- Born in New York in 1940, Larry Hankin took an industrial design degree from the University of Syracuse; multifaceted artist, in addition to being an actor, Hankin is also a screenwriter, producer, director and singer; he began his career as an illustrator in the entertainment world, and studied acting at Syracuse University, Syracuse New York. In same class with Frank Langella and Carl Gottlieb. Was a member of the comedy improvisation groups Second City (Chicago) and The Committee (San Francisco). This almost can't be overstated, how poignant and existentially useful a lesson it is. Learning how to establish your own boundaries, and cultivate your own self-love, and getting to a place where you can see your parents as human beings just like any other human beings. My relationship with my father was Not Very Good as a youngster, but it got better as I grew up and developed the ability to separate 'him' as a 'Father' icon whose job it was to raise me, and 'him' as the person who just happened to marry my mom.
A lot of us, just by 'the hand that we were dealt', have to grow up in environments that feel something between a low-security prison and an actual Stockholm Syndrome. And nobody really helps us understand that this is the meta; that this is just a stage in our lives, and our parents try their best to play certain roles on that stage, but it's usually not your fault, as a kid, when they can't play their role worth beans. They're just human; they're not your responsibility; they're still just coming to grips with the fact that YOU are THEIR responsibility.
Anyway, I'll hush now...

"Don't do what stupid people say". This is so true. I wish I had had a mentor like Larry early in my life.
When I told my family that after school I wanted to study art or design, they said things like "so then you can design curtains and tablecloths for a living!", and "how do you expect to make money with that?", "at art school there are very talented people, you would't be able to keep up with them".
So I got a diploma in biology, and I was very unhappy most of the time. It took me until now - at age 40 - to take my love for art seriously. Everyday, I have to fight thoughts like "this makes no sense, you're too old now to have a career in art, you're to slow, you'll never learn enough, why can't you go to office for work like normal people....blah bla blah". But that's only my family talking in my head. I might never be a successful artist, but I feel alive now, and grateful, and just happy whenever I'm painting.
Naysayers are like they are because they're insecure and doubt themselves. When giving their precious "advice", it's not because they're concerned with your well-being, but because they try to protect their ego, which is intimidated by people who have dreams and know exactly what they want, unlike them.

Ure not alone on this. Always loved acting and thats what i wanted to do. Ofcourse family doesnt agree. Been in and out of Jobs many times because of that conflict.

Random thing: What I do, when writing (although, you can apply this to the medium you work in) is I take myself out of the work. For me, it comes instinctively. These aren't my stories, these are the character's stories. If it doesn't come naturally to you, try giving it a go. Pretend someone else wrote your work or made your film then look at it, read it, watch it. And if you're enjoying it. If whatever you've made makes you feel something, then you've done it. Anything in it you find you don't like, workshop it or chop it. Remember that you're not the only person into what you enjoy. If you dig what you've done, then I say you've succeeded!!! Now go make that thing!!!!

I went to a family therapist many years back, and I recall an illustration framed up on the wall of his office that showed an auditorium with three people sitting scattered amongst all the seats. It was titled:
Welcome to the Children Who Were Raised by ‘Normal’ Parents Convention
"You can prepare without being nervous; nervous has nothing to do with it."
This is actually extremely helpful for me, I've become dependent on something I never needed.
Not just parents f*ck up their kids. Siblings too.

Adding to this incredible monologue I'd say "Do what you do because that's what you do and to hell with doing it for a reason." Reason being for example, to succeed, to sell, to get a job, etc. If you do as I recommend, it will "feed" you in your old age and make your entire life worthwhile. Worthwhile being fewer regrets.
Ya know, that's actually hilarious. I once decided I was going to go for a part in a stage show, the tryouts for which were 4 hours away. When the owner of the company addressed the attendees, the first thing he asked was, "who's nervous?" Out of the 70 or so people there including the owner himself, I was the only one who didn't raise my hand. I had just driven 4 hours to try this, I simply refused to be nervous. I guarantee I was the only person who walked away that day knowing I landed the part without waiting for the email. I simply refused to be nervous, bringing an unrivaled feeling of self confidence. I had it in my mind that I would absolutely not leave that day without that part. I succeeded.
Basically you just keep going. People will love what you do, or hate what you do, but that doesn't depend on you.
You never stop creating. As soon as you finish a piece, or a script, or a shot, or a scene, or a book... You make another, and then another, and then another... Because you are a creator... People will love it, hate it, reality will get in the way... But you just keep going, because you LOVE creating more than you HATE what comes with it...
You may not feel like you're "good enough"... but doesn't matter. The sole act of creating continuously will make you eventually good. Learning and practicing are things you do for the rest of your life... You keep going!!

