  • Abraham Lake is an artificial body of water located at Kootenay Plains at the Canadian Rockies, Alberta. Situated at the North Saskatchewan River lining the David Thompson Highway between Saskatchewan River Crossing and Nordegg, Alberta. The lake is 33 kms long and 1340 meters above sea level.
The lake was created in 1972 during the construction of the Bighorn Dam. It is Alberta’s largest reservoir. The lake is famous for its FROZEN METHANE BUBBLES trapped near the lake’s surface.
The gas bubbles are produced when decaying plants on the lake bed release methane gas, which formed into bubbles. The bubbles are trapped within the frozen water in suspension when the lake freezes in the winter.

Nicely made! we are so lucky out here. The mountains, the lakes, the bubbles, cracks in the ice, ice slabs and wind make for a wonderful winter experience. #DTCountry
