full-on series.
Assuming this film doesn't flop at the box office.
Why would I want to go and see this movie, if it seems very obvious.
,
Even if it doesn't tell the plot, it's just not that interesting anyway. The moving cities are the cool part, just showcase that and keep it brief.
I'm nor wonder how many viewers have read the book, considering most of the praise is being given to the visuals.
When he said “The world is changing” it brought me back to middle earth
I like the music
go and listen to it … It's Brand X Music - Survivor
I loved this, buying it on 4K, HDR Blu Ray when it's released :)
This was horrible
Never read the book.
But I'll watch a movie about steampunk-transformer-cities battling each other with magic and mayhem any day... Just the idea of it is already so epic..
l love how the entire promotion is organised around Peter Jackson's name. Half of the peoplke thinks PJ is the director of the movie while he is not...
Lily no he's not. But he is heavily involved in this project not just by writting the screenplay but also by directing the second unit regarding action scenes and fight choreography. So he is kinda promoting this film as his because in a way it is.
It's also filmed almost entirely in his studios in NZ.
This is much better than the first trailer!
Peter Jackson is nothing short of a cinematic genius
Too bad he couldn't bring his A-game to this.
Anyone who thinks this is a creation of Peter Jackson, it’s not. I’m so glad he is making it a movie, but this is the first book of the Predator Cities series. I highly suggest reading it. Also it’s actually more about the guy he’s with for the first book, but new directions are always cool!
This movie really feels like a peter Jackson movie.

The live action adoption of howls moving castle looks insane!
And I'm here, hoping the trailer plays in the theater when we see grindelwald again so it catches mom's eye, to chicken to tell her I wanna see it lol
It looks interesting, but for some reason I feel like it's going to fall short of everyone's expectations. Not exactly sure why myself, it's just a hunch.