About 12 years ago, when I was first stating to experiment with film-making, Larry gave me some encouragement that has stuck with me and I'm always grateful to him for it.
And what was that ? :)

I was chuckling to myself. I don't want to be THAT parent. I want my kids to stay cool. The problem is parents are always learning, they don't know everything and they make mistakes too. I told my boys that recently. They were surprised. They are 6 and 8. I think it's good for them to know that adults can mess things up too.

This was such encouraging advice. I also grew up trying to follow everyone else's way but my own so now Im trying to unlearn the shit that the stupid taught me, and learn to do things my way despite all the consequences that it might bring cause the learning will be worth it along the way

I work a day job but do what I think is fun at night. I worked in film for years but didn’t enjoy the process. You had 12 hour days if you were lucky all while working on movies for other people whose vision 90% of the time I felt was lackluster. Meanwhile, I feel like I have voices from both ends nagging. The family telling me to stick with my day job, and the artists telling me to leave it. In actuality I want a normal life where I can make films without being sucked into the volatile, ego driven atmosphere of the film industry, commercial and non commercial.
In the end I do my day job while also writing reviews, doing film discussions, attending festivals, and making little movies. I feel a bit more comfortable here where I can manage both brining balance to my life.
Most people would tell me to completely drop one for the other. But every person is different. I listened to everyone, I did everything, and I ended up making a split decision that I can ultimately die feeling satisfied with.
My coworkers at the day job will frequently talk about how horrible their job is because of the power hungry administrators. They seem miserable and it’s probably because they don’t do cool things they enjoy that’s tapping into their passion. There’s nothing for them to look forward to. So there’s no escape for them.
In the meantime when I get off work I have an interview with an actor or director I admire or get to head to an early screening of the newest Star Wars film. It took me years to get to where I got to obtain that access. My numbers suck. My clicks are limited but I never gave up and it paid off. Do I get paid for all my critic stuff? No. But I do it because it’s fun.
If I listened to either side completely my life would have been a downward spiral of continual substance abuse to shut my thoughts the fuck up. At the end of the day, I’m happy with my decision. I hope this posting made sense.

Im not even striving to be a film director or a screenwriter (Im an aspiring musician tho) but dang, didnt know I needed to hear this. Especially the part with the parents, I didnt have a good relationship with them growing up and I definitely let everything they told me affect me very negatively. I think part of successfully defeating self-doubt is also cutting toxic people out of your life when you can. You gotta surround yourself with people who understands you, not blindly accept everything you do, but understand you and accept your difference. Ive read somewhere, "The worse thing than being alone is being surrounded with people who make you feel you're alone". I dont think self-doubt stems from yourself alone, it stems from a bunch of external factors. And you gotta make your circle healthy, that's where you get some confidence.
As far as we know we only have one life and it goes fast. So do what is in your head and heart, if you don’t follow your dreams and instincts you could end up sorry later in life. Nobody is going to give you anything, you have to go after it.

It's sad when you look back and see that other people make your dreams come true... in their life - while you gave up when someone laughed at your "stupid" idea.
I remember this one councillor I saw as a child who would ask about my week, she straight told me she could only listen to and try and help me yet couldn't do anything about the families behaviour, this was so helpful.

Okay CZcams, get out of my head. Yesterday, I was thinking of this guy in "Escape from Alcatraz" (specifically, the scene where he tells Eastwood it's his birthday). Just thinking it, not searching for it, not even talking about it. But I do like him. He's one of those great character actors that I always used to get confused with other actors, like Fred Yerkes and Paul Greco.

this comment flicked a switch in me. i've written 2 books, and rewritten the first one almost twice. it's almost to a point where i'd say the first one is finished and ready to approach agents - but i'd always been reluctant because i felt like it had to be perfect or it would fail
but now its like "maybe if i put it out into the world, it will actually be good enough without making it totally perfect".
the more i thought about it, the more i realised that my favourite music/movies/books etc all have various flaws and imperfections. sometimes that is what makes them

Yes, unfortunately so do the lies and deceit apparently, or maybe confusion rather. The important thing is definitely to remember, that if someone is trying to tell you how to do something, especially something as personal as your own vocation, when they're not even in the same occupation as you, it should really be a new norm to tell these people to stuff it and stick to their own career. You know shit's gotten stupid as hell when people are advising you on how to do your own job when they don't even know what the job description fully entails
