  • What is contentment? Contentment is being fully satisfied in our soul, it is an idea of complete sufficiency. It is used in reference to God, in His self sufficiency and needing nothing. You could say it is coming to a state of being that is independent of external circumstances. In other words, it is being unmoved by external circumstances and situations because of the soul satisfaction within us; a state of soul satisfaction and sufficiency that circumstances, neither positive nor negative, can impact. This type of contentment is found in Christ alone and maintained by His power at work in us.

I am overjoyed when I find a pastor like Jesse Barrington, who speaks with humility and a soft voice and repeats scripture frequently in his sermons. Thank you pastor Jesse. I am blessed.

Yes, it is Christ alone, and by Christ’s work alone are we saved. It must be Christ alone for if there is one thing we can do to save ourselves; we do not need Christ. However, does Christ alone mean we do not have to do anything, and all we need to do is to enjoy being saved? No! Absolutely not, because Christ has a body, the church, and Christ does all things as one whole person, head and body. Therefore, being members of Christ’s body, any work we do for the building up of Christ’s body, the church, if we do it through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ; it is Christ, the head, who does it, not us. This is why Jesus said, Jn 15: 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remain in me and I in him will bear much fruit, for without me you can do nothing.” This is what it means, Gal 2:20 “I live, no longer I, but Christ who lives in me”. 1-Cor 1:30 “ He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption;” and this is why, 1-Cor 1:31 "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord."
Why then, on the cross, did Jesus say “It is finished.”? There are three distinct but connected chapters in the totality of God’s plan for our salvation: Creation, Redemption, and Sanctification.
The work of creation began, Gen 1:1, “In the beginning, when God create the Heavens and the earth,” and finished by the end of the sixth day.
The work of redemption began at the instant when Mary pronounced her ‘Fiat’ and conceived in her womb our Savior, and ended when Jesus said “It is finished.”.
The work of sanctification began on the Pentecost, is now in progress, and will not finish until Christ will return to receive his body, his bride, his wife, his sanctified church. See Revelation 21.
Therefore when Jesus said “It is finished.” he finished what he was sent to do; God’s plan for our salvation was not finished at this point. So Christ Alone does not mean, and can not be understood as there is nothing left for us, his body, to do. If there is nothing left for us to do, Christ wouldn’t command us to go and make disciples of all nations, and he wouldn’t give this command after he had said “It is finished.”, Mat 28:19, 20, “(19) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, until the close of the age." Also if there is nothing left for us to do, God can not work in us, Phil 2:13, “For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work." But it is understandable, however, when someone who rejects being a member of Christ’s body said, Christ did it all and there is nothing left for me to do; all I need to do is to enjoy being saved.

34:10... Well-said. It's not that we don't want to do good works and have certain blessings in our life or standards for keeping ungodly people out (Revelations 2:2-4) but we have to have contentment in the Lord first, and seek contentment in him, and THEN go to the other things afterward. Need to apply this to my life

U are illustrating the theology of redemptive suffering brother. The Catholic Church has centuries old deeply developed theology, on this.
Uniting our sufferings to the sufferings of Christ, makes sin redemptive for the salvation of souls. Sufferings have meaning, it is holy work, if offered up to God. Glory to God!
    God bless you.

I thought i was a believer and said all these things, BUT when I lost my job and my rental properties and my financial freedom and my dreams of more travelling and my fun lifestyle- but NOW I am NOT content. I am angry. I am only living in extreme depression and constantly regretting my choices. I feel LOST. I just want my life back. Definitely NOT content in the biblical sense. That is up to God to grant i guess.
