- How To Create A Child Theme For WordPress - It's SUPER EASY, with this video
One of the most important best practices is to use a WordPress child theme.
The only problem is many people over-complicate the process. So in this video, I explain it in the simplest terms possible and show you the best way to make one for your WordPress theme.

Dude I love you haha!
I almost never have success with the first tutorial video I find on CZcams - Thank you so much!
Thanks for trusting in me, I think if you stick around you'll see that I'm offering the best and easiest to follow solutions for WordPress problems.
I love your tutorials Marijan.
2020 and still a valid helpful tutorial. Thank you!
I usually have to watch like 4 videos before finding the right answer when it comes to making changes to my site. I clicked on one video (this one) for this topic and it was fast, simple, and provided the perfect amount of detail. Thank you so much!
I'm glad this was helpful Minbet Media and thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this video, 2h of looking into documentation and trying different videos, and here you are! worked from the first time !
Thanks, that makes me feel good about all the changes I made. Your videos are the best ! Thanks again.
Thank you Dennis!
This is brilliant! Thank you so much!
Your Welcome!!
OMGosh! Thank you so much for this! I did all this work upgrading my site and didn't create a child theme. I knew nothing about this. I'm so glad to find out about this plugin. The best part is that it will save what I've already done. I was so afraid that I would have to start over from scratch since I was adding a child theme after the fact. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have zero knowledge about web design and this was very easy to do.
Amazing! As always, Adam, fantastically clear instructions. I went step by step through your explanation with my new website open and it worked....effortlessly! I always look for your videos first because you just get down to the matter and any small detours you make tend to be pearls of wisdom. I liked the way you showed the next steps about future CSS changes. Thank you for posting. Cheers, Paul
Hey Paul, I'm glad that you enjoy the videos that I put out and your willingness to listen to the little extra bits of info that I put in these videos.
Hi Adam. Great tutorial once again!
Q: Let's say I already started my website and things are pretty customized to my likings. If I didn't do a child theme at first (didn't knew at the time about parent and child things 🤪) can I still make one now with this pluggin so that everything stays the same and I just select to work on the child (active) afterwards?
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Dom
Adam,
Love the tutorial, simplicity!
I do have a question...
After the child theme is created, I want to make small changes
to the style sheet or just any code in general. So using the plugin, I copy the
file/folder over to the child theme and make code changes. In the event that I
really screw things up beyond my repair capabilities, how do I delete my
changes or the file/folder that was copied over to the child theme so that
things go back to normal?
Thanks!!
Yes you are correct. As far as deleting, you can access the file system via FTP or your cPanel. I usually go the cpanel route since it is so much faster for me.
Oh my gosh, you just changed my life!!! I have been struggling to understand what the heck a child theme is. And in less than 10 minutes, you have made it so clear. And a big bonus, you gave me the info on how to use it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
I'm going to be spending some time watching all of your videos in the next few days.
Thank you Denise & thanks for watching.
I cannot tell you how many videos I have viewed, and how many posts or documents I have read regarding this topic. I had already created my website when I heard about the need of creating a child theme. Only one other video came close to your video here; but your video explained in better detail about which plugin to select for those of us who had already created our website. What you said simply gave me the reassurance that I was selecting the best/correct plugin; and that all of my hard work and time was not going to be lost when I activated the child theme. You are an excellent teacher of this topic. I am so very grateful to you!! I will definately be utilizing you as a resource as I move forward; and I will definately be recommending you to anyone I find who will benefit from your videos, etc. Thank you!
Thank you Brenda for such a nice written comment. I am grateful that you appreciate that I go into a little bit more depth when explaining something like this. Some people not so much! I'll always be here for you.
"The theme "Primer" generated unexpected PHP debug output."
I tried with Twenty Fourteen and I ended up with this same message when I select the Parent Theme (your tuto at 4:15) and click Analyse. Any idea please ?
Great video, making something that I couldn't fathom simple. But you left me on the edge of the cliff! Do I copy all of the parent templates to the child theme or not? Like you say in the vid, I don't know enough to know what I might want to change in the future. But I am concerned about copying everything over as I have no idea if this has a potential downside in the future. I do know that my current theme is slow and so I am trying to make a clean, fast site. And I do know that I loaded the previous site with lots of s---- stuff. So what's the advice??
