  • We take a look at the Bison 1879 Oberharzer Utility or Bushcraft Axe. Bison are a long-standing German company, let's see what their axes are like.

That sheath might actually be sized for putting a collar guard on. I have an axe that had the opposite problem, the sheath fit fine in stock form, but when I added a leather collar guard it was too snug . They probably figure most guys are running one of those on their axes.

You might be right, it’s a shame though because it’s a well made sheath.

Nice review. I am from Yorkshire, UK but have lived in BC Canada for 19 years. I reviewed this axe over a year ago and liked it, it does split quite well and chops even better. I have large hands so the haft thickness is OK for me. I had the same issue with the mask, I do not think it is the right mask for this model. Even though the head was firmly mounted it was not lined up very well and the two tubular wedges needed driving in better. Over all, the head was very well made, as was the quality haft, it came nice and sharp and I think it was very good value for money. Best wishes, WS

Thanks, it definitely seems to be good value for money, shame about the leather mask.

Thanks for the review, have same axe and exactly same experience with handle and fitting of sheath. Bushcraft Sisyphus has nice video on the Oberharzer pattern.

That's interesting, seems an oversight with the sheath considering it is very nicely made. I will check out the Bushcraft Sisyphus link. Thanks!

It’s actually 2 videos, one on the pattern and one “arena” where it competes with other patterns. Just rewatched both, highly recommended

Glad to see this axe getting some looks! It has become one of my favorites for camping. It is a very forgiving splitter because the bit sweep protects the handle.
I would also assume it is open die forged. Too bad about the sheath it smelled wonderful. Very quality veg tanned leather. I thought they sent me a sheath for a different model but now think it’s a problem with the fit. They should consider switching the sheath to a mask that wraps around the bit instead of behind the poll.

It’s definitely a strange one with the sheath. It’s overall a much higher quality than similar priced axes but doesn’t function correctly.

This pattern has been on my radar for awhile now but is very difficult to find. If the Bison had a heavier head weight I'd probably order one too. Great review, thanks.

Hi Joey, it’s definitely different but handled pretty well. I guess the lighter weight is so that it is easier to carry in a pack.

The price of these are so reasonable over here for a European made axe. How are you getting on over there?
