The best part is that it will save what I've already done. I was so afraid that I would have to start over from scratch since I was adding a child theme after the fact. Thank you! Thank you! Hi Adam. Great tutorial once again!
    Q: Let's say I already started my website and things are pretty customized to my likings. If I didn't do a child theme at first (didn't knew at the time about parent and child things 🤪) can I still make one now with this pluggin so that everything stays the same and I just select to work on the child (active) afterwards?
    Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

    Adam,
    Love the tutorial, simplicity!
    I do have a question...
    After the child theme is created, I want to make small changes
    to the style sheet or just any code in general. So using the plugin, I copy the
    file/folder over to the child theme and make code changes. In the event that I
    really screw things up beyond my repair capabilities, how do I delete my
    changes or the file/folder that was copied over to the child theme so that
    things go back to normal?
    Thanks!!

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  Před 7 lety

      Yes you are correct. As far as deleting, you can access the file system via FTP or your cPanel. I usually go the cpanel route since it is so much faster for me.

    I cannot tell you how many videos I have viewed, and how many posts or documents I have read regarding this topic. I had already created my website when I heard about the need of creating a child theme. Only one other video came close to your video here; but your video explained in better detail about which plugin to select for those of us who had already created our website. What you said simply gave me the reassurance that I was selecting the best/correct plugin; and that all of my hard work and time was not going to be lost when I activated the child theme. You are an excellent teacher of this topic. I am so very grateful to you!! I will definately be utilizing you as a resource as I move forward; and I will definately be recommending you to anyone I find who will benefit from your videos, etc. Thank you!

    Great video, making something that I couldn't fathom simple. But you left me on the edge of the cliff! Do I copy all of the parent templates to the child theme or not? Like you say in the vid, I don't know enough to know what I might want to change in the future. But I am concerned about copying everything over as I have no idea if this has a potential downside in the future. I do know that my current theme is slow and so I am trying to make a clean, fast site. And I do know that I loaded the previous site with lots of s---- stuff. So what's the advice??

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  Před 7 lety +5

      Sorry about that Stephen! That would definitely not have been intentional. Sometimes it's hard to make these videos because you can't go and correct something that you left out, you have to re-create the entire video. So to answer your question, no you would only copy of file into your child theme that you needed or wanted to make an edit to. So at this point if there isn't anything that you need or want to edit, then there is no need to copy anything over. Anything that you do copy over your website will use the version in your child theme and will ignore the version in your parent theme. So this is why you don't want to copy everything in your child theme because any updates to your parent theme wouldn't be used anyway.

  • @LuckyLittleKitten
    @LuckyLittleKitten Před 7 lety +3

    You are the man WP Crafter. Very clear and very easy. Thank you.
    I have two questions - There are multiple options within this plugin that allows us to copy over many files from the parent theme into the child theme. This is a great function of this plugin and for a none techy is far easier and quicker than going down the FTP or File Manager route. The fact that this plugin can also be removed once used is a bonus.
    Question 1 - Which files from the parent theme do you suggest are the minimum that we should be copying over into the child theme? The Style.css and functions.php would be essential I would think but what other files are we likely to want to customise further down the line? Perhaps the Header and Footer files ?
    Question 2 - Would it be best just to copy over all files from the parent theme into the child theme to be safe or are there any particular files that we definitely should NOT be copying over?
    I am thinking of just copying over everything, regardless of ever needing to customise anything, but I am concerned that there may be some hidden instances or conflicts where this isn’t a good idea.
    Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks again. Best tutorials on the web.

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  Před 7 lety

      Well you actually don't copy anything over unless you know that you're going to customize that particular file. And you don't copy over the style.css or functions.php file because you will have a unique one in the child theme. The way those files work is anything you add to the child theme works as an extension of the patent theme, so it's not one or the other.

      @@WPCrafter Hi Adam! I'm new in this community and found this thread. A similar question: Is copying of all the files (except style.css and functions.php) into the child theme the best option as, unfortunately, I'm not sure anymore where exactly I've made the changes in the parent theme? I want to continue using it further.
      I should be safe to update the theme after I have saved all the files, is this right?

    • @WPCrafter

    @robbinlb7583 Před 7 lety +5

    Thanks for another great tutorial. So far a few of your tutorials has helped me out a lot. I understand when updates are made in the parent theme, any customizations that I've made in the child theme will not be affected. So does this mean my child theme will only be updated with those files that I have not customized? In other words does my child theme get updated with anything? Also, I’m currently using the free sydney theme and thinking of upgrading to sydney pro. What will happen when I upgrade to the pro version? Will I have to get a child theme for the pro version? If so, what will happen to my customizations that I’ve made in the sydney child theme free version? I’m hoping I’m making sense! Sorry but I'm a newbie to this whole wordpress thing so some things are still a bit confusing. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Again, many thanks!!

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  Před 7 lety +7

      Hi Robin you are making perfect sense. You are correct anything that goes into the child theme doesn't get updated. But you typically only putting code customizations in their, or adding custom CSS or custom functions. Very few people are actually going to modify one of the template files from the parent theme. However I am one of those people that does that, but I am a little bit more advanced of a user. In regards to what happens when you get the paid version of your theme, my guess would be that the name of the theme changes therefore your child theme will not be able to find the Pro version of the parent theme. The way it links up is in the child theme there is a file called style.css and in the first couple lines it references the folder name of the parent theme. So if that folder name of the parent theme changes, the child theme will not be able to see it. So you'll have to find out what the folder name of the new parent theme will be and make the adjustment in that file on the child theme.

    Great videos. OK so here's my question let's say you have a child theme already that came with the parent. Now you've made a lot of changes on the child theme. Now an update comes along and it shows in your dashboard. If you click on the update does it automatically update the parent theme? Or will it update the child theme? Do you have to select the parent theme to make sure that's the one that gets updated when you hit the update button? Or do you just hit the update button and it automatically updates the parent theme. I would really appreciate the answer to that question because it's very puzzling to me. And again thanks for all the videos they have helped me tremendously . I await your answer.

I can know from my mistake because I lost all of my created code in parent theme after updating, be grateful I saved it on my computer. apprently we have to move the code into child theme before updating, don't we? and for the next time, we have to always add our custom code just in child theme. Excellent video. I love how WordPress makes it so easy to change the look and feel of your website quickly, and also having the control to modify any of the code wherever you want. WordPress gives an awesome base website to start off with. And it's so simple. But, I do recommend people learn some basic HTML and CSS; and eventually JavaScript. It's always good to be able to fix small issues yourself instead of paying 100's or 1000's on a web developer. Especially after you put a few months or years of work into your site. I was worried about losing data when creating a child theme, and this really helped. Now, I'm off to add some scripts. Thank you so much. :)

    Hey buddy your video is truly awesome !!! I have been using Joomla and wanted to move the site to WP because of the lovely Themes and functionalities.