Sorry about that Stephen! That would definitely not have been intentional. Sometimes it's hard to make these videos because you can't go and correct something that you left out, you have to re-create the entire video. So to answer your question, no you would only copy of file into your child theme that you needed or wanted to make an edit to. So at this point if there isn't anything that you need or want to edit, then there is no need to copy anything over. Anything that you do copy over your website will use the version in your child theme and will ignore the version in your parent theme. So this is why you don't want to copy everything in your child theme because any updates to your parent theme wouldn't be used anyway.
Thanks for that. These videos are very useful indeed.
great i gave up on word press about five years ago due to trying to code, speed up, build child themes. i am back! The world of wordpress has evolved and you are helping us evolve with it Thanks
You're welcome Russ! I will tell you that WordPress is an entirely different beast now and it is dramatically different and more powerful and also easier to work with.
I have created child themes on multiple sites, and this is by far the easiest way to do it. Awesome job!
Thank you.
You are the man WP Crafter. Very clear and very easy. Thank you.
I have two questions - There are multiple options within this plugin that allows us to copy over many files from the parent theme into the child theme. This is a great function of this plugin and for a none techy is far easier and quicker than going down the FTP or File Manager route. The fact that this plugin can also be removed once used is a bonus.
Question 1 - Which files from the parent theme do you suggest are the minimum that we should be copying over into the child theme? The Style.css and functions.php would be essential I would think but what other files are we likely to want to customise further down the line? Perhaps the Header and Footer files ?
Question 2 - Would it be best just to copy over all files from the parent theme into the child theme to be safe or are there any particular files that we definitely should NOT be copying over?
I am thinking of just copying over everything, regardless of ever needing to customise anything, but I am concerned that there may be some hidden instances or conflicts where this isn’t a good idea.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks again. Best tutorials on the web.
Well you actually don't copy anything over unless you know that you're going to customize that particular file. And you don't copy over the style.css or functions.php file because you will have a unique one in the child theme. The way those files work is anything you add to the child theme works as an extension of the patent theme, so it's not one or the other.
@@WPCrafter Hi Adam! I'm new in this community and found this thread. A similar question: Is copying of all the files (except style.css and functions.php) into the child theme the best option as, unfortunately, I'm not sure anymore where exactly I've made the changes in the parent theme? I want to continue using it further.
I should be safe to update the theme after I have saved all the files, is this right?
@@sophiab159 Most likely any changes were in the functions and style file.
Thanks for another great tutorial. So far a few of your tutorials has helped me out a lot. I understand when updates are made in the parent theme, any customizations that I've made in the child theme will not be affected. So does this mean my child theme will only be updated with those files that I have not customized? In other words does my child theme get updated with anything? Also, I’m currently using the free sydney theme and thinking of upgrading to sydney pro. What will happen when I upgrade to the pro version? Will I have to get a child theme for the pro version? If so, what will happen to my customizations that I’ve made in the sydney child theme free version? I’m hoping I’m making sense! Sorry but I'm a newbie to this whole wordpress thing so some things are still a bit confusing. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Again, many thanks!!
Hi Robin you are making perfect sense. You are correct anything that goes into the child theme doesn't get updated. But you typically only putting code customizations in their, or adding custom CSS or custom functions. Very few people are actually going to modify one of the template files from the parent theme. However I am one of those people that does that, but I am a little bit more advanced of a user. In regards to what happens when you get the paid version of your theme, my guess would be that the name of the theme changes therefore your child theme will not be able to find the Pro version of the parent theme. The way it links up is in the child theme there is a file called style.css and in the first couple lines it references the folder name of the parent theme. So if that folder name of the parent theme changes, the child theme will not be able to see it. So you'll have to find out what the folder name of the new parent theme will be and make the adjustment in that file on the child theme.
WPCrafter.com WordPress For Non-Techies Now I understand!! Thank you very much!
I have to say Adam, when I want to find out something here on youtube I always type "how to do... wp crafter" Thanks once more for your tutorials. Because of your videos, I was able to learn a lot and for that, me and my family are save doing the quarantine here in Brazil. Good bless you, man! You have no idea how much I owe you.
Wordpress is great, and this channel explain its stuff better
I am a divi elegant themes customer and I spent so much time with their customer support and none of those mickey mouse tech. guys told me to make copies of the modified files into child theme, and again all my changes got lost after I updated parent theme. Thank you very much. You are our life savior and you should have a paypal donation button on your web. You well deserved some money from us as thank you for your help.
