- More than 50 years ago, two Brazilian songwriters spotted a 17-year-old girl strolling near the beach in Ipanema, a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, and were inspired to compose song “The Girl from Ipanema.” TODAY’s Hoda Kotb catches up with Helo Pinheiro, now 71, who reflects on being immortalized in a bossa nova classic.

Meet The Real-Life Girl From Ipanema | TODAY
Looks great for 71. I wouldn't have thought she was more than mid 50s.
Seriously!
So she's still the girl from Ipanema, that one, from the song of the 60s!
Erika Miller ikr like "You're what?? No way!!"
no fricking way, i thought she was like 40.
@@cardinalwilson8034 You must know some pretty rough looking 40 year olds! I'm not saying this woman isn't still beautiful - she is - but she looks every bit of 70 years old. That is the age I would have guessed, even having no idea who she is.
Unreal that she's 71. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be such an integral part of Brazilian culture. To know that you're the inspiration behind one of the world's most well known songs.
Now you understand why she inspired a song. She looks like that when she's 71, could you imagine her when she was 17?
True.
Jason Barnes q
Her name is Helo Pinheiro.
eric r
She still looks beautiful.
true
Luiza Mello true
i dont think so
She will always be beautiful. I remember her when I was 7.
Tall and strong. Looks young and lovely.
She still looks Beautiful. I have a few friends from Brazil and they are naturally beautiful from the heart. The sweetest people ever.
@Uncle Gold lies lies from the media
@Juliet Robin Thank you, you're very sweet too :)
@Uncle Gold in united states they elect trump
This women looks great at 71 years old!
woman - singular
She’s still beautiful. This song will live forever. Grammy wins well deserved
No plastic surgeon though.....
She's ageless and still blessed that she is "The Real Girl From Ipanema" with lots of real love as a blessing. 😍💓🌹😊
I'm a tenor saxophonist, and had a lesson with Stan Getz! He, of course, is the saxophonist on the record and the one who made it all happen in the USA. He outsold the Beatles with TGFI in 1964, the year old the Beatles. I was busking a couple of years ago, was playing TGFI, and a beautiful young woman came up to me and introduced herself as being from Ipanema! I have a nice photo of us....
Jeffrey Newton Goals af
i played alto for 5 years. and it getz tenor version was the only song i ever learned to play in its entirety by ear. the greatest sax song/version ever
I fell in love qith this song when I was just a little girl in the 60's. I remember laying in bed at night listening to it playing softly on my parents record player.
Elise Trouw has a great rendition as well. I was listening too.
Not only is she still absolutely stunning, she is brilliant and has personality to burn. Live to 100, Heloisa; we jazz fans need you to.
OMG she is 71 and looks younger than my parents around 38/39
Your parents must have had a rough life then! This lady is a beautiful 71-year-old, and doesn't look anything like a normal, healthy person in their 30s or 40s.
She is still very beautiful.
Now you know why the song was made about her.
She looks this good at 71.
She is still a very attractive woman for her age, I can imagine she was gorgeous 50 years ago when they write this son and she will forever be a part of the Brazilian music and culture as this song is the single most iconic song of Brazil, so she has been immortalized by it.
Stop for her age rudeness
No wonder!! She was a bombshell and now she's still beautiful
She aged fine like fine wine.
The best version has to be Astrud Gilberto’s sorry Frank this’s not for you.
AMEN TO THAT!!!!
Yessssss i totally agree!
I like the version with Carlos Jobim and Astrud.
Indeed💯🤙🙏❤
True. With Astrud 's silky and smooth voice, takes you to another dimension. Definitevely my favorite version!!!
She is still FABULOUS!! I love this song and the original version. I even posted on FB today!!
"Tall and tan, and young and lovely, the girl from ipanema goes walking and when she passes, and oh she passes, she goes.. ahhhh...."
She was beautiful and is still so lovely.
This is what a 70 year old woman looks like in Brazil, guys.
Jonathan Beatrice Not Brazil She is Portuguese 😀
Vladimir Trump teu cu
Franciele Monteiro I love you too baby 😂
Vladimir Trump shut up she was born in Rio
Vladimir Trump so all brazilians are portuguese, the same if i say that north americans are english hahaha
Quite a beautiful woman indeed
I like Diana Krall's version.
Beautiful woman through and through. At 71, still so full of life.
She is ADORABLE !!!
wow what a magical story, told by the girl from Today ;) I've always loved this song in any version and the origination makes it even better. Great interview, Hoda!
RIP to the original singer
Wow I love this music I always sing it in portuguese so beautiful
One of the greatest songs - Astrud's laconic delivery, Stan Getz on saxophone, inspired lyrics and story, fabulous in Portuguese, and she is a really lovely person - it's got it all . . .
I am in love again. Beautiful documentary.
Astrud Gilberto is the best
Yesss I agree 💯 percent, when she sings it is like very "CLASSY, EFFORTLESS and so much STYLE" one can deliver like "Astrid Gilberto" to me she sings like an "ANGEL" an on earth..
Wonderful memories of Brasil. This is one of my favorite songs as a child in the 1960's. I loved visiting Rio's beaches.
Wow that's her. I love it. I can really relate to this song. She's still as beautiful
@@renarga6886 rs,rs.
nice compliment to her and Astrud! thank you for posting.
sorry Helo, nothing against Frank, but the original version is far and away the best, especially with the great Stan Getz
Que linda ela é! Não acredito que ela tem 71 anos! Uau!
I met her, nice lady. She could have helped the interviewer on some pronunciation. Nice to see her again
Thanks!
