- The biggest Dutch holiday is, without a doubt, KING’S DAY! April 27th is the birthday of the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander.
The night before April 27th, parties begin throughout the country, but it is on April 27th that the streets and canals throughout the Netherlands become completely packed. Amsterdam alone, for example, receives more than a million people! Everyone wears the color orange, which is considered the color of the Royal family of the Netherlands.
On this day it is very common to see the famous "flea market" everywhere, which is when people sell everything (really everything) that they no longer use, and it is only on this day that this is allowed here without needing authorization. in advance and without having to pay taxes. It is also allowed to drink in public places on this day.
Every year the Royal Family of the Netherlands visits a city, and this year 2024 they went to Emmen. It's a great opportunity for anyone who wants to see the King up close!
People are extremely happy and want to dance, party and have fun. As you walk through the streets of the cities, you see many DJs playing, bands and boats playing loud music along the canals. April 27th is definitely my favorite day here in the Netherlands. I love this festive atmosphere and this delicious energy that this day has.