Great videos. OK so here's my question let's say you have a child theme already that came with the parent. Now you've made a lot of changes on the child theme. Now an update comes along and it shows in your dashboard. If you click on the update does it automatically update the parent theme? Or will it update the child theme? Do you have to select the parent theme to make sure that's the one that gets updated when you hit the update button? Or do you just hit the update button and it automatically updates the parent theme. I would really appreciate the answer to that question because it's very puzzling to me. And again thanks for all the videos they have helped me tremendously . I await your answer.
It would only update the parent theme. Updates for child themes are not released, so you will never see an update to a child theme. Unless you're using Genesis, that is the only time when this is not the case
Hi Adam. Following on from this... Are you saying that all your "live" site are actually running using Child Themes?
@@WPCrafter hello.. I Create a child theme and then I update the parent theme and suddenly some code that I have puted for a slider in theme fuction has dissapear, with it, my slider too... why is that happened?
how do i update the parent theme in the future? So i followed the steps and make the child theme. I will make all my modifications to the child theme. When an update is released, how do i update the parent and that shouldn't affect any of my changes, correct?
THanks again
Exactly my question too, hope someone can help with this
I use the child theme for a client of mine and from the experience, I can say you update the parent theme like you always do, Wordpress shows you new updates and you just click them - and all the coding you do in your child theme doesn't get erased in the process. Hope this helped you.
and my question is what trouble will we get if we dont update our theme ? I have many changes on my hestia theme. but now the update was released and I still many question and confusion about the child theme.
Study Inggris Well I am not sure what happens when we don’t update because I always update everything. All I can tell that I have also many changes in a few websites I made and it all stays the same thanks to child theme I always use. The child theme makes sure you can customize all you want without the code being overwritten every time you update the theme and plugins.
Of course, issues can happen sometimes but thst is why every theme has a great support forums where you can ask for help.
thanks for replying. I have tried to make child theme and update my theme and my confusion slightly lessened. what you said is correct. it can make it our created code safe without losing when we update the theme. I can know from my mistake because I lost all of my created code in parent theme after updating, be grateful I saved it on my computer. apprently we have to move the code into child theme before updating, don't we? and for the next time, we have to always add our custom code just in child theme. CMIIW
Thanks for your easy-to-understand video. I am a non-tech guy that need to buy my website. I have watched many video about child theme, and yours is the only one that I can understand and copy your steps. Appreciate your work.
Thanks for the compliment Ryan! And that's my goal to be up to explain things in a term that anyone can understand
Perfect content for my needs. Can't wait to check out more of your instructional videos! I so appreciate all the time you and other contributors put into making this content available for non-programmers.
Thanks for stopping by Daryl. You are pretty much my target market, people that want to do these things on their own and not to go and get a PhD in coding.
You kinda look like Dr.Evil, a “child theme”
LOL! Thanks for watching Wesley Webster.
@@WPCrafter Oh my gosh this was 2016 ! i feel like i miss a lot of videos, i have a question, When we install a theme it shows the name of the theme and author so in child theme if we change it for example from prime theme to create child theme and name it my theme author M.Khan, does that affect the site or theme?
Thanks so much man! I had a child theme on my site forever but it just sat there blank. I never bothered to figure out how to get the header from the parent to the child, and always just ended up making changes to the parent theme. Thankfully I did it right, but stumbling on this video by accident ended up being perfect timing as I needed to not mess something up like doubly so. Haha. Now I got a child theme and was able to send the header.php over! Thanks again!
There are many well intentioned, but poorly executed videos out there on the internet.
Making a good video, on subject, clear, and "smoothly watchable" takes talent.
This gentleman has it all! Thank-you. HLG
Wow! Thank you so much! I try to do my best with each video, and they are getting better and better each time.
Thank you, I was trying to do that for days, and all these people online talk the computer jargon (and are also very rude and frustrated with us non techies). It's nice to be able to do the tasks without all the knowledge. So thanks again for cutting the deal and rudeness and get straight to the point🤓👌💻
Thank you. After spending an hour at least getting error messages, I found this tutorial, installed the plugin and voila!
That's great news, that using this video you are able to create a child theme.
Omg...you made it sound uncomplicated and it was to the point. This is my first video, so if I ever go through any issues on WP I'll stop by here first. Again, ty ty ty!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video! You are so awesome for this!