Wow she was and is so beautiful
Looks incredible at 71 yrs old wow!
That's it... I'm going to Brazil and get me a girl from Impanema
Find a man
Very nice memoir Interview of the Girl from Ipanema and Hoodia.Very enlightening, uplifting and amazingly emotional interview.
Cool, love the song and Rio, simply beautiful.
She is still Beautiful.
Love this song!
Great video!!! Thank you so much
Great song from when I was just a little girl
Great, now i have to find the song LOL
Hope you found it! :) Make sure you have listened to Astrud Gilberto's version, also. I think it is the most authentic and beautiful one.
Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto was the beguiling young woman who strolled past the Veloso bar-café each day, galvanizing attention, turning heads, and leaving broken hearts in her wake. She was an unattainable goddess who deigned to walk the earth.
This excruciatingly bittersweet longing for the unattainable is a special flavor of melancholy that the Portuguese call “Saudade” - a recurring and a defining aspect of Portuguese and Brazilian culture.
In the voice of Astrud Gilberto, we can discern the poetic fragility that eloquently conveys - definitively - the meaning of heartbreaking Saudade. Thus, Astrud Gilberto became an ambassador of Bossa Nova and The Girl from Ipanema became one of the most recorded songs in music history.
Descanse em paz Astrud
She is still pretty!
The way she BUTCHERS Vinicius de Moraes's name, OMG
She probably doesn't even know who he is.
She have known them ! Vinícios de Moraes and Tom Jobim.
Couldn't she ask the girl from Ipanema?
i heard this song for first time in 2004 and played it at least fifteen time. i found it in an abandoned cd
I luv how natural She speaks english
Still a beautiful woman.
I’ve been to Ipanema Beach and I’ve seen this bar/ cafe.
Surprised interview was so short
Coisa Mais Linda!
Wounderfull
The interviewer should have learned better how to pronounce the names of Helô Pinheiro (the girl of Ipanema) and Vinicius de Moraes (one of the composers). She did it all wrong!
I totally agree. It was an insult to both Heloisa Pinheiro and Vinicius de Moraes. Inexcusable!
kkkkk.
NBC rush job, Typical of NBC broadcasting from USA to get it wrong just to rush to have interview.
@@beamdoctor5637 Hello. Are you from USA ? I'm asking because I'm trying to understand 3 sentences of a song in English language in a video, but it is so difficult to me. Could you try to help me ?
@@paulopubarosario2313 Eu posso te ajudar, só falar o minuto que vc ficou em dúvida
beautiful
RIP
Wow... amazing.
Haha excellent. Love hearing about the history behind famous tunes.
Amy Winehouse is the best version, IMO, but there are so many great ones. I suppose I just love Amy's unique and beautiful voice.
Amy Winehouse’s version of the song is the reason I wanted to find out who this person the song was written about and I found this video. I love Astrud’s version as well.
Brazilian women are something else.
I ate my very first meal in Brasil at this restaurant when I arrived for the first time in 2020 and that same day I visited the grave of Tom Jobim at the Cemitério de São João Batista. What a day that was!
Helo Pinheiro still looks great after all these years.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I prefer Astrud Gilberto's recording of the song over all the others.
Yes! I dont know why she said Frank Sinatras version. Astrud Gilbertos is the best!
She may be a grandma now, but that moment was frozen in time!
Yes, she is!
Greatins from Brazil!
Wow so awesome.
This is like meeting the Mona Lisa of music.
THAT'S 71?! DUDE SHE LOOKS ONLY SLIGHTLY OLDER THAN MY OLD TEACHER WHO WAS ONLY 50
For years I thought the people in Brazil spoke Spanish. It wasn't till recently I learned that Portuguese is the major language of the country.
Love 💕 this segment 🥰 Viva dos Brazil 🇧🇷
"Here comes inspiration, walkin' through the door..." lyric by Paul Williams/songwriter
Rest in peace beautiful.
She is alive, who passed away was Astrud Gilberto.
@@gomes2151 that's who I was paying my respects to astrud
Nice video, but I have to disagree with her on what the best version is. The Sinatra one sucks.
Astrud's is the best one. :)
And of course, is the definitive one, and the one that won the Grammy for Record of the Year. :)
BigSleepyOx Amen, Amen, I say again Amen. Astrud Gilberto sang the definitive and, in my mind, the only version of this song worthy of stratospheric praise. If you want to know what an angel sounds like, listen to her sing this song; she'll put you into neutral faster than anyone alive.
Astrud!!!!!!!!!!!
Listen to Lou Rawls!
@@larrymoremckenzie3029 - The Lou Rawls version is my second favorite one. :)
Muito bom!!!!
I want to meet her one day.
Wow. Kinda want to check out ipanema now.
My favorite song.
Garota de Ipanema is a Legend.🎉❤
If Vinicius de Morais and Tom Jobim did for her a beautifull song, I think that she deserves.
Dang she was 71? I thought she was in her 50s but I was trying to do the math and something didn't add up. Dang she was a baddie I understand why he wrote it. ALSO, I feel like a man writing about a 17 year old girl wouldn't fly today. I feel like they're only giving this a pass because of its fame.
the way she pronounced Vinicius de Moraes hurt my ears so bad 😂
my favourite music
Wow Hoda, this was a great find. Tell her I said Hi. :)
This my garota, 4 real folks!!!!
Unreal 🙏
A much better time in our world...
If any of you guys know. There Is a mariachi version of this song by mariachi Vargas, but it's instrumental
Very charming
SHES 71????
The Girl from Ipanema is every brazilian woman
Me being brazilian, but paulista 😢👁💧👄💧👁
