As usual your camera work is the best! It's probably the other way around perhaps a stray Scrub Pythons hanging on to bush after a flood, landed on Papua New Guinea. After eons of evolution on an island a different diet, and selective pressure, eventually became a separate yet linked new species - the Amethystine Python.
Thank you! We meant the information more in a systematic way, before it was one species, but later scientists splitted Scrub python as a separates species 🙂 We did no see any phylogeographic study on history of Simalia genus, do you know about any?

Great videography, Scrubbys are very common in my area, as are Carpets, I didn't know that our Scrub Python was a subspecies of the Amethystine Python, I've always used both names for the same snake as I thought they were the same species !! Love your work and have subscribed !! 🪱😎

"Scrub python" and "amethystine python" are synonymous - different "common" names for the same species / subspecies, although, of course, each subspecies has a different Latin / scientific name - they can all be loosely called "scrub" or "amethystine" pythons. Hope that explanation wasn't confusing.
Great video guys, I also love Scrub pythons, I spent some time around Darwin, where I saw carpet and water pythons and but as you know there are no scrub pythons around Darwin.

Has long size for scrub Python been influenced by their environment they inhabit?
Thank you! Well, Scrub python is rather extremelly long for a highly arboreal snake. Its size is probably connected more with the fact that it belongs to pythons than with some special environmental pressure.

Amazing snakes and excellent footage. One of these tried to eat my dog a few years ago. Thank goodness my wife was home and managed to save it. Once they get to about 4.5 m, they actually fatten up quite a bit and are capable of eating a small child. One of these had a go at a 22 months old toddler about 5 years ago just North of Cairns. There're some unofficial records of individuals up to 8.5 m long, but 6-7 m is much more realistic. The largest one I've seen I'm my backyard in suburban Cairns was 4.2m long.
Thank you very much! We heard about cases when Scrub pythons tried to eat kids. Great that your wife managed to save your dog! As you say, this species rarely grows over 5 meters nowadays and those extreme records were not reliably measured.
Iv personally seen a python around 10 meters in the wild in cairns nth qld. It went from the bush on one side of the road, all the way across into the bush. Roads are generally about 9 meters wide so it was over 9 easily. I think it was the sanke steve erwin was looking for when he cae up to cairns for his final adventure. He never found it so he went to port douglas to film on the reef. Thats where he passed away.
It is a pity that such a sighting was not properly recorded and snake was not measured 🥲 We hope that sometimes huge snakes can still survive even nowadays!

Another amazing spot close to: Papua New Guinea! I saw the related relative of the scrub python and colleges stayed in a conservation area and were astonished by the abundance of snakes. If you are still in Oz, maybe you can give it a try (Wanang Conservation Area, Madang Province)

I'm down in Melbourne and have never really been interested in visiting Queensland because I don't like hot weather (it does get hotter here, but it's always warm up there). Now, I am really comfortable with my choice to stay down south 😬
Yes, it can be very hot in the northern part of Queensland!

Yes, Scrub pythons are one of the biggest snakes in the world. However, it is important not to trust records which are not reliably measured and published. If you know about a well documented case of a Scrub python killing a child, send it to us please. We know about several cases when the python tried but the kid was saved by someone else!
They can get as big as a retic, just not as thick
There are records without evidence saying that they can get really big, but we only trust those records which were supported by trustworthy measurements.

Well, Australasia is a hotspot of python diversity if you check how many species live there compared to the rest of the world :) Yes, we have material for a nice video about 3 more python species. I am now doctor Matej ;)

What about the mating season, reproduction, and the measurement of baby pythons?
This species has mating season from July to September and babies usually measure around 700 mm.

Are males or females larger? Because you first say "Males are usually longer and heavier than females" but follow that statement with "Usually python females grow bigger than males." I believe you are pointing out that male carpet pythons are larger than females, which is unusual among pythons. Is that what you are saying?
Males are larger. The second sentence is about pythons in general as a group :)