Found myself saying “Oh!!!” several times in this video - on both the why and how of child themes. Thanks!!
I'm glad this was helpful Larry Baxter and thanks for watching.
Thank you so much!!! I got my child theme installed and have started making updates.
You're welcome Brad Spomer! Thanks for watching.
Awesome Video. I followed your instructions step by step and worked perfectly. I couldn't get any help from my theme author to get this done but what you showed me worked. Thank you!!!!
Happy to hear it worked out for ya.
Perfectly and Quickly explained video. It calmed my anxieties of making a Child Theme.
Thank you Scott. It's crazy how easy it is but for some reason people explain in the most complicated. way.
Adam, been a sub for a while and never commented. Thank you for this video, for me a child theme is still a powerful tool when building sites for clients even in 2020.
Awesome video! Clear and well laid out walk through for another "non-techies"!! Thank you!!
Hey thank you.
I gave a thumbs up. This video saved me from doing all this manually, didnt know they had plugins for this :-) Thanks.
Thanks for this very helpful video! With people like you out there I'm finding my way to improve my websites. Cheers!
Man, your videos are so good and well explained! Thank you for creating this content!

I'm glad this was helpful Tonya in VA and thanks for watching.
Its worked in the first try! Thank you so much!
Awesome! I consider myself a non-techie with above average WP skills, however Child Themes seem to stump me. This video has made it super easy to not only create but to also understand...........the people who gave this a thumbs down must be professional haters as this is by far the best video I have seen for instruction - THANK YOU
You are always searching for the best & newest Stuff and present it to us. Thanks Adam.
Thank you. I rely on loyal subscribers to tell me what they want!!!
Well, I guess making a tutorial about how to add or remove sections/division in any theme (Whether by a Plugin, CSS or PHP), will be really great.
this is amazing!! I've been putting this off for so long because all of the text based instructions I found were WAY too complicated.. Thank again!!
I know right. People over complicate things. Thats where I come in to translate it for normal people.
this was SOOOO helpful. the footer.php part was gold. thank you!!! Also, I'm so happy about how it transfers my previous customizations. You really made my day. I'm only upset that I went to another video before yours and wasted so much time
This was SO SO helpful!!!!! Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!!!
Happy to hear that it helped you.

Amazing video, great job !!
Thanks a lot :)
Excellent video. I love how WordPress makes it so easy to change the look and feel of your website quickly, and also having the control to modify any of the code wherever you want. WordPress gives an awesome base website to start off with. And it's so simple. But, I do recommend people learn some basic HTML and CSS; and eventually JavaScript. It's always good to be able to fix small issues yourself instead of paying 100's or 1000's on a web developer. Especially after you put a few months or years of work into your site. I was worried about losing data when creating a child theme, and this really helped. Now, I'm off to add some scripts. Thank you so much. :)
Yes some basic things are helpful to learn.
Thank you so much. You make it so easy to create a child theme. I am learning so much from you. Thanks a lot.
Awesome Video! Take away all the frictions of working with wordpress themes.
a great and very intuitive way of creating child-theme. Thanks!

Thanks for making this very easy for someone who is taking baby steps into website building and cautious about breaking things :)
You're awesome! Make is sound so simple and make me realize it actually is simple!
Thanks
Yes it doesn't have to be so hard. People just explain it all wrong.
Thank you! I love your tutorials. You've helped me so much.
Thank you Karen! I'm happy to help in any way that I can always.
Awesome tutorial and explanation is super! Thanks.
Thanks for this video, it has been really helpful!
Hey buddy your video is truly awesome !!! I have been using Joomla and wanted to move the site to WP because of the lovely Themes and functionalities. They say WP is easier than Joomla but you know a great site is not a cakewalk. You made my day with easy instructions and that too in a non-tech way. I am going through all your videos now. Thanks :)
Thanks so much, and I think the reason I feel that WordPress is a better direction is because it's where all the action is for development. There is such a vast array of themes and plug-ins available that makes it so easy to do things.
I agree with you Adam. Thanks again!
Thanks for the vid, very easy to follow and made a pain in the ass a breeze ty again.
Thank you very much for this video! I am a 59-year-old woman. I have a small campsite in the Netherlands. And even I :-) can follow what you explain here !! Greetings Ans Vermeltfoort
